Moving Forward, Safely and Effectively Complimentary CME Online Module

Purdue University College of Pharmacy is pleased to offer an online initiative on Opioid REMS. “Opioid REMS: Moving Forward, Safely and Effectively” is designed for physicians and other healthcare providers who are registered prescribers of controlled substances with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration – including physicians, nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), and, in some states, pharmacists. In addition, non-prescribing healthcare team members who support the treatment and management of patients with pain but are not authorized to prescribe, such as pharmacists and nurses, will benefit from participating in this educational series.

Managing patients with chronic and acute pain can be a challenge but is even more so in today’s climate. When managing these patients, clinicians need to know how their clinical practice compares to the experts. Opioid REMS: Moving Forward, Safely and Effectively has been developed to provide clinicians with the needed education in the hopes of stemming the tide of the current opioid crisis. In a series of 6 continuing medical education (CME) activities, Dr. Charles Vega will lead discussions that utilize augmented reality to provide critical information and tools that clinicians can integrate into their daily practice – immediately impacting their patients with chronic and acute pain. Dr. Vega is a Clinical Professor, Family Medicine at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.

The goals of this CME initiative are to:

1. Reduce the adverse outcomes of addiction, unintentional overdoses, and death resulting from inappropriate prescribing, abuse, and misuse of opioids.

2. Improve the knowledge and competence of healthcare providers treating patients with pain, both chronic and acute, when identifying the options for effectively providing treatment to these patients.

3. Create a personalized learning experience utilizing a dynamic mix of reality-based, moderated, clinical discussions regarding specific patient case examples. A personalized spacing and retention strategy built upon a microlearning design, will also support learners’ engagement with the content over time.

This online education activity also features top doctors in the US, including Mohammed Issa, MD, Edgar Ross, MD, with Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and Wendy L. Wright, DNP, ANP-BC, FNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, FNA, who is one of America’s Top NP Award Winner, Point of Care Network.

Upon successful completion of the CME activity, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the basic elements of pain management, including the mechanisms of action of pain.

2. Employ appropriate screening tools to effectively assess patients with pain, including identifying those with potential risk factors that could lead to abuse and addiction.

3. Create effective, individualized treatment plans for patients with acute and chronic pain, while integrating opioid analgesics as necessary to address the needs of the patient.

4. Employ a variety of therapeutic options in the development of effective treatment plans, including the use of non-opioid pharmacology and non-pharmacological approaches.

5. Manage ongoing therapy for patients with pain and modify treatment regimens as needed to achieve adequate pain relief.

6. Monitor and modify pain treatment plans, including the need to discontinue opioid analgesics in a safe and effective manner.

7. Utilize best practices in counseling patients with pain, and their caregivers, about safe and effective use of opioid analgesic therapies, including treatment of opioid overdose.

8. Apply the fundamental elements of addiction medicine to effectively identify and manage patients with opioid use disorder.
