With government legislation stating that hospitality and retail businesses cannot open unless they incorporate social distancing and ensure all members of staff wear either a mask or visor, there has been a drastic increase in demand for PPE. However, with such fast demand, companies are having to react quickly, which has led to a spike in single-use plastic products being produced.
Due to the fear of transmission of COVID-19, there has been a big push to make everything disposable, meaning many masks are single use only before they are disposed of, leaving millions of used masks filling up landfills. 13 million tonnes of plastic already ends up in the ocean every year and there are growing concerns that the pandemic could further increase this figure. Both the retail and hospitality sectors already use huge amounts of single-use plastic, with utensils, packaging, cups and containers and single-use masks would only further contribute to the pile.
As experts in their field, 2KR have designed a visor that will keep the public safe without damaging the environment. Their visors are designed for multiple use, so after each wear they can be cleaned and disinfected to be used again, avoiding excessive waste. Once they have reached their final use, the plastic used is completely recyclable so it will never end up in a landfill site.
“We wanted to give people protection, but we didn’t want it to come at the cost of the environment. We specifically designed our visors to be reusable and recyclable to minimise plastic pollution as much as possible.
Currently, people are only considering the short-term solutions and not thinking about the long-term consequences,” says 2KR CEO, Kenneth Caruana.
Using masks and visors is still absolutely essential to reducing the spread of the virus. Unlike masks, visors are considered to be more effective covering for the entire face including the eyes, minimising the chance of infection. Visors are also becoming a preferred choice within customer facing positions as they give full visibility of a person’s face, so staff can still give warm welcomes with smiles or just have a good old chat, continuing to make shopping and dining enjoyable experiences. Visors are also preferred for those hard of hearing who may rely on lip reading to communicate.
