Abt To Manage Nursing Home Network for Tracking SARS-CoV-2 and Other Infectious Diseases through New CDC Award

“This project will enable CDC to quickly understand the spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, in this vulnerable population,” said Dr. Danielle Hunt, vice president of Abt’s Public Health Portfolio.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded Abt Associates a three-year contract valued at up to $24 million to establish the Nursing Home Public Health Response Network. The network of geographically dispersed nursing homes will hold pre-positioned research teams so they can conduct rapid-response data collection on SARS-CoV-2 variants and other emerging infectious diseases.

Abt will serve as the Coordinating Center for the network, which will conduct multiple studies. The network includes academic partners and affiliated nursing homes, quality improvement organizations representing most states, and laboratory services. The data will inform infection prevention and control strategies for nursing homes and help accelerate CDC initiatives to address infectious diseases, particularly diseases that cause substantial morbidity and mortality in this population.

“This project will enable CDC to quickly understand the spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, in this vulnerable population,” said Dr. Danielle Hunt, vice president of Abt’s Public Health Portfolio. “The data will help to inform protocols to protect residents, their families, and nursing home staff.”

The first year of the contract is valued at $8 million, as is each of two option years. CDC’s Division of Healthcare Quality and Promotion awarded the contract under the Safety and Healthcare Epidemiology Prevention Research Development Program contract vehicle.
