American College of Lifestyle Medicine announces certification of TrueNorth Health Center, a medically supervised, water-only fasting facility to address chronic disease

For nearly 40 years, TrueNorth Health Center has helped more than 20,000 people regain their health. The Center, located in Santa Rosa, California, was founded in 1984 by Drs. Alan Goldhamer and Jennifer Marano to teach patients healthful living practices. This involved encouraging an exclusively whole plant food diet without the addition of SOS (salt, oil and sugar), as well as respecting the need for sleep and exercise. The approach they established offers participants the opportunity to obtain evaluation and treatment for a wide variety of problems.

The staff at TrueNorth Health Center includes physicians, chiropractors, naturopaths, psychologists, research scientists and other health professionals. They have extensive experience in the evaluation and conservative management of high blood pressure, diabetes, autoimmune disorders and a wide range of other health conditions. The Center is now the largest residential facility in the world that specializes in medically supervised, water-only fasting.

Participants come to the Center to fast and heal, lose weight, and make diet and lifestyle changes while enjoying a health-promoting diet derived from whole natural foods. It is a unique place to rest, to rejuvenate, and to learn to achieve optimum health.

The long-term health benefits of water-only fasting are often dependent on dietary and lifestyle modifications. In order to facilitate these changes, TrueNorth offers extensive educational programs dealing with diet, food preparation, exercise, proper body use, stress management, sleep, and psychology. These programs are presented in the form of audio and videotapes, live lectures, demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions, and individual consultations. Meals are prepared from fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the Center’s own organic gardens whenever possible.

The ACLM program certification designation is based on evidence including data on program outcomes.

“ACLM is proud to recognize TrueNorth Health Center as a certified lifestyle medicine program,” said ACLM President Beth Frates, MD, DipABLM, FACLM. “Its residential, intensive lifestyle medicine program has been shown to help thousands truly change their lifestyle and the course of their disease.”

True North is the sixth program to earn certification designation from ACLM. The others are: Pivio (formerly the Complete Health Improvement Program), Chanwuyi Lifestyle Medicine Program, The Lift Project, Rochester Lifestyle Medicine Institute’s 15-Day WFPB Jumpstart and Full Plate Living.
