Christen Smith, an expert in health, economic development, gender equity, and human capital, has joined Abt Associates as senior vice president, U.S. Domestic Business. She has more than 15 years of experience working with clients ranging from community groups to international organizations and federal agencies, including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs, and State and the Military Health System.
Smith leads a cross-disciplinary team of more than 500 Abt professionals in a new organization that merges two Abt units working in U.S. health, housing, education, workforce and economic development, children and families, nutrition, justice, climate and environment, and other social determinants of health. Her team’s work generates new insights and impact, from conducting rigorous epidemiological studies to assessing the health impacts of climate change and from housing to education.
Before joining Abt, Smith held executive positions at LMI, a mission-driven consulting group focused on the federal government. She previously addressed public health challenges in various roles, including implementing community-based HIV/AIDS interventions as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia and coordinating an inter-office working group on gender-based violence at the U.S. Agency for International Development.
“Christen has the technical background and management experience to accelerate Abt’s social impact in the U.S. domestic space,” says Abt President and CEO Kathleen Flanagan. “As she leads our newly integrated domestic unit, her broad substantive knowledge will enable her to promote multi-sectoral collaboration to the benefit of our clients and the people served by their missions.”
Smith is available for media interviews on the domestic areas she oversees, from our COVID-19 work for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to our criminal justice and environmental work.
