VTCSOM Alumni Extend Ut Prosim Philosophy to Kenya: An Unforgettable Medical Mission

Kenya Relief mission – Dr. Kam’s professional journey

Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Alumni, Joanna Kam and her husband Robert Summey, recent participants in an inspiring medical mission to Kenya, have taken their commitment to service to a global level. Both have an inherent dedication to the Ut Prosim philosophy, “That I may serve”, that permeates the Virginia Tech community. This commitment led them on a journey to extend their medical expertise and compassion to communities in need in Kenya.

Their trip was undertaken with Kenya Relief, an organization committed to providing life-changing healthcare and support to underprivileged communities. Together, Kam and Summey embarked on an unforgettable journey, transforming lives with their medical expertise and dedication.

Over the course of their mission, they performed 87 surgeries, provided necessary treatments to 469 patients, and administered essential health education to individuals. From treating basic health ailments to performing complex surgical procedures, Kam and Summey worked tirelessly to provide the best possible care.

Yet, this mission extended beyond the mere provision of medical services. It was an opportunity for cultural exchange and mutual understanding, a chance to connect with people from a different part of the world. This mission allowed Kam, Summey, and the entire team to touch lives in ways that transcended their medical roles, fostering relationships and mutual respect that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Kenya Relief: Fostering Hope, Delivering Change

Kenya Relief, a nonprofit organization operating for over 20 years, stands at the forefront of change, aiming to reshape the healthcare landscape in Kenya. Its mission stems from a deeply rooted commitment to bridging the healthcare gap in underprivileged communities, offering a beacon of hope for those in need.

The organization provides a wide array of services, encompassing medical and surgical care, education, and orphan care. Kenya Relief’s Britney’s Home of Grace, a safe haven for orphans, demonstrates its comprehensive approach to community support.

Kenya Relief’s medical missions bring in countless volunteers from across the globe. These professionals selflessly lend their skills and expertise, bringing essential healthcare services to thousands of Kenyans annually. To date, the organization has treated over 100,000 patients and performed over 6,000 surgeries, numbers that continue to grow as more volunteers contribute to this noble cause.

However, Kenya Relief’s impact transcends the numbers. It’s the individual lives touched, the communities transformed, and the hope kindled that truly reflect the organization’s spirit and mission. Each patient treated, each child cared for, each life changed, underscores the profound impact Kenya Relief continues to make to communities that need it the most.
