Hammes Company, the nation’s leading healthcare developer as ranked by Modern Healthcare’s Construction and Design Survey, celebrated the groundbreaking of the Virginia Hospital Center (VHC) expansion project on October 22. The expansion will take place in phases, first with the construction of a new 1,700-car parking garage followed by the hospital’s new 250,000-square foot, seven-story outpatient center on its Edison Street site, just north of its current campus.

Hammes Company was first engaged by VHC to complete a facility master plan to guide the hospital’s growth and expansion strategy. Hammes Company was subsequently engaged through a competitive process to provide project management services for the expansion, which includes advising on all aspects of the design, construction and occupancy planning for the new facility. The architect for the project is HDR and the construction manager is Skanska USA Building.

“The Hammes Company team has worked alongside Virginia Hospital Center and Arlington County officials since the early stages of this project to ensure a thoughtful expansion strategy was in place to best serve the hospital’s growing population well into the future,” said Michael Killian, vice president of Hammes Company Healthcare. “The groundbreaking is an exciting milestone as we move toward the construction phase of the project.”

“This will be the most significant expansion of Virginia Hospital Center’s facilities in more than 20 years,” said Charles Fletcher, Virginia Hospital Center’s vice president of support services. “We have an outstanding team in place to help us complete this transformative project over the next three years.”
