This mission is an opportunity to get back to giving. To provide surgical care for those who need it, and feel joy in the act of giving. Making a difference in patients’ lives fuels my love for medicine, and doing it here in Kenya reminds me to focus on what matters.

Dr. Joana Kam of Kam Facial Plastic Surgery is proud to announce that she will be attending the KenyaRelief.org international medical mission to Migori, Kenya, in March 2023. KenyaRelief.org is a non-profit organization that provides life-changing surgeries for impoverished people in southwestern Kenya who need medical care. Dr. Kam and the mission team are expected to perform about 70 to 80 surgeries and provide medical treatment for an additional 300 to 400 patients.
Joanna Kam, MD, is an expertly qualified otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon who has received additional certification in facial plastic surgery. She will bring her medical expertise to Migori, Kenya, alongside a team of international medical professionals specializing in various skills. The team will spend 10 days in Kenya performing surgeries for individuals who might not have a chance to meet with a doctor otherwise.
KenyaRelief.org is a non-profit organization that provides medical aid and assistance to communities in Kenya. Founded by Steve James in memory of his late daughter Brittany, the organization started as a simple mission to meet Brittany’s former sponsor child. While in Kenya, Steve saw firsthand the pain and suffering of many people in the community and made it his mission to make a difference.
Steve began by bringing much-needed medicines to Migori and distributing them from a makeshift clinic under a tree. Over the years, KenyaRelief.org expanded their services and they now operate a full-service medical and surgery clinic, a school and an orphanage in southwestern Kenya. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for people living in the region by providing access to healthcare, clean water, education, and housing.
KenyaRelief.org typically runs 23 mission trips a year. The mission teams consist of surgeons and medical professionals who encompass a broad range of specialties, including eye specialists, ENT specialists, OB/GYN specialists, general surgeons and pediatric surgeons.
Many of the mission teams work out of Kenya Relief’s Brase Clinic and Vision Center. The clinic offers comprehensive medical care to over 15,000 patients annually in a region where access to cost-effective healthcare is scarce. Every year, over 1,000 life-altering surgeries are performed by international surgical teams in conjunction with the clinic’s local staff.
Additionally, the clinic operates a full-fledged eye diagnostic center, where ophthalmology teams perform nearly 200 cataract surgeries twice a year. For many patients, including those who have been blind for years due to cataracts, this is their first visit to an eye doctor.
Dr. Joana Kam will attend the next KenyaRelief.org mission taking place from March 16, 2023, to March 26, 2023. During that time she will offer her medical expertise in facial reconstruction, functional nasal and sinus surgery, scar revision surgery, and skin cancer reconstruction to perform surgeries as needed in the community.

“This mission is an opportunity to get back to giving. To provide surgical care for those who need it and feel joy in the act of giving. Making a difference in patients’ lives fuels my love for medicine, and doing it here in Kenya reminds me to focus on what matters.”
