Abt To Continue Operating v-safe COVID-19 Pregnancy Registry Call Center—Wins 3-year, $10M Award from CDC

“It’s critical to get the data because pregnant people aren’t part of clinical trials to determine efficacy and safety,” notes Project Director Gabriella Newes-Adeyi. Fortunately, the data so far suggest the vaccines are safe during pregnancy.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded Abt Associates a three-year, $10 million contract to continue to operate the v-safe COVID-19 Vaccine Pregnancy Registry, which collects data from pregnant, vaccinated people to monitor potential safety issues.

The CDC’s preliminary findings show that mRNA COVID-19 vaccines administered during pregnancy are safe, but CDC needs more data on adverse outcomes such as miscarriage, stillbirth, and pregnancy complications to inform clinical and policy decisions.

Abt’s role will be similar to its tasks on the just-concluded v-safe pregnancy registry contract. The work for our call center includes enrolling new participants, conducting interviews with existing and new registry participants, and creating and submitting weekly analytic datasets and interview metrics to CDC. Interviewers administer surveys to participants once during each trimester, at the end of pregnancy, when the newborn is three months of age, and when the child is 12 months of age.

People receiving COVID-19 vaccinations are encouraged to enroll in the V-safe After Vaccination Health Checker. After registration, vaccinated persons receive a series of text messages at specified intervals asking them to report symptoms via a web survey.

“This award builds on our previous one-year v-safe Pregnancy Registry contract,” notes Project Director Gabriella Newes-Adeyi. “It’s critical to get the data because pregnant people aren’t part of clinical trials to determine efficacy and safety. Fortunately, the data so far suggest the vaccines are safe during pregnancy.”
