Phoenix-Micron, Inc. launches the next generation of its MICRON in vivo ophthalmic imaging platform for small animal research


Designed to enhance efficiency and repeatability, the MICRON 5 platform boasts a range of core, patent-pending features, including interchangeable imaging sensors and software-controlled camera operation, expanded excitation and barrier filter capabilities, and new depth of field adjustments.

Phoenix-Micron, Inc. today announced the launch of the all-new Phoenix MICRON® 5 imaging system, the latest breakthrough in small animal ophthalmic imaging technology. With over 450 published studies utilizing MICRON imaging systems, the MICRON platform has provided researchers with precision tools for imaging and data capture for over 14 years. The patented MICRON 5 is the next generation of the Company’s industry-leading platform to power eye and eye-brain research. Orders are being accepted for MICRON 5 systems now, and first deliveries are expected this summer.

These new capabilities provide endless opportunities for researchers to fine-tune their in vivo imaging and capture more precise data more easily.

Understanding the importance of protecting the investment MICRON customers make in capital equipment, the MICRON 5 camera is compatible with the imaging modalities from the prior MICRON IV generation. This allows for a smooth upgrade to the newest technology platform with the lowest total-cost-of-ownership.

The MICRON 5 introduces powerful capabilities to enhance the quality of imaging and data capture in experiments with small animals:

  • Interchangeable camera sensors offer the option to fine-tune fidelity, quantum efficiency, and spatial precision to more precisely image specific cellular and molecular features
  • Focus, illumination, and filter selection are now under software control, speeding the imaging workflow and increasing the metadata that the MICRON 5 camera can capture about each image, enhancing analysis and experiment repeatability
  • Excitation and barrier filters have been completely redesigned to radically improve usability, automatically detect installed filters, and make it easier to use a wide range of wavelengths to tailor illumination and sampled light to your requirements
  • A new adjustable aperture has been added to offer control over depth of field, enabling better imaging of dimensional structures including tumors, cysts, and properties of the vitreous. In addition, this improves the ability to image highly reflective retina, such as those present in albino rodents.
  • The MICRON 5 camera is fully compatible with the new MICRON LT2 lens technology, shortening the time required to quickly change imaging modalities with precision alignment
  • The MICRON 5 camera is fully compatible with the newly released MICRON Software Suite, which delivers advanced image and data management capabilities to help efficiently power your research and data analysis
