“This treatment is still considered new, and not everyone that tears their ACL is a qualifying candidate. The fast recovery my patient Adam Marcu experienced is very exciting,” said Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow.

Dr. Jonathan Glashow is known as one of the best orthopedic surgeons specializing in sports injuries, cutting-edge joint treatments and complex fractures, with decades of experience working with professional sports teams as well as patients from all over the globe. The recent news segment that aired on News 12 Brooklyn on Aug 31, 2022, featured Dr. Glashow and his patient, soccer player and coach Adam Marcu. The story focused on Dr. Glashow’s surgical procedure and rehab plan which cut Mr. Marcu’s ACL tear recovery time in half. The ACL is a key ligament in the center of the knee that provides stability in sports where pivoting is common. Dr. Glashow had previously treated one of Mr. Marcu’s injuries in college and approved him as a candidate for a new procedure, which allowed the surgeon to repair the native ligament, rather than taking a piece of foreign tissue.
Dr. Glashow’s BEAR (Bridge Enhanced ACL Restoration) procedure is a less-invasive medical advancement, enabling the body to heal its own torn ACL. Unlike reconstruction, Dr. Glashow was able to utilize the BEAR® Implant, which does not require a second surgical wound site to remove a healthy tendon from another part of the leg or use a donor’s tendon. The implant acts as a bridge between the two ends of the torn ACL. The surgeon injects a small amount of the patient’s own blood into the implant, inserting it between the torn ends of the ACL in a minimally invasive procedure, and the combination enables the body to heal the torn ends of the ACL back together and maintain its original attachments to the femur and tibia. As the ACL heals, the implant is absorbed by the body, within approximately eight weeks. While the rehab started slow, Adam Marcu shared that after only one month, he began to see rapid advances in his rehab progress, and in just five months was able to return to the field.
“This treatment is still considered new, and not everyone that tears their ACL is a qualifying candidate. The fast recovery my patient Adam Marcu experienced is very exciting,” said Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow.
