Dr. Jeff Williams has recently been awarded the designation of Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Professionals (DABFP). A DABFP member has specialization and extensive postdoctoral education in dealing with the relation and application of chiropractic facts to legal problems. The term forensic chiropractor refers to the chiropractic professional who performs an orderly analysis, investigation, inquiry, test, inspection, and examination in an attempt to obtain the truth and from which to make an expert opinion.
Each year thousands of attorneys, insurers, and self-insurers are involved in the litigation of Workers’ Compensation, personal injury, social security disability, long-term disability and short term disability cases. In many of these cases, chiropractors can and do play a significant role. Being involved in legal cases can be intellectually stimulating and rewarding in other ways as well.
A forensic chiropractic examination would refer to that part of the chiropractic professional’s practice that is carried out to provide an expert chiropractic opinion. The basic premise is that forensic chiropractic examiners are first and foremost teachers. The certified forensic examiner is the primary influence in instructing patients; special investigative units; public advocates; universities; and medical and legal organizations in the wide-ranging techniques that fall within the forensic chiropractic science category.
Forensic chiropractors do not “win” or “lose” cases. Forensic chiropractors conducting examination seek only the truth and conduct evaluations, examinations and inquiries, and report the true results of their findings in an unbiased and objective manner.
Forensic chiropractic methods and criteria must be objective and bench-marking results need to be repeatable. Forensic chiropractic examination protocols, algorithms, and techniques should be comprehensive, but not overly complicated. The methods and results must be understandable to the requesting agencies for the judicial process.
The National Board of Forensic Chiropractors (NBOFC) was created to promote competency in the chiropractic professional’s ability to perform excellent independent forensic exams; forensic chiropractic document management; forensic chiropractic peer or diagnostic review; forensic chiropractic review of diagnostic procedures; evaluation for work functional capacities; impairment rating; scientific peer review of literature; standards of care analysis; investigation of suspicious medical claims; and to be state and federally recognized as forensic expert witnesses.
A provider seeking to qualify as a Chiropractic Forensic Professional, one must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 300 postgraduate hours (or 100 hours if the candidate is already a Diplomate of the International Academy of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine) in prescribed educational areas and successfully pass the written forensic examination as well as an in-person interview.
Dr. Jeff Williams owns and operates Creek Stone Integrated Medical clinic in Amarillo, TX where services are offered such as medical services, IV Therapy, Platelet-rich Plasma, hormone balancing, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, exercise/rehabilitation, as well as a day spa branch of the facility.
In addition to achieving Diplomate designation in Forensics, Dr. Williams also completed his Fellowship training and was Board-Certified by the International Academy of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine in 2019 and is the Department Coordinator of Scientific Affairs for the Texas Chiropractic Association in Austin, TX.
