“Time is brain and by offering this high level of care at Queen of the Valley Hospital allows stroke victims to receive emergency care far sooner instead of ambulance transport to a distant facility elsewhere,” said Emanate Health CEO Robert H. Curry.

Emanate Health Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina has received certification from DNV-GL Healthcare as a Primary Plus Stroke Center (PSC+), reflecting a high level of competence for treatment of complex and serious stroke events. DNV-GL is one of the two most prestigious stroke care certification entities in the country.
The PSC+ Program Certification includes all the requirements of the Primary Stroke Program (PSC) with the addition of thrombectomy capabilities, medical staff and metric requirements that are in a comprehensive stroke program. A thrombectomy is an interventional procedure for the removal of a blood clot from an artery or vessel.
“This designation demonstrates Emanate Health’s commitment to provide stroke victims in the San Gabriel Valley with the best possible care in their immediate community,” said Emanate Health CEO Robert H. Curry. “Time is brain and by offering this high level of care at Queen of the Valley Hospital allows stroke victims to receive emergency care far sooner instead of ambulance transport to a distant facility elsewhere.”
According to the American Stroke Association, about 795,000 Americans each year suffer a new or recurrent stroke. That means, on average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Stroke kills more than 137,000 people a year and is one of the leading causes of death. On average, every four minutes someone dies of stroke and is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. Because stroke affects blood flow to the brain, response time and immediate treatment is crucial to limiting the extent of long-term damage.
DNV-GL’s new stroke care certification is for organizations that meet the requirements of the primary stroke program and are fully thrombectomy capable but cannot quite meet the Comprehensive Stroke Center requirements due to reasons such as volume requirements or capability to provide full services, as required.
Queen of Valley Hospital received a rigorous on-site review in October 2020 to determine if it complied with stroke-care standards and requirements established by DNV-GL Healthcare. This certification from DNV-GL validates the hospital stroke program at the highest level of quality and capability to deliver optimal patient outcomes and safety.
“We’re grateful for this certification because it’s a critical step on our road for Emanate Health to become a Comprehensive Stroke Center and we’re confident that we’ll achieve this designation soon,” Curry said.
Queen of the Valley Hospital is working to become a Comprehensive Stroke Center by demonstrating that it has the highest level of infrastructure, imaging capabilities, specially trained neurology specialist and staff ready at all times to treat complex strokes and provide specialized treatment options including medications and neuro-intervention procedures available 24/7.
