HMP Global, the leading omnichannel healthcare events and education company, today announced that Dr. Peter Weiden, internationally renowned expert on schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders, is joining Psych Congress as a consultant. The move solidifies the organization’s commitment to advancing mental health education to improve outcomes for patients.
Psych Congress provides a unique, integrated forum to connect members of the entire mental health team. In his new role, Dr. Weiden will provide guidance on educational programming throughout the Psych Congress portfolio, including the Psych Congress national meeting and Psych Congress Regionals, Psych Congress Elevate, Psych Congress Europe, and the Psych Congress NP Institute.
“Dr. Weiden’s extensive background in psychopharmacology, clinical trials, and evidence-based practices has made him a sought-after authority in the field,” said Psych Congress Co-Chair Rakesh Jain, MD, MPH, clinical professor, Department of Psychiatry, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, Midland, Texas. “His insights will be a substantial asset to Psych Congress and the clinicians we serve, his expertise will help us deepen our educational offerings, and his contributions will enhance the overall attendee experience.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Weiden has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and made fundamental contributions and innovations addressing mental illness. His academic career includes positions as tenured full professor of psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center from 1999-2007 and at UIC Medical Center from 2007-2014, and he is currently serving as a visiting professor of psychiatry at Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. He served as Chief Medical Officer for Uptown Research in Chicago and served as a clinical investigator for new and emerging treatments for schizophrenia from 2014-2016.
Dr. Weiden was recognized as “Best Doctor” in New York City and Chicago respectively for his work and contributions as an outstanding clinical expert in the treatment of patients with severe mental illness. He was recognized three times by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) with a “NAMI Exemplary Psychiatrist” award. From 2016 to early 2023, he worked for biotechnology companies focused on new treatments for persons with serious mental illness, most recently supporting the development of a promising investigational treatment for schizophrenia in the pipeline that works differently than currently available treatments for schizophrenia. He will be joining the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at SUNY Stony Brook as a Visiting Clinical Professor of Psychiatry to return to academic educational and research missions.
“As the prevalence of mental health issues rises, it is paramount to invest in quality education and training for healthcare professionals,” said Randy Robbin, President, HMP Education, a subsidiary of HMP Global. “Psych Congress has earned a reputation as the premier choice for mental health professionals seeking the latest knowledge, research, and practical insights with a goal of improving outcomes for patients.
