Ascension Mentality; Memoir details author’s personal life journey, psychology, and healing

Chicagoland licensed marriage and family therapist Amy Wilhelmi launches her new book: “Ascension Mentality” this month.

“The reality is, someone is always going to judge you, dislike you, be envious of you, and even hate you. The healthier and stronger you get, the more you break out of the societal and family mold that were your circumstances before, the more this is true.”

When Amy Wilhelmi, a Chicagoland licensed marriage and family therapist, wrote her new book “Ascension Mentality: Apathy, Awakening, Ascension, Abundance” she knew she wanted to write a raw, relatable and honest portrayal of how her life wasn’t a perfect picture both personally and professionally.

Personal struggles with alcoholism, emotional abuse, and poor lifestyle choices placed her in periods of darkness where there seemed to be no way out. The only answer that could help her turn away from the negativity was to make a commitment to change.

In her book, published by Fig Factor Media, Wilhelmi wrote about how a podcast host described her as a “driven, high performer.”

“My answer was: ‘No, actually I’ve struggled a lot and made a very conscious and difficult decision to change,’” she wrote. “And this book illuminates the change, determination and grit that it took me to get from a dark place to where I am now.”

The book captures Wilhelmi’s life in four chapters: Apathy with the goal of breaking free of deeply rooted beliefs; Awakening with the goal of understanding what living authentically means and letting go of obstacles; Ascension with the goal of operating from fear to fearlessness and Abundance with the goal of being authentic, overcoming difficulties, and sharing with others.

After each chapter, Wilhelmi poses questions of readers for further reflection. Questions include discerning those “stuck” moments; taking personal responsibility for one’s actions and choosing paths that felt right but were ignored.

While examining her life and sharing her experiences, Wilhelmi explained in her book how the most important part of her journey was ”fully becoming myself and letting go of what people think about me.”

“The reality is, someone is always going to judge you, dislike you, be envious of you, and even hate you,” she wrote. “The healthier and stronger you get, the more you break out of the societal and family mold that were your circumstances before, the more this is true.”

Wilhelmi wants readers to understand that their past mistakes shouldn’t stop them from accepting the change that can help them lead a more fruitful and positive life.

“I want people to know that you can do bad things, go through a dark time, and change quite significantly,” she explained. “People aren’t perfect. It’s OK to make mistakes. People go through things that they aren’t proud of having done. That’s okay, too. It’s a process to unwind from childhood trauma, make mistakes, and then finally ascend into who you were supposed to be. You have the ability to process and let go of your past. You can let go of shame and guilt and become a totally different person and the best version of yourself. “
