Many stories in the Bible are about men and most studies do not include a female perspective on the lived experiences of women in the Bible. In “Truthful: Reaching Back…Moving Forward” by Rita Sparrow and Uzi Miera Ya’akova, the authors focus on the stories that depict ordinary women doing extraordinary things. The book encourages reflection amongst readers as the world moves forward and embraces what these women did to change and contribute to history.

Examining the lives of notable women, this study of biblical stories teaches the significance of the Black women who brought civilization into existence. With guidance from the Holy Spirit, readers can gain an understanding of who these women were, how they lived and what they endured. This collection serves as a manifestation of victory for all women of color.

Sparrow and Ya’akova emphasize the importance of looking back to the places, memories, hardships, victories and fears that history has revealed if the world is to move forward positively and embrace purpose and intention. The authors ultimately highlight women’s important and historical role in society and encourage discussion about events in history for a better outlook moving forward.
