New York City dentist Dr. Shaun Massiah was recently featured in Barron’s Back to Business video series to share how the COVID-19 crisis affected his practice.
The Barron’s series highlights the stories of New York businesses and the pivots they have had to make to adjust to the “new normal” required by the current global pandemic. While the impacts of COVID-19 are undeniable, each video shares the ways in which the crisis has given businesses opportunities for change and innovation.
As the coronavirus crippled New York, dental practices were limited to providing emergency care only in order to slow viral spread. With the state beginning to open up again, dentists too have been allowed to go back to work—albeit with a number of new precautions in place to protect patients and staff. In his feature in Barron’s, Dr. Massiah shares how he and his team handled the nearly three-month shutdown of Smiles on the Upper Westside and also his plans for the practice moving forward.
Although the COVID-19 shutdown had the potential to be devastating to his business, Dr. Massiah used the unexpected time off to bolster his business, reading books and articles, attending webinars, and sourcing new technology to better serve his patients. As a job creator, one of his primary concerns was ensuring that he could continue to pay his entire team through the shutdown; Dr. Massiah discusses how he accomplished this with the help of a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan.
