Mark S. Roisman, DMD has always embraced state-of-the-art technology in his Westport, CT dental practice. When the COVID-19 pandemic upended standard practices at dentists’ offices across the world, Dr. Roisman pored over the latest infection control research and implemented new protocols to keep his patients safe whenever they visit for dental care.
“We’ve been doing our utmost to minimize any risk to our patients, most significantly with the basics, including level 3 masks on top of N95 masks and underneath full-coverage face shields. Most importantly, every patient gets thoroughly screened. Our protocol includes communicating by text with patients before they enter the office to avoid any cross-over in our waiting room. We have also contracted with a uniform service to provide us with enough surgical gowns so that we can change between patients (sometimes several times for the same patient),” Dr. Roisman says.
Dr. Roisman continues, “Making crowns in a single visit enables us to minimize the number of visits a patient may need, and digital impressions shorten appointments and can minimize intraoral procedures. These shorter visits and procedures minimize exposure which minimizes risk.”
As Dr. Roisman explains, “We must be doing a lot right — we’ve been reopened since May 20th in one of the highest risk professional environments relating to COVID without a single incident.”
At Dr. Roisman’s practice, tried-and-true infection control measures like N95 masks, face shields, gown changes, surface disinfection, gloves, and hand sanitizer are being combined with advanced air purification technology and the Nu-Bird evacuation system.
The Nu-Bird evacuation system addresses one of the most pressing concerns for dental practices during the COVID-19 pandemic—the aerosols produced during many standard dental procedures. Even a routine dental cleaning performed with ultrasonic tools can produce a fine mist of aerosols that can linger in the air and be inhaled by dentists, staff, and subsequent patients, potentially infecting them with coronavirus.
Nu-Bird works by suctioning aerosols during procedures, greatly reducing the amount released into the room. When combined with disinfecting rinses prior to treatment and air purification, the risk of infection is minimized.
In addition to using advanced infection control technology in his dental practice. Dr. Roisman was one of the first dentists in Connecticut to provide digital radiography to his patients and also to use the iTero digital impression scanner to design crown and bridge restorations. Patients in Westport appreciate being able to get state-of-the-art treatments from their hometown dentist.
