Since I have hearing loss, I have always provided a unique perspective on life, yet I have never let that stop me from doing what I love, pursuing excellence at all times, and working beyond my limits.

The HearStrong Foundation and the NFL Players Association’s Professional Athletes Foundation launched the fourth annual scholarship program for student athletes with hearing loss. Through the program, six students received $1,000 to go toward their higher education.

The HearStrong Foundation and the NFLPA have been tackling issues surrounding hearing loss together for years. A not-for-profit organization dedicated to recognizing remarkable adults and children with hearing loss, HearStrong partners with the NFLPA to empower and inspire others. In fact, many former professional athletes have joined the cause as HearStrong Ambassadors throughout the years.

The scholarship program was born in 2016 in an effort to inspire a new generation of athletes who have overcome challenges surrounding their hearing loss. The program is open to high school juniors through college sophomores who have played at least one year of high school varsity sports and are attending – or have plans to attend – a college or university.

Casey King was one of the six recipients of this year’s scholarship when she was entering her sophomore year in college at Capital University. Casey says,

“Since I have hearing loss, I have always provided a unique perspective on life, yet I have never let that stop me from doing what I love, pursuing excellence at all times, and working beyond my limits.”

Jacob Hartman, another recipient entering his freshmen year at Glenville State College, has also demonstrated excellence in all areas of his academics and athletics.

“I set the example of how an athlete should act on and off the field and hope that those that watched will continue to follow me and will set the bar high for what they want to accomplish,” said Jacob. “You can do anything you want and never let anyone discourage you from it.”
