A group of leading AI researchers based in San Francisco has launched “The New Normal: AI Solutions for Post-Pandemic America,” a new company dedicated to using artificial intelligence to promote public health during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company uses deep learning technology to help maintain social distancing, ensure that people are wearing face coverings as required and to create “heat maps” that show areas of high pedestrian traffic flow.

“We started the company because, across the country, we’ve seen state and local governments — and well as businesses — struggle to maintain social distancing and enforce rules requiring face coverings,” said CEO Steven Piekarczyk.

The company’s deep-learning technology allows rapid development of new applications, such as the ones needed to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“All of these applications are perfectly suited for AI,” explained the group’s Chief Scientist, Daniel Tapias, “because they are based on simple pattern matching in video and thermal imaging.”

The company has technology ready to deploy in the following areas:


  • Maintaining social distancing by dispatching personnel to areas where people are too close to each other.

  • Monitoring headcount of spaces with limited capacity.

  • Ensuring that people are wearing face coverings in areas they are required.

For all of these applications, the system can be set up with dedicated cameras—or it can interface with existing surveillance equipment, from manufacturers such as Genetec and Milestone.

The system is effective in all well-lit spaces, interior and exterior.

Personnel can be notified via text message, or using audible or visual signals.

The platform also creates “heat maps” based on people’s movement patterns and allows the creation of predictive models so that specific actions can be taken to reduce/optimize the flow of people.

All of these applications share a single mission: to keep people healthy by preventing viral spread in a pandemic.
