“When learning about challenges overcome by real people in the past, it can help you plan your path for a meaningful future,” Belmont said.

As a nurse, author Mary F. Belmont found herself fascinated by the history of her profession. While collecting material for a publication, she stumbled upon archives from a New York hospital, chronicling the experiences of nurses who worked in the U.S during the immigration era.

As she dove deeper into the lives of these nurses, she became inspired to share their stories, through her new novel, “Stepping over Rooftops: Health Care During the Era of Mass Immigration to America,” a tale of a young nurse trainee’s journey into adulthood while contributing to the promise of America through healthcare.

Set in 1882, the book focuses on 18-year-old Rosa Campo, an Italian immigrant and one of the lucky few chosen to train to become a nurse. As they learn to step from rooftop to rooftop when caring for poor patients who live on the least expensive top floor, Rosa and the other nurses diligently work to fulfill their dreams of healing and changing the world by advocating for healthcare for the underserved.

“I wanted to capture what it was like for these young women who came from poor migrant families and have little choice about their futures,” Belmont said. “Most are expected to marry and produce children. However, these women brought new approaches to patient care and played a key role in addressing the healthcare needs of marginalized communities.”

Belmont hopes by sharing these stories, she will encourage young people to consider entering the profession and inspire them to make an important contribution to the world by advocating for the underserved.

“When learning about challenges overcome by real people in the past, it can help you plan your path for a meaningful future,” Belmont said.
