“Although co-morbidities are a factor, we know there are gaps in knowledge, education and practice when it comes to managing the needs of the African American community during this time,” says Kenneth R Alleyne, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and chair of Connecticut Health Foundation Board.

COVID-19 has revealed several things about the U.S. health and medical industry. Among them is the lack of response and empathy for people of color, specifically African Americans. Already at higher risks due to pre-existing conditions, the Black community requires a unique and informed response from medical professionals to address the specific needs of those who contract Coronavirus. Announcing today, CE Health Interactive (CEHI), a leading provider of cutting-edge medical educational programs launches a certified educational video to support medical professionals servicing the African American community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The educational video is accredited by the Postgraduate Institute for Medicine(PIM).
According to a National Urban League study, based on data from John Hopkins University, Black Americans are twice as likely to die from COVID-19 related illness than white Americans. With an infection rate of 62 for every 10,000 people, Black Americans are three times as likely to be infected with the virus than their white counterparts.
“Although co-morbidities are a factor,” says Kenneth R Alleyne, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and chair of Connecticut Health Foundation Board. “We know that there are gaps in knowledge, education and practice when it comes to managing the needs of the African American community during this time as it relates to the pandemic. Current treatment options focus on addressing symptomatology. We believe a physician-led program may be beneficial for capturing a larger audience of HCPs. The provision of newer methods for implementing diagnostic and treatment options into the clinicians armamentarium for addressing the symptom and disease progression of COVID-19, as well as the morbidity and mortality rates of Black Americans, are tantamount to achieving improved outcomes.”
“We will be able to use our award-winning MedXchange Live Studio platform to create and feature impactful faculty didactic presentations,” said Calvin L. Butts Jr., board member, CE Health Interactive. “In addition, we will use our platform to moderate panel discussions that will allow for engaging conversation between clinicians and clinical experts.”
In addition to Alleyne, the panel discussion will be led by Reginald Eadie, president and CEO, Trinity Health of New England, and Cheryl R. Whitaker, MD, MPH, FACP, president, Institute of Medicine Chicago and CEO, NextLevel Health.
Topics will include:
- Meeting the medical needs of African American patients with COVID-19
- Data limitations on COVID-19 and African American patients
- Meeting the social determinants of Health needs of At-Risk African American Patients during the Pandemic
