“Older adults can experience great pleasure from sex toys but don’t necessarily know which brands are safe,” she says. “My book explains how to find and use pleasure toys that don’t contain potentially toxic ingredients and unsafe materials.”

The new sexual revolution is here, and it involves sex toys.
That’s just part of what author Brenda Dressler, Ph.D., reveals in her newly published nonfiction book, Sex Toys: Putting the BOOM back in boomers.
Dr. Dressler, a teacher who has specialized in sex education for 50 years, wrote the book as a guide to show older adults how to choose and use body-safe sex toys. “Older adults can experience great pleasure from sex toys but don’t necessarily know which brands are safe,” she says. “My book explains how to find and use pleasure toys that don’t contain potentially toxic ingredients and unsafe materials.”
There is indeed a need for this guidance because the sex toy industry is growing but is largely unregulated.
Revenue for the global sex toy market is projected to rise from $28.64 billion to $52.7 billion between 2019 and 2026, according to market and consumer data company Statista’s July 22, 2021 statistical article, Size of the sex toy market worldwide from 2019 to 2026. That growth rate doesn’t necessarily mean that sex toys can’t cause injuries. That’s the conclusion drawn by Dr. Dressler.
“The Consumer Product Safety Commission, a U.S. regulatory agency, oversees sales of pleasure toys, but doesn’t require that those toys be tested for safety,” she says. “My book helps fill that gap by showing older adults how to find sex toys that use nonporous body-safe materials such as medical-grade silicone, ABS plastic, and medical-grade stainless steel.”
In her book, Sex Toys: Putting the BOOM back in boomers, Dr. Dressler recommends specific body-safe vibrators and prostate massagers for baby boomers, women and men born between 1946 and 1964. “I wrote my book for these older adults because I’ve learned that they are still interested in sex, and they can use pleasure toys to overcome age-related sexual problems and achieve satisfying orgasms,” she says.
