Parents came with questions and went away with hope because now they know autism is medical and treatable.

One minute it was business as usual, and the next, schools were closed, international travel was restricted, and “social distancing” entered the lexicon. COVID-19 turned the world on its head, and everything ground to a halt. But some information is too important to stay “sheltered in place.”

The AutismOne annual conference went from a physical event to a virtual one in seven weeks, following the time in late March when hotels were closing and conferences were being cancelled. The virtual platform, where the conference opened online and on time, began Wednesday, May 20th.

“We wanted to map as much as possible of the physical conference to its virtual form,” said Ed Arranga, AutismOne’s president and co-founder. “It was important to keep the same ‘look and feel,’” Arranga continued, “to maintain the sense of community and shared experiences, from chatting with friends to attending lectures to joining the yoga classes in the mornings. We had a great team that worked around the clock,” Arranga said, “and the next event will be even better.”

Candyce Estave, AutismOne’s communications director, was delighted about how well the more than 100 lectures went. “We are tremendously pleased,” Estave said, “that attendees were able to get the most up-to-date information from the world’s leading experts. Parents came with questions and went away with hope because now they know autism is medical and treatable.”

An AutismOne 2020 Summit speaker summed it up well when he said the virtual summit had its glitches but was a HUGE success. Ed Arranga agreed: “The autism community needs to keep moving forward. We’ve had the privilege of educating thousands of parents and professionals, but now we have the tools and technology to educate a far greater number, and we will.”
