Allegheny Health Network(AHN) has launched a unique Weekend Nurse Program as part of its continuing efforts to address the labor shortages impacting the health care industry nationwide. Open to nurses across the region, regardless of where they work, the new AHN program is designed to provide flexible work-life solutions.
Unlike the traditional weekend programs nurses are accustomed to, the new AHN Weekend Nurse Program provides nurses the opportunity to make extra money on their terms and schedules. Without disrupting their current work schedule during the week, they can pick up shifts on the weekend at any AHN hospital. The commitment can be as little as one eight-hour shift a month, or as many as six 12-hour shifts a month on the weekends of their choosing. The program is open to nurses who currently work at hospitals outside of AHN, with rates of $85 per hour, as well as AHN exempt non-bedside nurses, who will earn time and a half plus $48 per hour. The program will be in place through the first quarter of 2023.

We are building the workforce of the future while supporting the workforce of the present.”
Continuing, Zangerle said nurses in the new program can pick up a shift or two on any given weekend and essentially be compensated about as much as they would make in a week of wages.

Qualified nurse applicants are needed at the following AHN hospitals: Allegheny General, West Penn, Forbes, Jefferson, Wexford, Canonsburg, Allegheny Valley, and Saint Vincent. Nurses will be quickly on-boarded to units where the need is greatest, including medical-surgical and telemetry.
Other innovative offerings in the AHN “Work Your Way” program include a mobile internal staffing team model in which nurses are deployed to different AHN hospitals based on the needs of patients; and the traditional “weekend warrior” and “night owl” programs for AHN nurses who prefer to make those their primary jobs.
Zangerle said nurses at AHN are empowered to practice at their highest level in all settings, putting the patient at the center of their work by embracing evidence-based practices and collaborating across clinical disciplines.
