“It’s an honor to partner with the Foundation for Women’s Cancer to help raise awareness and encourage women to prioritize their health by knowing how to recognize the signs and symptoms of gyn cancer in their own body and speak to their doctor about screening, treatment and care.” – Marsai Martin

The Foundation for Women’s Cancer (FWC) is pleased to announce that Marsai Martin, known for her roles in the ABC sitcom Black-ish and Universal’s Little, will be a Celebrity Ambassador for Move4Her. Now in its third year, Move4Her is the FWC’s primary fundraising event to power research and awareness of the five gynecologic (gyn) cancers – cervical, ovarian, uterine/endometrial, vaginal or vulvar cancer. For the first time, this year Move4Her will be a Month of Movement held throughout September for Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month.

“It’s an honor to partner with the Foundation for Women’s Cancer to help raise awareness and encourage women to prioritize their health by knowing how to recognize the signs and symptoms of gyn cancer in their own body and speak to their doctor about screening, treatment and care. This cause is a personal passion of mine because my grandmother fought a long, difficult battle with cervical cancer,” said Marsai Martin. “Every five minutes a woman is diagnosed with one of the five gynecologic cancers, but many women aren’t even aware of what the five types are before a diagnosis. We are challenging you to join us this September and move for five minutes each day to help raise funds that will make a difference in the future of gynecologic cancer care.”

“We are thrilled to partner with Marsai Martin, who is committed to sharing her personal family history with gynecologic cancer to encourage all women to put their health first,” said Ginger J. Gardner, MD, Chair, Foundation for Women’s Cancer, Gynecologic Cancer Surgeon and Vice Chair of Hospital Operations at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. “One of the biggest barriers to early detection of gynecologic cancers is lack of awareness and we know that patient education is very important to help improve patient outcomes, and Marsai is using her platform to help change that in a meaningful way.”

Move4Her proceeds help fund crucial research, including the $50,000 FWC Move4Her Research Award awarded to a young investigator passionate about advancing treatment or care, as well as awareness initiatives such as Move the Message – FWC’s national campaign to increase awareness and drive early diagnosis of the five gyn cancers, especially among historically marginalized communities.

Register today at Move4Her.org to join the movement and participate in a virtual celebration at the end of the month with Marsai Martin – and other surprise guests – and the opportunity to connect by sharing stories and experiences. Visit Move4Her.com today to learn more, register and follow the FWC social platforms (Twitter, Instagram and Facebook) for exciting content all summer long. Let’s move the message and help spread the word about Move4Her!

ABOUT MOVE THE MESSAGE

Move4Her is an extension of Move the Message, a national campaign to increase awareness of gynecologic cancers, with a focus on historically marginalized communities and populations, such as brown and black women and those in rural areas, through dissemination of critical resources to drive earlier detection and diagnosis. These resources are easy to access at http://www.movethemessage.org for both the community at large as well as physicians to share with their patients.

Everyone can join #MoveTheMessage by taking five minutes to post an image or video of themselves in motion – walking, cycling, dancing – with the message, “#MoveTheMessage. 5 Cancers to Know. Take steps today to protect your tomorrows by visiting movethemessage.org” and tagging five people they know.
