“Other companies that have attempted to launch cannabis vending machines have really overcomplicated it. They make you download an app, or they use vein reading technology. For us it all comes down to the scan of an ID,” said IDScan.net Director of Cannabis Business, Kenny Peddicord.

IDScan.net’s new marijuana vending machine will debut at November’s MJBizCon in Las Vegas, the world’s largest cannabis industry conference. With a 43” touchscreen, room for up to 450 individually packaged cannabis products, and a robotic interior manufactured by FastCorp Vending, Age Restricted Vending (ARV) is the first of its kind.

IDScan.net’s cannabis vending machine overcomes the primary hurdle which has stymied launches of other brands – age and identity verification. By integrating a best-in-class ID authentication device, the machine is able to detect nearly 98% of fake IDs. And by using a high resolution webcam and proprietary anti-spoofing software, the machine matches the purchaser to the image on the ID. Because of the system’s high degree of accuracy, no attendant is required to dispense age restricted products, and the entire process can be completed in less than 15 seconds.

Unattended retail is expected to grow to a $46B market by 2027, driven by consumer desire for convenience and touch-free purchase. However, cannabis has been unable to get in on the action due to strict laws around age verification, operational hours, and dispensary zoning. Cannabis vending machines have the potential to combat all of these challenges.

“Other companies that have attempted to launch cannabis vending machines have really overcomplicated it. They make you download an app, or they use vein reading technology. For us it all comes down to the scan of an ID,” said IDScan.net Director of Cannabis Business, Kenny Peddicord.

“We have been authenticating IDs for more than 20 years and we knew that using IDs and facial recognition would be the easiest, most secure, way to perform age verification.” The system uses tools and workflows similar to what is already being used in many of the country’s top dispensaries.

In addition to age verification powered by IDScan.net, the machine also boasts Thru Solutions’ best-in-class inventory management software and purchasing interface. Checkout and payment processing is performed using a MagTek DynaFlex Pro, which supports swipe, chip insert, and tap payments for cannabis products. MagTek’s Magensa Decrypt and Forward Gateway service is being used to provide point-to-point encryption for sensitive data.

ARV is rated for outdoor use, and does not require Wi-Fi, making it ideal for a variety of environments including festivals and events.

“In my years in the unattended retail business I have received thousands of inquiries from businesses looking to sell cannabis, alcohol, and other products which require age verification,” said Dave Russo, CEO of DSR35. “This is the first time we’ve been able to verify age at the machine. Our solution operates with far more accuracy than a bouncer checking an ID in a dark bar. You can be very confident in a customer’s identity even without a budtender present.” DSR35 has already shipped similar machines for the sale of other age restricted products such as CBD and ammo.

ARV will be on display in IDScan.net’s booth #2319 on-site at MJBizCon, November 16-18 in Las Vegas. Conference attendees will be able to test the machine by scanning their ID. Though the machine won’t be dispensing cannabis at the conference it will be dispensing fun swag from IDScan.net as well as other contributors to the machine’s technology.
