Allergy Standards Ltd calls for a larger focus on Indoor Air Quality

“Focusing on helping people breathe healthier air, our mission has always been simple but the impact it makes is immense. It allows individuals to take better care of their health, and protect themselves against a significant health hazard like indoor air pollution”

Global health education company Allergy Standards Limited (ASL) joined other home and personal care experts at the latest Cleaning Products US Conference last September, leading a discussion on the importance of clean indoor air and how this helps prevent negative health consequences.

ASL Chief Strategy Officer Dr. John Ryan headed a session called “Cleaning for purpose not just appearance,” where he detailed how indoor air pollution is a major, yet underestimated environmental health risk. The concentration of indoor pollutants is [two to five times higher compared to outdoor pollutants, posing an issue since most individuals spend up to 90% of their time in built indoor environments like their homes, offices, or schools.

“The World Health Organization noted last year that air pollution is estimated to cause 7 million premature deaths each year. Meanwhile, further research from this June shows that air pollution takes away up to two years of a person’s life,” said Dr. John Ryan at the event. “It is then essential to put a greater focus on improving indoor air quality to help minimize disease risks. The pandemic has fortunately triggered changes in the frequency of cleaning and the amount of products used. Now, it’s imperative that these habits continue and that cleaning products are examined thoroughly,” he explained.

Dr. John Ryan also gave attendees a better understanding of how ASL helps global brands design products that contribute to a healthier indoor environment. They work with brands across a wide range of industries, conducting industry-specific education programs and robust testing to ensure that the highest product safety measures are consistently met.

The company offers the asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program, a trusted and sought-after third party independent mark that confirms that a product is suitable for those with respiratory sensitivities and contribute to improved indoor air quality. To date, ASL has certified over 50 million products worldwide, including many from trusted brands such as 3M, LG, Volvo, DeLonghi and many more.

With the participation of Dr. John Ryan, ASL, and leading experts from the US EPA, the American Cleaning Institute, P&G and other attendees, Cleaning Products US sparked a larger conversation around consumer trends, innovations, developments, and other new insights about cleanliness – especially for today’s post-COVID landscape.

“Focusing on helping people breathe healthier air, our mission has always been simple but the impact it makes is immense. It allows individuals to take better care of their health, and protect themselves against a significant health hazard like indoor air pollution,” said Dr. Ryan. “We share the same vision with our fellow educational bodies, manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers at Cleaning Products US to shine a bigger light on cleanliness and its role in health, safety, and sustainability as we pave the way towards creating a cleaner world,” he ended.
