A new video series from healthcare data curation company Verinovum explores the crucial role that data curation plays for payers and providers combatting COVID-19. The content covers the initial observation that data quality may have let down frontline caregivers and patients, and how to get your data back on track.

Art Wilmes, former principal with Milliman and current Verinovum board member, created this four-part series to share his conviction regarding the value he has found in clean, accurate data throughout a career defined by its use and analysis.

“I firmly believe that clean, curated, high-quality data is the only way for the healthcare industry to move forward and to succeed – not only in terms of coming out on the other side of the COVID-19 crisis, but also in terms of all innovation and growth, from implementing AI to population health management to achieving true value-based care,” says Wilmes. “And I believe Verinovum’s Data Curation as a Service platform is a powerful solution to help transform data into a valuable asset.”

In the first video, released April 20, Wilmes discusses the necessity of accurate data analysis and the ways data curation can help with COVID-19 detection and prevention. “In today’s environment, front-line caregivers and patients rely on trustworthy and timely data. Without curated data, these caregivers and patients are disadvantaged at the time they are most vulnerable,” he says in the video.

The second video, to be released in June, will discuss data quality more broadly, how EHRs alone aren’t enough, and why data curation is vital for healthcare organizations. Other topics planned for the series include data curation as a science, the pitfalls of data lakes, and the need for quality scoring to assess aggregated databases.

“At Verinovum, we believe that clean and curated data is the missing link to help healthcare institutions fulfill their missions. Without it, organizational processes and analytics are rendered ineffective and patient outcomes suffer. If there’s any silver lining to COVID-19, it’s that healthcare innovators are seeking answers to some of the foundational issues in healthcare, including the need for clean data,” says Verinovum CEO Mark McCurry.
