Customers of the leading breast pump distributor and breastfeeding resource center, Aeroflow Breastpumps can now access free, clinically-effective and on-demand mental health support tools to help reduce postpartum stress, anxiety, and depression—from the comfort and convenience of their home.
App-based mental health care and psychoeducation has been made available through a partnership between Canopie and Aeroflow Breastpumps, providing access to clinically-effective programs that help parents and caregivers manage the highs and lows of parenthood.
This partnership marks a meaningful and progressive move for Aeroflow Breastpumps, a key leader in the insurance-eligible maternal health industry. Research has long shown the correlation between a mom’s breastfeeding relationship and her mental health, with breastfeeding complications increasing the risk of developing a perinatal mood disorder (PMAD) like postpartum depression. By weaving a mental health intervention into lactation support, this first-of-its-kind partnership opens up the door to better, more seamless care delivery for moms.
“Everyday, our team hears from moms who are struggling, says Jennifer Jordan, VP of sales operations at Aeroflow Healthcare. The conversations begin with worries about feeding their baby, but so often they are intertwined with other fears, anxieties, sadness, and frustrations. The clear overlap between breastfeeding and mental health makes our partnership with Canopie a natural fit and enables us to provide a more holistic solution in support of our mission to improve maternal health outcomes from the earliest stages of pregnancy and well into the postpartum journey.”
Canopie launched in December 2020 with their research-based 12-day program that uses clinically-validated therapeutic techniques for preventing and treating depression and anxiety during the perinatal period. Developed alongside top perinatal mental health researchers, the program draws from cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy and compassion focused therapy to create high-impact asynchronous sessions and is personalized for each user’s mood goals and stage of parenting. An American Academy of Pediatrics STAR Center resource, Canopie allows users to gain real-time insights into their emotional health and direct them to the most effective tools for managing their current mood.
The application customizes audio and text-based therapeutic programs in English and Spanish framed in terms of parenting challenges like sleep, feeding, and bonding. It also escalates the most vulnerable users to live support.
While as many as one in seven moms in the general population struggle during this period—and as high as one in three of more vulnerable moms, there is still a sense of shame and stigma surrounding feeling low during this time. A digital health intervention like Canopie not only normalizes and helps them navigate these feelings, but also meets parents where they are most comfortable—in the privacy of their own home.
The research shows that digital tools can help prevent up to 50% of perinatal mental health conditions, which not only saves billions of dollars in healthcare, but can also save millions of families tremendous heartache.
Anne Wanlund, co-founder and CEO of Canopie shares, “We are incredibly excited about this partnership with Aeroflow Breastpumps. Our hopes are that by partnering with something as universal as pumping and breastfeeding, we not only help to reduce the stigma associated with seeking mental health support, but we are able to access parents early on in their journey—prenatally, when they are stocking their postpartum supplies. Given that our approach is prevention-based, reaching moms during pregnancy to educate and engage them is essential for reducing the prevalence of PMADs.”
”Untreated mental health conditions account for poor health outcomes for both mom and baby,” says Jordan. “Our focus has always been on expanding the accessibility of insurance-covered supplies and services, and Canopie’s goal of making mental health resources available everywhere, at the tap of the button, aligns perfectly with that mission. Thousands of parents and caregivers will gain access to the Canopie app through our platform, and there are already more plans underway for continued investment in Canopie to expand and deepen mental health support across the perinatal continuum of care.”
This partnership with Aeroflow Breastpumps extends beyond access to digital intervention. Canopie will provide group educational workshops with clinical mental health experts focused on the intersection between mental health and common challenges of parenthood, such as breastfeeding, relationships, identity, and more. Also on the horizon are more integrations of perinatal mental health into the Aeroflow Breastpumps experience.
Since launching their partnership, class engagement from the Aeroflow Breastpumps community has been high and met with enthusiasm, with upwards of 40% of class participants engaging in the Canopie digital intervention.
Wanlund shares, “As new moms ourselves, we knew there was demand for more mental health support when it comes to preparing to feed your baby and feeding your baby, but the challenge has always been making it feel accessible and relatable. When our first classes sold out, we were excited because it meant that the Aeroflow community was hungry—and ready—for this kind of support. Our whole goal is to make mental health support less stigmatized and more available, and we’re honored to be able to do that for this community.”
