The US-based American International School System is fighting to continue their mission to help the most vulnerable communities in Pakistan struggling during the pandemic. With the Covid-19 pandemic upending daily life, the amount of people in need grows every day.
The American International School System (AISS) is a private coeducational school, based on American educational methodologies, values and culture and is located in Lahore, Pakistan. Due to the continuation of Covid-19 cases, AISS is navigating financial hardship and uncertainty while closed and inoperable. The staff at AISS are working closely with Pakistani communities to support the needs of vulnerable populations as the global pandemic continues to spread, by shifting their day-to-day operations of the school, doubling down on work and discussing solutions to continue educating and helping children in Pakistan.
The Covid-19 pandemic has caused devastating rise in unemployment, leading to a high demand for food and other necessities. Expanding beyond its educational services, the school has been providing and distributing food to a growing number of residents who are going hungry. Under the leadership of its Vice President, Ali Naqvi, AISS has traveled around Lahore, donating food to local communities and nearby families for free. For citizens who can not afford medical treatment, the school is also providing health services, such as antibiotics and hydroxychloroquine.
“The Covid-19 pandemic is impacting every community in Pakistan. Local families and communities are experiencing high levels of unemployment, poor health and hunger. We donate food and provide health services to support hundreds of local families struggling during the pandemic on a periodic basis. This experience is just one example of what our foundation is truly about,” co-founder Dr. Munr Kazmir said.
Approximately 2000 students attend each AISS location and about 70 percent are offered scholarships or financial aid. As the international crisis increases poverty levels in Pakistan, AISS will be issuing a larger amount of financial support to aid financially burdened students. A Lahore native, Naqvi grew up a witness to the disadvantages and struggles a majority of the nation faced due to the absence of quality education and lack of opportunity. He has dedicated his personal mission to ensure every child in Pakistan has the opportunity to go to school and build their future.
AISS intends to connect and unite students of different faiths and financial backgrounds, and provides a world class education for children in Pakistan, giving them an opportunity to gain access to higher education institutions in the United States. The school promotes American and democratic ideals at the earliest stages of Pakistani youth’s educational life, a key role in defining Pakistan’s future in the region. AISS started operating in 2007 when they opened the Premier American School, and has since expanded through five satellite Premier Grammar School locations throughout the city of Lahore and Kāmoke.
Dr. Munr Kazmir and his co-founder, John Allison, share this sentiment and together founded the AISS flagship campus in Lahore, the most modern state-of-the-art school in the history of Pakistan. Pakistani Born Munr Kazmir has led a lifetime of leadership as a CEO, entrepreneur, physician and philanthropist in the healthcare and education industries. He is a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, Dankook University honorary doctorate degree in political science, is Goodwill Ambassador to the Bektashian community and was formerly a part of the White House Fellowship program.
Dr. Kazmir has strong bipartisan relationships with a myriad of congressional leaders in the United States, as well as other major political figures internationally. He has received two humanitarian awards and widespread recognition for his commitment to supporting children’s causes and organizations throughout the world.
