Nurse.org Teams Up with Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners to Honor Nurses This Month

“The Red Sox are excited to host thousands of nurses again at our annual ‘Nurse Night’ with Nurse.org. We look forward to honoring and thanking them for all of the hard work they do on May 17th at Fenway!” – Carl Grider, Sr. Director at the Red Sox

Nurse.org, the largest website and community of nurses online, will host its 7th Annual Red Sox “Nurse Night” at Fenway Park on May 17th, 2023. Over 5,000 New England-area nurses have already secured tickets to the event, surpassing last year’s record attendance.

According to the Red Sox, the annual “Nurse Night” is the #1 theme night in Red Sox history. “The Red Sox are excited to host thousands of nurses again at our annual ‘Nurse Night’ with Nurse.org,” said Carl Grider, Sr. Director at the Red Sox. “We look forward to honoring and thanking them for all of the hard work they do on May 17th at Fenway!”

The pregame ceremony will feature a performance of the national anthem by nurse Kelli Neville, a pediatric nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) for Children in Boston, MA. Kelli won the opportunity to sing from an online audition and vote by the Nurse.org community. She said, “I have always loved honoring our country by performing the anthem at special events and as a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, it would be the ultimate dream come true to do so at Fenway.”

Ten additional nurses, nominated and voted on by the Nurse.org community, will be honored on the field during the pregame ceremony, and one will throw the first pitch. The nurses recognized for their dedication to the nursing profession include:

  • Eileen Ruggieri – Courtyard Nursing Care Center in Medford, MA
  • Jackie Haney – Lawrence General Hospital in Haverhill, MA
  • Jeremy Boucher – Greenwood Center in Warwick, RI
  • Katherine Johnson – Mass General Brigham Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, MA
  • Laura Creed – Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA

  • Noelle Sullivan – Boston Veteran’s Affairs Healthcare System in Boston, MA
  • Samantha Peck Dionne – Southcoast Behavioral Health in Dartmouth, MA

“I look forward to this event every year,” said Nurse Alice Benjamin, APRN, MSN, ACNS-BC, FNP-B, CCRN, CEN, CV-BC, Chief Nursing Officer and Correspondent for Nurse.org, and the host of the award-winning “Ask Nurse Alice” podcast. “I can’t wait to meet all of these amazing nurses. Go Red Sox!” Nurse Alice will host the pregame ceremony and looks forward to meeting nurses on the main concourse during the game for photos and other giveaways.

Nurse.org is also hosting its first “Nurse Night” at T-Mobile Park with the Seattle Mariners on May 8th. Kelli Camp, a nurse anesthetist in rural Washington, will throw the first pitch, and Matt Dustin, a charge nurse at Tacoma General Hospital, will catch.

May is National Aging Life Care™ Month, Aging Life Care Association® Offering Free Info Sessions

blue and green gradient background with the text "Ask an Aging Life Care Manager®, a small group conversation. Free during Aging Life Care™ Month - May 2023. Learn more at aginglifecare.org"

Throughout May 2023, the Aging Life Care Association® is offering FREE “Ask an Aging Life Care Manager®” sessions. Register at aginglifecare.org

Families and caregivers are facing more pressure and challenges. We want people to know that help is available.

With Americans living longer than ever before, many are overwhelmed by the aging journey. The Aging Life Care Association® (ALCA) is piloting a new means of support for family caregivers or anyone expecting to be a “solo ager.” Every Friday in May, ALCA will hold free thirty-minute sessions where attendees can ask experts questions about aging and planning for care. Attendees must register for the events as space is very limited to allow for more personal attention. To learn more and register, visit aginglifecare.org.

Escalating costs of long-term or specialized care combined with the COVID-19 pandemic have increased demands on multi-generational caregivers. Additionally, increasing numbers of people are opting to “age solo” or live far from their children or next of kin. Experts at the Aging Life Care Association® warn that not discussing and planning for aging may increase financial burdens and stress for everyone involved.

“Often, family caregivers feel the brunt of stress in having to take extra time off work or away from their own children,” says Anne Sansevero, President of ALCA. “Many do so enthusiastically, but without knowing the ins and outs of what their loved one needs or how to advocate for them, they become overwhelmed.”

Twelve years ago, ALCA launched National Aging Life Care™ Month to raise awareness of a solution for families and caregivers supporting aging loved ones – Aging Life Care Managers®. This May, to celebrate Aging Life Care™ Month, ALCA is sponsoring “Ask an Aging Life Care Manager” – a virtual, thirty-minute small-group discussion with an Aging Life Care Manager.

There will be two sessions every Friday, where attendees can speak directly with an Aging Life Care Manager® and get guidance for their situation. The sessions are free, in recognition of Aging Life Care™ Month.

ALCA CEO Julie Wagner hopes these “Ask an Aging Life Care Manager” conversations will increase awareness of the Aging Life Care™ field, “Families and caregivers are facing more pressure and challenges. We want people to know that help is available.”

Aging Life Care Managers offer a holistic, client-centered approach to caring for older adults, dependent adults, and others facing ongoing health challenges. Sometimes called geriatric care managers, Aging Life Care Managers are strategic planners with key knowledge in crisis intervention, housing, health and disability, advocacy, family legal needs, and financial and local resources.

Registration for the Ask a Care Manager session is open now and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

5 Ways to Manage Mental Health with a Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Account

Understanding how FSA and HSA funds can be used to pay for mental health services and products is a small but important step to improving mental wellbeing for people across the country.

According to recent reports, over 50 million Americans are currently experiencing mental illness and 23% of adults say they have not received care for these needs due to cost. As Mental Health Month begins, it’s important for consumers to understand that flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs) can bridge the gap between health plan benefits and mental health needs. As such, Health-E Commerce, parent brand to online marketplaces FSAstore.com and HSAstore.com, is offering the following tips for understanding FSA and HSA eligibility and supporting mental health for individuals and families.

  • Don’t forgo clinical services. If your health plan does not provide coverage for mental health services or prescriptions used to treat mental health conditions, you can use an FSA or HSA to pay for those expenses. Use an online eligibility list to explore related services. If you have an FSA/HSA debit card, you can use that at point of service to pay for these expenses, or submit the expenses to your FSA/HSA administrator for reimbursement.
  • Take steps to manage anxiety. Anxiety can strike anytime, anywhere. Drug-free approaches like the CalmiGo Smart Calming Companion can help ease feelings of distress and anxiousness by helping users calm their breathing and stimulate the senses, making it easier to focus on maintaining a calm, balanced state.
  • Improve sleep. Sleep can be elusive for people with mental health challenges. Unfortunately, lack of sleep often exacerbates these conditions. An FSA or HSA can be used to purchase over-the-counter sleep aids, as well as drug-free options like the Bed Buddy at Home Relaxation Mask, which is designed to ease tension caused by stress, headaches, or sinus pain. Imbued with essential oils, this item can be heated or chilled.
  • Explore complementary approaches. Acupuncture is a frequently requested expense for FSA and HSA users, and while many health plans do not cover this service, an FSA or HSA will. It’s always good to check with your account administrator before scheduling services to be sure you do not need a Letter of Medical Necessity. In addition to acupuncture services, products like the Kanjo Acupressure Ear Seeds and Memory Foam Acupressure Mat can reduce pain and stress throughout the body and improve overall wellbeing.
  • Try pressure therapy. Weighted blankets (a form of pressure therapy) have emerged in recent years as a way to relieve anxiety, stress, and insomnia – all of which can coexist for people with mental health conditions. An FSA or HSA can be used to purchase products like the Sharper Image Calming Heat Massaging Weighted Heating Pad, combining the benefits of pressure therapy with calming heat and vibrations.

“Our mission at Health-E Commerce is to simplify tax-free health accounts and to help millions of individuals and families get more from their health benefits, and that includes awareness for mental health eligibility,” said Preston Farrington, CEO, Health-E Commerce. “Understanding how FSA and HSA funds can be used to pay for mental health services and products is a small but important step to improving mental wellbeing for people across the country.”

Ideal Option Releases 2022 Alaska Patient Outcomes Report to Show Effectiveness of Medication-Assisted Treatment for Fentanyl, Heroin, Methamphetamine and Cocaine

Ideal Option, a national leader in outpatient medication-assisted treatment for addiction to opioids and other substances, has released its 2022 Annual Patient Outcomes Report for patients living in Alaska.

This report contains an aggregated view of patients’ geographic and demographic characteristics, their stage and duration of care, adherence to medication and their substance use over time based on lab specimens collected during 2022 from more than 700 patients.

The data show the effectiveness of treating addiction with FDA-approved medications combined with regular lab testing to verify medication adherence, create accountability and ensure patient safety.

Among Alaska patients who remained in treatment from initiation to the maintenance stage of care during 2022, the report shows:

  • 94% less total opioid use
  • 97% less fentanyl use
  • 97% less heroin use
  • 90% less methamphetamine use
  • 82% less cocaine use

The report also reveals synthetic drug use continuing to rise among enrolling patients in 2022, particularly fentanyl. Fentanyl is regularly mixed with other illicit drugs to make them more addictive, often without the user knowing.

“Polysubstance use disorder is now the most common diagnosis at Ideal Option,” said Tim Kilgallon, CEO at Ideal Option. “In 2022, 66% of all Alaska patients tested positive for two or more substances at enrollment, and 46% tested positive for three or more substances.”

The data corroborate state reports of the increasingly prevalent role that fentanyl plays in the substance use epidemic. According to the Alaska Department of Health, in 2021, overdose deaths involving fentanyl increased by 150% from 2020.

In addition, overdose deaths involving methamphetamine increased by 148%, and 58% of all overdose deaths that occurred in Alaska between 2017-2021 involved drugs from more than one narcotic, sedative, or psychotropic category. Ideal Option data show that standard treatment for opioid use disorder dramatically reduces the use of stimulants in patients who test positive for both.
