Dr. James C. Loden, The First Surgeon to Implant Durysta in a Glaucoma Patient in Tennesee

Implanting Durysta on the patient’s affected eye can reduce eye pressure quickly and safely and is a procedure that can be done right in our offices in under one minute.

Loden Vision Centers, a leading comprehensive ophthalmology company with 5 locations across the greater Nashville and surrounding areas, has successfully completed a pioneering procedure to treat glaucoma.

Loden Vision Centers’ Founder and Medical Director, James C. Loden, MD, became the first eye surgeon in the state of Tennessee to utilize a new FDA-approved treatment option to address a patient’s open-angle glaucoma. Dr. Loden used a new implant called Durysta, which reduces intraocular pressure in the eye which is critical to maintaining a patient’s vision.

Matthew Pierre, CEO of Loden Vision Centers, was present during the procedure and noted, “Dr. Loden and our surgeons continue to serve as pioneers in the field of Ophthalmology. Providing innovative and life changing solutions for our patients continues Loden Vision Center’s rich history and tradition pioneering eye excellence across Tennessee.”

“High ocular pressure associated with glaucoma is a health concern that can significantly impact vision and in some cases eye comfort,” said Dr. Loden, of Loden Vision Centers. “Implanting Durysta on the patient’s affected eye can reduce eye pressure quickly and safely and is a procedure that can be done right in our offices in under one minute.” Durysta then gently releases needed medicine into the eye over a period of time, reducing the pressure in the eye. In some cases, prescription eye drops can even be discontinued.

Glaucoma, a progressive disease of the eye, is marked by increased levels of pressure in the eyes, and can lead to irreversible vision loss or blindness. To treat and prevent damage to the nerve of the eye, the eye pressure must be lowered. Up until now, doctors’ first line of care has typically been the use of drops on the eye that are absorbed and lower the eye pressure. However, for patients who have difficulty using eye drops or remembering to use them consistently, Durysta is an option that delivers the medicine directly to the patient’s affected eye.

The Durysta procedure can be done in one office visit and includes a return follow up visit to measure the progress of the eye.

“Millions of people are living with glaucoma every day and more treatments are needed to help them manage this disease without the cost and hassle of prescription eye drops every day for the rest of their life,” said Dr. Loden, of Loden Vision Centers. “We at Loden Vision Centers are proud to be able to offer this innovative, state-of-the-art treatment.”

At Loden Vision Centers, our experienced physicians will go over your glaucoma options with you to find the best course of treatment and find out if Durysta is the right option for you. Even if Durysta isn’t right for you, it is important to have your glaucoma treated and your eyes checked regularly by experienced medical professionals, such as those at Loden Vision Centers.
