In Honor of Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, Vector Solutions Offers Free Training

Vector Solutions will donate $1 to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network for every NFPA 1851 course completion

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 10, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Today, Vector Solutions, the leading provider of training and compliance-based software solutions for public safety agencies, announced two of its most important National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) training courses will be complimentary during the month of January. In honor of Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, Vector Solutions is offering these courses free of charge for fire service members in an effort to help raise awareness about the critical health issues affecting our nation’s firefighters. This is the fourth year in a row the company has offered this initiative.

“I am proud to be part of the team at Vector Solutions helping support my brothers and sisters in the fire service,” said Robbi King, a 27-year veteran firefighter, former Chief Officer, and now Solutions Engineer at Vector Solutions. “By providing critical resources like these free training courses, we are helping make firefighting a safer job for all. The health and safety of our first responders remains top of mind.”

Firefighters are 14% more likely to die from cancer than the general population. The occupational hazard of cancer-causing substances poses a clear threat to the health of our nation’s heroes. In fact, cancer has caused upwards of 70% of line-of-duty deaths in recent years. Vector Solutions understands these risks and is addressing them through its training management programs and initiatives.

“Firefighting is an inherently dangerous profession that can affect the physical and mental health of those that serve,” added Chief Todd LeDuc, (Ret), Deputy CEO of Life Scan Wellness Centers, IAFC Safety, and a Health & Survival Board Member. “The risks extend beyond the fireground, which makes it essential to provide training management programs to stay up to date on safety precautions, like the threat of cancer-causing substances. They show up for us every day, and now we need to show up for them.” Chief LeDuc retired as executive assistant fire chief of Broward County, FL after 30 years of service. He is also a technical committee member of NFPA 1582 and Chair of the advisory board for the First Responder Center of Excellence.

Vector Solutions’ complementary courses offered through the January initiative are both video-based online NFPA training to help agencies meet NFPA standards. The courses include engaging interactions, real-life case studies, critical lessons, as well as prevention strategies for first responders. The NFPA 1851: Cancer-Related Risks of Firefighting course provides a thorough understanding of fire-service-related cancer risks for today’s firefighters and fire personnel. The NFPA 1500: PTSD in the Fire Industry course provides a better understanding of PTSD, how to cope with symptoms and suicidal thoughts, and how to identify them in peers who may be struggling.

“The Firefighter Cancer Support Network is excited to continue working with Vector Solutions,” said Lisa Raggio, Executive Director. “By offering these two important NFPA courses free of charge, more fire service professionals will have access to additional support, education, and the tools necessary to guide their life-saving protocols. Departments can better tackle cancer prevention head-on while also supporting those who have received a cancer diagnosis.”

Vector Solutions remains committed to raising awareness and keeping firefighters safe. As a part of this campaign, Vector Solutions is pleased to donate $1 to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network for every completion of the NFPA 1851: Cancer-Related Risks of Firefighting course. Vector Solutions will donate $1 up to $3,000 for every course completed before March 30, 2024.

In addition to the donations, the company will also hold a webinar, Surviving Occupational Cancer and Other Health-Related Risks in the Fire Service, hosted by Chief LeDuc on January 25. The webinar will cover the prevalence of specific cancers among firefighters, risk reduction tips, and best practices for decontamination.

Chicagoland Nonprofit Encourages Seniors to Move in Healthy Directions with Free Special Fitness Program; Elderwerks helps participants keep track of their progress

“Our popular program makes it easy for seniors to incorporate exercise into their daily lives,” she explained. “It’s up to them to choose what they would like to do—anything from walking, lifting weights, participating in a yoga or tai chi class or any other physical activity. We give them the encouragement and support to personally modify their workouts to their own pace, which I think, makes exercising more fun.”

A recent article by the National Council on Aging advises that “older adults should engage in moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes five days a week and in muscle-strengthening activities for two or more days a week that work for all major muscle groups. Statistics show that less than one-third of Americans aged 65+ meet this recommendation.”

To help participants find different activities, Elderwerks also offers virtual exercise classes. Through a partnership with The Urban Health Initiative at the University of Chicago Medicine community health department, there are weekly low-impact strength and cardio classes presented by the Chicago-based BodyParts Fitness Initiative.

Leah Seidel, owner of Golden Oaks Personal Training in Deerfield and an instructor who presents some of the nonprofit’s virtual chair yoga and cardio strength classes, recommends the following general tips to help seniors go far in their exercise program:

  • Staying hydrated helps boost one’s energy levels and mood. She said that people are recommended to drink half of one’s weight in ounces of water each day.
  • Creating a bedtime routine helps prepare one’s body for sleep. Some ways to do this include meditating, listening to quiet music, or taking a hot shower.
  • Eating a rainbow of foods which means including fruits and vegetables
  • Stretching helps alleviate aches and pains in the muscles and joints. In the morning, help your body wake up and reduce soreness by stretching 3-5 minutes before you get out of bed.

New Partnership Provides Increased Access to Radon Testing During National Radon Action Month

When inhaled, radioactive particles released by radon gas in your lungs can damage lung tissue and cause breakages and irreversible damage to lung cell DNA or cell mutations that can lead to cancer. Since there is no cure for lung cancer, proactive prevention is key. The only way to know your risk of radon exposure is to test.

On January 18, Protect Environmental will be releasing its second annual National Radon Risk Index™ (check out last year’s here) which ranks communities by the known indoor radon measurements recorded using a database that represents more than 2.5 million data points compiled from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and internal radon testing data points provided by Protect Environmental.

“We discovered that my childhood home had high levels of radon when my father was diagnosed with lung cancer, even though he was a non-smoker,” said Kyle Hoylman, CEO of Protect Environmental. “Our team is doing its part to reduce exposure to cancer-causing radon gas, but more awareness and action is needed to prevent this deadly disease across the U.S. That’s why we have partnered with the American Lung Association to break down barriers to radon testing and to empower individuals to reduce their risk of radon exposure through no-cost professional radon testing and low-cost test kits.”

To inspire action and end radon-induced lung cancer, the American Lung Association and Protect Environmental partner to provide professional no-cost radon testing in eight (8) key markets: (1) Chicago, IL; (2) Columbus, OH; (3) Denver, CO; (4) Detroit, MI; (5) Lexington, KY; (6) Louisville, KY; (7) New Jersey, and New York City, NY, and (8) Salt Lake City. Homeowners can request no-cost professional radon testing here. Through this initiative, a qualified professional will conduct a radon test using a certified active radon measurement device and will provide a detailed report to the homeowner upon test completion at no cost. If elevated levels are identified, the problem can be fixed through the installation of a mitigation system.

During National Radon Action Month, do-it-yourself radon test kits are also available nationwide at a reduced price to encourage everyone to know their radon risk. The kits include lab analysis from national and state-certified analytical laboratory RAdata, a Protect Environmental company. During January kits can be purchased at a reduced rate.

“Radon in homes is more common than you think. Unfortunately, most places in the country remain undertested, so this isn’t something that should be taken lightly,” said Deb Brown, Chief Mission Officer for the American Lung Association. “This is why the American Lung Association is proud to partner with Protect Environmental to offer free or low-cost radon testing for families. We urge everyone to test their homes for this cancer-causing gas.”

During National Radon Action Month, everyone is urged everyone to:

1. Test Your Home for Radon: The EPA recommends that every home be tested for radon every two years. The colder months are the best time to test. If elevated levels are found, take action to reduce radon exposure by installing a radon mitigation system. Request a no-cost professional radon test or order your low-cost radon test kit low-cost radon test kit online today.

2. Talk to a Friend or Neighbor About the Risk of Radon. More awareness is needed to create safer indoor spaces. Protect Environmental developed the National Radon Risk Search™ Tool to help people learn about radon results in their zip code and better understand the potential health risks radon poses near them.

3. Encourage Schools and Workplaces to Test for Radon. Limit radon exposure in all the indoor spaces you spend time in. Any building can have elevated levels of radon and the long-term threat of lung cancer can impact anyone. For more information on protecting commercial buildings from radon, visit ProtectEnvironmental.com/Commercial.

4. Talk to your Doctor and Learn More About Your Risk. In many cases, radon-induced lung cancer is asymptomatic. When symptoms start to show the damage is irreversible. People who have never smoked make up one out of seven radon-related lung cancer deaths each year. If you believe you may have been exposed to elevated levels of radon, talk with your doctor about your options for lung cancer screening and early detection. Learn more at Lung.org/radon.
