Reinforcing its commitment to elevate the human experience in healthcare, The Beryl Institute publishes a new white paper, A Global Inquiry on Excellence in the Diagnostic Journey: The Power of Human Experience in Healthcare. This paper is grounded in accounts from healthcare leaders, clinicians, staff, patients and family members on the actions and efforts that lead to excellence in the diagnostic experience. The white paper evaluates the diagnostic experience from a range of lenses including the scheduling and timing of appointments or procedures, the process of the experience overall, the environment in which the experience occurs, communication and engagement during the diagnostic journey and how results and planning are managed.

The goal of this global inquiry was to identify what matters most throughout the diagnostic experience and to identify, compare and contrast perspectives to better understand and act in ways that benefit all in healthcare. This inquiry followed a two-phase approach, starting with a diverse focus group conversation to help frame the broader context. The focus group’s responses then helped frame a survey that was conducted online.

The white paper illustrates key considerations for organizations and leaders to excel at the diagnostic experience, including:

  • How you communicate matters.
  • Take the time to be present for your patients.
  • Understand the priorities of your patients.
  • Ensure opportunities for partnership.

“It is in the ability of all in healthcare to remember the person traveling the diagnostic journey as just that: a human being with a story, loved ones, fears and dreams,” said Jason Wolf, Ph.D., CPXP, President & CEO of The Beryl Institute. “Each life is unique, even in the most common of diagnostic processes; therefore, each experience is unlike any other. It is in our ability to be present for one another with the foundational processes in place that will ensure not only the best in diagnostic experience but the best in human experience is delivered.”
