The American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM) is proud to announce that it has successfully completed the initial accreditation process by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM), a globally recognized organization. With the accreditation obtained last month by Independent Agency for Accreditation and Rating (IAAR), ACSOM will now begin its inaugural class with two accreditations that are recognized by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME). With the dual WFME recognition, ACSOM graduates are eligible to receive an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate, a requirement to pursue residency training in North America.
Dr. Ramin Ahmadi, MD, MPH, former Associate Clinical Faculty at Yale School of Medicine and founding Dean of ACSOM, expressed his satisfaction with the accreditation process, “Meeting ACCM’s quality standards and receiving WFME recognition is an immense achievement for ACSOM.”
During the accreditation process, ACCM reported that ACSOM has the infrastructure to successfully operate a medical school. ACSOM sits on a 30-acre campus that includes state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, and simulated patient care environments, equipped with the latest technology and resources to support student learning and development.
With the latest accreditation, ACSOM students can progress through their medical education journey all the way through to residency unhindered. Key to ACSOM’s curriculum is the integration of clinical medicine at the start of the students’ academic journey and continues through their clerkships at partner teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada. With the latest accreditation, ACSOM graduates will meet the conditions for ECFMG certification, a requirement by the US Department of Education to pursue residency training in the United States as well as the gold standard to practice in the rest of North America.
“This accreditation has not only assured our graduates of their eligibility for residency training in the United States and Canada but has also allowed us to refine and enhance our educational program. Collaborating with a professional and high-quality accrediting organization like ACCM has enabled us to improve our processes, protocols, and overall program design,” said Dr. Ahmadi.
The positive development has already sparked a tremendous surge in student applications. Ms. Greene, the Director of Admissions at ACSOM, reported a daily ten-fold increase in the number of applications over the past five days. “We anticipate a further surge in the number of applicants in the coming weeks,” she remarked. “To ensure a seamless admissions process, we have prepared a comprehensive plan and allocated adequate staff resources to handle the influx of applications promptly and efficiently.”
ACSOM is the first non-profit international medical school in the Caribbean, established in collaboration with the government of Dominica. With a dedicated team of full-time physician faculty for small group teaching, ACSOM provides a supportive and engaging learning environment. Moreover, ACSOM boasts an impressive roster of adjunct faculty members who bring their training and experience from revered medical schools such as Yale University School of Medicine, Weil Cornell Medical College, New York University, Penn State University’s Milton S. Hersey Medical Center, SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Western University in Canada.
