Shoreline Biome, a microbiome research company that develops tools for characterizing microbiome populations down to the strain level, was recently awarded a new patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The patent, U.S. Patent 10,894,990, was awarded January 19, 2021, for a “High Throughput Method For Identification and Sequencing of Unknown Microbial and Eukaryotic Genomes from Complex Mixtures.”
The patent protects the bacterial identification method, utilizing the novel 16S-ITS-23S amplicon, found in Shoreline Biome’s flagship StrainID kits. StrainID kits provide a fast, easy-to-use method for amplicon-based microbial strain identification on the PacBio Sequel long read next generation sequencing platform.
“This patent solidifies a clear position for Shoreline Biome as a leader in providing strain level resolution microbiome analysis kits and software,” said Patrick O’Neill, Managing Director at Connecticut Innovations. “We look forward to the company leveraging this patent along with their other intellectual property to provide solutions that translate complex microbiome NGS data sets into clear and actionable answers for the healthcare industry.”
The patent raises Shoreline Biome’s patent portfolio to 2 issued patents. The first granted patent protects the novel and quick lysis method used in all Shoreline Complete kits and ensures that all bacteria, even difficult to lyse Firmicutes, are efficiently lysed while maintaining the integrity and high molecular weight of the genomic DNA in all sample types.
“Patents like this one reinforce Shoreline Biome’s position as a leader in solutions that enable microbiome research,” said Thomas Jarvie, Ph.D., Shoreline Biome’s Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our customers rely on us to deliver innovative products for microbiome characterization down to the strain level. We’re proud to continue that important work.”
Characterizing the human microbiome and analyzing its role in human health and disease are priority goals for researchers around the world. Shoreline Biome accelerates breakthroughs in microbiome research by developing transformative discovery tools that characterize microbiome populations down to the strain level. With Shoreline Biome products, all it takes is three easy steps: lyse, purify, and amplify. Shoreline Biome’s easy-to-use companion analysis software and comprehensive reference database enables straightforward strain-level identification and quantitation of all bacteria in the sample.
