FDA green-lights bionic pancreas studied at UT Health Science Center San Antonio, University Health

“We don’t want to call this a pump. It is more. It is AI for insulin delivery.” —Jane Lynch, MD, of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio

While it won’t cure children of type 1 diabetes, the “bionic pancreas,” an artificial intelligence-powered system cleared May 19 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, will relieve youth and their parents of constant worries over estimating insulin doses and carb intake from food.

“We don’t want to call this a pump. It is more. It is AI for insulin delivery,” said Jane Lynch, MD, professor of pediatric endocrinology and diabetes at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Lynch, faculty in the health science center’s Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, treats children affected by type 1 diabetes at University Health’s Texas Diabetes Institute on San Antonio’s West Side.

One of few sites that studied the system in children

The pediatric endocrinology team at the University Health Texas Diabetes Institute was one of the first vanguard groups of researchers to study the bionic pancreas during a clinical trial reported in the New England Journal of Medicine in October 2022. This experience with the device’s implementation in patients allows the team to be the first in South and Central Texas to offer it to more children.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to launch the bionic pancreas in San Antonio,” said Rabab Jafri, MD, pediatric endocrinology and diabetes specialist in the Long School of Medicine and at University Health. “This is a huge step forward for young people in the management of type 1 diabetes.”

510(k) premarket clearance pathway

The FDA reviewed the bionic pancreas and associated AI software through the 510(k) premarket clearance pathway. The system is cleared for people 6 years of age and older who have type 1 diabetes.

In a press release, Jeff Shuren, MD, JD, director of FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said the May 19 clearance “will provide the type 1 diabetes community with additional options and flexibilities for diabetes management and may help to broaden the reach of automated insulin dosing technology.”

Simpler way to keep track

The system, made by a Massachusetts medical technology company, requires only the input of the wearer’s body weight to get started. The automated insulin-delivery system is paired with a continuous glucose monitoring system. At mealtimes, users estimate their carbohydrate intake simply as small, medium or large.

“Instead of having preset insulin dosing, this device enables AI algorithms to learn a patient’s insulin requirements,” Lynch said. “It is unique and innovative.”

Stress of constant vigilance

In people with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not make insulin, the hormone that regulates blood glucose. The result is a lifestyle of monitoring glucose levels each day and taking insulin via injections or through an insulin pen or pump. A healthy diet and exercise are also necessary for glucose control.

“At the Texas Diabetes Institute on Zarzamora Street, we care for predominantly Hispanic families, and we see the parents’ struggles to maintain their children’s sugars,” said Ruby Favela-Prezas, family nurse practitioner in the pediatric endocrinology practice. “Some youths adjust well, but others really struggle. For every young person with type 1 diabetes, the constant management that is required can be very stressful, so to have a system that is automatic in ensuring the children’s safety and well-being through regulated glucose levels is truly a dream come true.”

Size of a cell phone

The device uses an attached plastic infusion set that communicates with a sensor to provide insulin in response to continuous blood sugar patterns. The device is the size of a cell phone and is typically worn on the belt.

“The AI algorithm adjusts to the individual needs of each user,” Lynch said. “It is revolutionary, and our team is delighted to share this technology to reduce the daily burden of care for our patient who have type 1 diabetes here in our city and in South and Central Texas.”

Litmus Health Cofounder and Chief Scientific Officer Appointed as Chairman of the Clinical Research Data Sharing Alliance

Since its founding in 2021, the CRDSA has been focused on serving the clinical data sharing ecosystem by addressing the challenges in the life sciences data sharing ecosystem.

Litmus Health, the research-ready infrastructure platform for wearables and sensor data, today announced that Cofounder and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Samuel Volchenboum has been appointed as chairman of the Clinical Research Data Sharing Alliance (CRDSA). In his role, Dr. Volchenboum will lead the organization’s board of directors in maximizing the strategic impact of the organization in its push to accelerate drug discovery through the use of high-quality data in the clinical trials process.

Since its founding in 2021, the CRDSA has been focused on serving the clinical data sharing ecosystem by addressing the challenges in the life sciences data sharing ecosystem. Some of the biggest issues are rooted in inconsistent data standards and lack of best practices. With an unprecedented amount of data available to clinical researchers — including relatively new data sources like wearables and sensors — addressing these challenges has never been more pressing. The growing clinical trial software market alone speaks to the tremendous opportunity that lies in maximizing the usability and interoperability of trial data.

“The advancements in data collection and applications over the past decade have presented a tremendous opportunity to rapidly accelerate drug discovery, but there are critical challenges that must be addressed to make the most of these advancements,” said Dr. Volchenboum. “The lack of current data best practices — especially in regards to standards and sharing — means that valuable life-saving insights are locked away in data that is difficult or impossible to use. The CRDSA is addressing these problems head-on by bringing together the best minds from the public and private sectors to develop actionable solutions. I am honored to be serving as chairperson of the organization’s board of directors.”

In addition to serving as Cofounder and Chief Scientific Officer to Litmus Health, Dr. Volchenboum currently serves as Director of Data for the Common Good and their flagship project, the Pediatric Data Commons at the University of Chicago. With his extensive experience in developing clinical research protocols, Dr. Volchenboum is uniquely positioned to lead the CRDSA board and help establish standards for the industry’s future.

Meta Quest 2 Comfort Vue™ System Can be Optimized as a Virtual Travel Platform to Reduce Elderly Social Isolation

“No other current VR/Metaverse platform can provide the functionality features which make the Comfort Vue™ stationary boundary system an ideal virtual travel platform for older adults.”

VRComfort Labs stated the most vulnerable are those who are over the age 65, live alone, in nursing homes or assisted living centers. They may only interact socially with a couple other residents, care takers and an occasional visiting family member. For single seniors and couples who live in retirement communities and may not be as lonely, the virtual travel platform can still provide emotional and mental benefits.

VRComfort Labs further stated there are companies such as MyndVR, Rendever, SilVR Adventures, VivaVita, and Viarama, who address similar issues and have some decent apps and content. VRComfort Labs reviewed current solutions and believes although content can be good, the delivery system is not. Other than MyndVR ,which utilizes HTC Vive Flow glasses, solution providers require the user to strap on a full-size VR headset. One of the biggest complaints about VR headset engagement is the discomfort caused by pressure on the face. For a senior citizen user, the physical discomfort can be even worse.

The VR Comfort Vue™ platform eliminates head motion sickness, head strap discomfort and allows quick and easy headset entry, exit, and re-entry, for taking take momentary immersion breaks. All three are vital functionality features for a senior citizen user to have an enjoyable virtual travel experience.

No other current VR/Metaverse platform can provide the functionality features which make the Comfort Vue™ stationary boundary system an ideal virtual travel platform for older adults. Alternative solutions can involve more expensive VR headsets, yearly subscriptions, and require a health care “tour guide.” The VR Comfort Vue™ platform can be adapted to accept other headsets, but is plug and play with Quest 2 which can use the $9.99 world travel Wander app

Design Agency Wins Three Silver Awards for Excellence in Website Design and Development for Education and Healthcare

Best practices case study for a healthcare website redesign project

Website Design and Development for Healthcare

“This win further strengthens our commitment to design for higher education and healthcare industries.” says Edina Tanovic. “We really enjoy supporting and collaborating with our neighboring University in Berkeley. The win in healthcare also celebrates our dedication to help those who help others.”

For its 2023’s first competitive season, Project6 lands three Silver awards in the website design competition. Two of the three works that delivered them this decisive victory were created by Edina Tanović, Project6 co-founder and Creative Director. “This win further strengthens our commitment to design for higher education and healthcare industries,” says Edina. “We really enjoy supporting and collaborating with our neighboring University in Berkeley. The win in healthcare also celebrates our dedication to help those who help others.” The MUSE Awards is composed of a series of competitions which are organized to honor excellence from various fields. IAA ensures that these competitions are accessible and fair, in order to guarantee recognition only goes to those who truly deserve the accolade.

Website Design for Colleges and Universities

The first award was for the redesign of Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design. The project included: creating a unified brand identity for the college, its departments, and select programs and institutes, creating easy-to-use print collateral templates with the new identity, and Re-envision and rebuild the main CED website, consolidating content from over 15 auxiliary websites.

Award-wining Website Design for Healthcare

The second award was for the Hill Physicians Medical Group website redesign. The redesign focused on simplifying the user experience, updating the design to better connect with the target audience, and to implement a content management system to enable frequent content updates. Learn more about best practices in healthcare website redesign in the case study.

Award-winning UI/UX Design for the Design/Build Construction Industry

The final silver award went to Granite Construction. Granite is one of the largest diversified construction and construction materials companies in the United States as well as a full-suite provider in the transportation, water infrastructure and mineral exploration markets. The website reflects their brand image, and includes interactive infographics showcasing their inclusive diversity data. “Adding a bit of interactivity really engages the user and is a great way to showcase Granite’s inclusivity figures.” – Esten Sesto, Project6 Design President and UI/UX Director.

“The industries have gone through significant changes through the years, yet to have these entrants showcase their ability to adapt and overcome, it is certainly surprising and encouraging to our team in IAA,” Thomas Brandt, spokesperson of IAA elaborated. He continued, “it is humbling to see the level of craft displayed in the submitted works. Our most sincere commendations go out to those behind said works and for setting such a high standard for excellence for all to follow.”

Having a jury composed of industry professionals, IAA was successful in upholding impartiality and enforcing industry-relevant assessment criteria. The jury’s role was solely to identify companies or individuals whose works showcased excellence and pushed their respective industries forward, which they had successfully accomplished.

Other than employing industry-relevant standards in judging entries, impartiality was also enforced with the blind judging method. This meant that entries were evaluated by multiple judges without being compared with other submissions, meaning that each winning work had decisively won with their own merits.

“While the winners continue to reshape and redefine the industries with their continued display of excellence, we should not shy away from the challenge and instead share the vision in solidarity with them,” Thomas said. “IAA remains proud to be able to honor talented individuals while spotlighting their excellence. As they continue to mark the path forward, we should also unleash our boundless possibilities and join in this marvelous endeavor.”

Announcing a New Student Health Video Education and Engagement Solution for College Campuses

Mytonomy Cloud for Student Health Screenshot

By leveraging the power of content streaming coupled with modern, intelligent engagement, we empower students to take control of their health and set a strong foundation for lifelong well-being – Anjali Kataria, CEO and Co-founder

Mytonomy, Inc., a leading enterprise SaaS solution for video-based patient education and engagement, announced today the expansion of Mytonomy Cloud for Healthcare to support student health at college and university campuses across the country at the American College Health Association (ACHA) Annual Meeting 2023. Mytonomy’s content streaming platform is designed to deliver comprehensive health related information tailored to the needs of undergraduate, graduate and professional students in fresh and modern ways.

For the first time, campuses will gain access to the same award-winning, clinically validated healthcare education and engagement capabilities that Mytonomy already provides to America’s top hospitals and healthcare systems.

Mytonomy Cloud for Student Health will address the most frequently asked healthcare questions students have and offer guidance on how to best utilize student health programs at their campus, saving time and delivering a positive experience. The platform provides easily accessible information on a wide range of chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, mental health concerns, STIs, and drug and alcohol safety, in addition to health management and wellness resources. Additionally, Mytonomy’s student health offering will support student athletes, providing guidance on various conditions including preparing for your annual physical, understanding results, managing concussions, falls, sprains and common orthopedic procedures.

“Mytonomy’s expansion to student health is designed to address the evolving needs of university students with a whole-person whole health approach,” said Anjali Kataria, CEO and Co-founder at Mytonomy. “By leveraging the power of content streaming coupled with modern, intelligent engagement, we empower students to take control of their health and set a strong foundation for lifelong well-being. Parents may be reassured that their children have access to medically validated information and support that is already used by top U.S. hospitals and healthcare systems, while campus health teams can save time and continue to focus on providing excellent care.”

Mytonomy Cloud for Student Health leverages the company’s expertise in remote patient engagement and microlearning video content to empower students in actively managing their health and well-being. The platform will accommodate today’s students, many of whom prefer short, engaging video content over written materials. It is user-friendly and accessible on any device, allowing students to understand their medical journey, improve adherence to treatment plans, enhance communication with healthcare teams, and access resources from any location.

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by students with acute and/or chronic conditions, Mytonomy Cloud for Student Health provides a customizable content library geared to addressing the top student health needs, as well as programming on how to best access and use student health services. With this powerful tool, students can better manage their healthcare independently, irrespective of their primary care doctor’s location, and support the student health resources that campuses work so hard to offer.

One of the key features of Mytonomy Cloud for Student Health is its integration with Electronic Health Records (EHRs), allowing seamless sharing of vital health information with students. This integration ensures that students have access to their medical history, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health and healthcare.

“Today’s students may not always know the relevant healthcare questions to ask or know how to utilize services a university provides. However, with Mytonomy Cloud for Student Health universities can foster student success by equipping them with the tools they need to navigate their health independently,” added Sue Wasiolek, VP of Student Health Programs at Mytonomy and former dean of Duke University. “With four decades of experience in higher education, having seen campus challenges up close, I am confident that this platform will help bridge the gap between healthcare and education, promoting a holistic approach to student wellness.”

Prevent Blindness Declares June as Cataract Awareness Month, Providing Educational Resources on Eye Disease that Affects Millions

Prevent Blindness declares June as Cataract Awareness Month to educate the public on the world’s leading cause of blindness.

“Unlike many of the other major eye diseases, such as glaucoma or diabetes-related eye disease, cataracts can be easily and painlessly treated by surgery to remove and replace the eye’s lens, restoring sight for most patients,” said Jeff Todd, Prevent Blindness president and CEO.

Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, according to The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. More than half of all Americans will have cataract by the time they are 80 years old. Prevent Blindness, the nation’s leading nonprofit eye health and safety organization, has once again declared June as Cataract Awareness Month in an effort to provide patients, care partners and professionals with information on topics related to types of cataract, risk factors, symptoms, cataract surgery and available financial assistance resources. The group offers a dedicated web resource at PreventBlindness.org/cataract, and free materials in English and Spanish, such as fact sheets and social media graphics.

Prevent Blindness also offers the “Understanding Cataract” episode of its “Focus on Eye Health Expert Series.” Prevent Blindness president and CEO Jeff Todd discusses cataract and cataract surgery with Albert Cheung, MD, Cataract, Cornea, Anterior Segment Specialist with Virginia Eye Consultants and Assistant Professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Department of Ophthalmology.

Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens that blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye, according to the National Eye Institute.

Although there may be no early symptoms, patients may begin to notice:

  •     cloudy or blurry vision
  •     colors that look faded
  •     difficulty seeing at night
  •     lamps, sunlight or headlights appearing too bright
  •     a halo around lights
  •     seeing double (this sometimes goes away as the cataract gets bigger)
  •     frequent changes to the prescription of eyeglasses or contact lenses

Cataract surgery is one of the most common operations in the United States. An average of 4 million cataract surgeries are performed in this country every year, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). For patients looking for more information, Prevent Blindness offers the dedicated webpage, PreventBlindness.org/cataract-surgery, and the printable “Guide to Cataract Surgery” fact sheet.

If surgery is recommended, the eye surgeon may remove the lens with the cataract and replace it with an intraocular lens (IOL). The eye surgeon implants the IOL in about the same place as the natural lens, so that it results in the most natural vision.

Types of IOLs include:

  •     Monofocal IOL: This IOL is most commonly used. It is usually used to correct for distance vision. Using this IOL option means that patients will likely still use glasses for close vision.
  •     Multifocal IOL: These IOLs provide both distance and near correction at the same time.
  •     Accommodative IOL: These lenses move or change shape inside the eye, allowing correct vision at different distances.
  •     Toric IOL: This lens is used for those with astigmatism.

“Unlike many of the other major eye diseases, such as glaucoma or diabetes-related eye disease, cataracts can be easily and painlessly treated by surgery to remove and replace the eye’s lens, restoring sight for most patients,” said Mr. Todd. “We urge patients to work with their eye doctor to understand their diagnosis and the best available treatment options.”
