NCPDP Announces Highlights from its 2023 Annual Conference, “The Great Race to Close Gaps in Care”

NCPDP announced today highlights from its 2023 Annual Technology & Business Conference, The Great Race to Close Gaps in Care. The high energy, high impact Annual Conference provided hundreds of attendees from across the healthcare ecosystem with riveting keynote speakers, topical educational sessions, networking opportunities and important, member-exclusive updates during the State of the Association address. During the Awards & Recognition Event, NCPDP announced the recipients of its Champion Award and member awards.

The conference opened with a powerful Keynote address from the 16th U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral Brett Giroir, M.D., on lessons learned from a life of public service. Dr. Giroir was a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force in 2020 and author of a new book “Memoir of a Pandemic, Fighting COVID from the Front Lines to the White House”. Conference attendees received a copy of Dr. Giroir’s new book and had a chance to talk with him at a book signing sponsored by the NCPDP Foundation. Keynote speaker, John O’Leary, a childhood severe burn survivor, speaker and bestselling author left the audience in awe with his epic story of overcoming impossible odds. Featured speaker and conference favorite, Doug Long, returned to deliver his informative IQVIA™ Market Trends Report. Closing Keynoter Robin Farmanfarmaian, speaker, author, and tech entrepreneur gave a powerful address about the future of healthcare, technology, and patient empowerment. Educational track sessions spanned important industry topics such as revisions to the National Drug Code; specialty ePrescribing; digital therapeutics; prior authorization automation; Pharmacist eCare Plan/EHR Integration; S1 transaction; interoperability; leveraging immunization information systems; NCPDP Foundation Investments; a legal update; specialty pharmacy medical benefit (J-Code) and PBM carve out; and more.

Other conference highlights include:

  • Mara N. Mitchel, Vice President, Pharmacy Programs, Oscar Health, was appointed Chair of the NCPDP Board of Trustees.
  • Christian Tadrus, R.Ph., PharmD FASCP, NSC, Independent Pharmacist, was appointed Vice Chair of the NCPDP Board of Trustees.
  • NCPDP 2023-2024 Board of Trustees’ newly elected members took office: Mindy Smith, R.Ph., MHA, Senior Vice President, Professional Affairs, Tabula Rasa HealthCare, newly elected to the Board of Trustees for a first term; Pooja Babbrah, MBA, PBM Practice Lead, Point-of-Care Partners, re-elected for a second term; Morgan Bojorquez, Assistant Vice President, Pharmacy Clinical Integration, Humana, Inc., re-elected for a second term.
  • NCPDP named Laura Topor, Senior Manager, Cognizant as recipient of its prestigious TIME (The Individual Member Excellence) Award.
  • Leann Lewis, Director of Industry Relations, Synerio, was presented with the Benjamin D. Ward Distinguished Member Award.
  • Kristol Chism, Director of Industry Relations, Change Healthcare, received the Rising Star Award.
  • NCPDP’s 2023 Champion Award was presented to Admiral Brett Giroir, M.D., 16th U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health and Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors for Altesa Biosciences, Inc.


In her “State of the Association” address on Tuesday, NCPDP President & CEO Lee Ann Stember shared updates on NCPDP achievements and unveiled its updated strategic plan. Stember announced the creation of Work Group 20 Coordination of Care & Innovation, which will support all of NCPDP’s priority goals by advancing standards that enable pharmacists to collaborate in new ways with other healthcare providers to close gaps in care. In addition, Stember revealed a member-exclusive update on early results from an NCPDP Foundation-funded pilot study, which validates key components of NCPDP’s National Facilitator Model and the value of the Universal Patient Identifier (UPI), powered by Experian Health UIM and NCPDP Standards™ which can strengthen pandemic and epidemic preparedness. During the State of the Association, Michelle R. Vancura, Chair, NCPDP Foundation, provided an update on its robust grant funding activities which align with and support the work of NCPDP by proving the value of NCPDP standards.

NCPDP’s 2024 Annual Technology & Business Conference will be held May 6-8, 2024, at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona.
