“Providers and patients need to raise their awareness levels so those at risk will recognize signs of uterine cancer and are screened appropriately and in a timely manner,” says Dr. Mariko Rajamand

According to the USA Today article, a new study showed that Hispanic women had the highest uterine cancer rate among young reproductive-aged women between ages 35 and 39. Cases have been rising a steady 4% each year since 2001, a rate that is 50% higher than that of white women, according to the study of more than 840,000 uterine cancer patients published in the journal Gynecologic Oncology. Experts are trying to figure out what is causing the disparity and raise recognition among medical professionals and patients. Physicians need to be on high alert for signs and symptoms of uterine abnormalities in this population to provide timely intervention. Obesity increases the risk of uterine cancer, as does diabetes, and both of those disorders are found disproportionately in Hispanic people. However obesity may be an oversimplified explanation for the problem, and more studies need to explore additional reasons for the disparity. The article stressed the importance of addressing social determinants of health within communities of color and helping those women with lifestyle improvements and diet. This is as well as providing access to evaluations to catch precancerous lesions early.
“This study is very alarming. Providers need to recognize these disparities as another sign of healthcare inequity and prevent the trend from continuing. Providers and patients need to raise their awareness levels so those at risk will recognize signs of uterine cancer and are screened appropriately and in a timely manner,” says Dr. Mariko Rajamand
