ECINS Student Mental Health Survey Emphasizes Challenges for Adolescents During Mental Health Awareness Month

ECINS Student Mental Health Survey Emphasizes Challenges for Adolescents During Mental Health Awareness Month

ECINS Student Mental Health Survey Emphasizes Challenges for Adolescents During Mental Health Awareness Month

“As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s crucial that we provide our educators and school personnel with the tools, resources, and collaborative technology they need to empower students and promote their mental health and well-being.” -Gary Pettengell, ECINS

ECINS, the global provider of a unique, collaborative, cloud-based case management system for schools, commemorates Mental Health Awareness Month at a critical time for student mental health.

Schools are increasingly on the front lines of this enormous challenge, and ECINS’ The State of Student Mental Health Survey highlights these trends. The expansive survey solicited input from school social workers, teachers, counselors, administrators, and other stakeholders working on the front lines with students to enable, empower and inspire their success.

The survey found that 85 percent of respondents agree or strongly agree that students seem more stressed and anxious than in previous school years.

Mental Health Challenges Are Expansive & Impact Academic Performance

These findings align with the most recent CDC data, which found that teenagers, especially girls, reported increasing mental health challenges, experiences of violence, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in the past year.

It’s also a continuation of a decade-long trend that saw a 40 percent increase in students reporting “feelings of persistent sadness and hopelessness—as well as suicidal thoughts and behaviors.”

Meanwhile, a long-term analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found a sharp increase in mental-health-related visits to emergency rooms by children, teenagers, and young adults over the past decade.

In the ECINS survey, 89 percent of respondents saw a strong connection between students’ mental health and academic progress, a reality underscored by broad declines in math and reading test scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, commonly referred to as the nation’s report card.

More recently, national test scores in U.S. history plunged, with just 18 percent of eighth graders considered proficient.

Schools Are the Front Lines of Support

The ECINS survey found that students are often willing to share their struggles with a trusted adult, providing an opening for school social workers, teachers, coaches, administrators, and other stakeholders to help students receive the support they need.

“As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s crucial that we provide our educators and school personnel with the tools, resources, and collaborative technology they need to empower students and promote their mental health and well-being,” said Gary Pettengell, co-founder and CEO of ECINS. “At ECINS, we are committed to helping schools navigate these complex issues by offering innovative, effective solutions that facilitate communication, streamline case management, and foster a supportive environment for all students.”

National Trends Indicate New Approach, Programs Needed at Community & School Levels

Understanding that hospital treatment centers are overburdened, including a devastating New York Times investigation that discovered hundreds of teenagers sleeping in emergency departments awaiting help, JAMA and other mental health professionals describe a “‘critical need’ to expand nonhospital treatment options,” including programs in schools.

Unfortunately, most school personnel feel unprepared to meet their multifaceted needs. ECINS’ survey identified technology as a solution, helping school personnel connect students to resources and support their growth and development.

As one respondent explained, “Collaborative technology exists and can assist [school social workers] to support more students.”

A proven, effective, and documented collaboration process can help improve outcomes, allowing teachers or other staff to quickly refer students to appropriate services and ensure they receive needed support. Technology solutions can help make the connection by tracking students’ progress, helping schools to better understand their needs and providing valuable data on the impact of intervention strategies.

ECINS HIPAA-compliant system helps provide that connection. This year ECINS and the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) joined forces to provide school social workers with collaborative case management that allows better communication and engagement between students and their support networks.

“When paired with other solutions, like universal screening, proactive counseling, and sufficient access to regular support services, we better support adolescents when they experience various mental health maladies,” said Pettengell.

Leaders from RadEqual and the AAWR Sign MOU, Solidifying Commitment to Advance Opportunities in Radiology

News Image

Our new partnership with RadEqual will give us the profound chance to further inspire women within this community, and we’re proud to sponsor future activities that will be the catalyst for amplifying the next-generation of leaders.

Leaders from RadEqual, an organization that fosters networking and mentorship opportunities for leaders in radiology, informatics, and IT management, and the American Association for Women in Radiology (AAWR) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the 2023 American College of Radiology’s annual meeting in Washington D.C. The two-year MOU will merge both parties into a formal agreement that will support increased collaboration and promote a shared pursuit of creating educational initiatives for the broader radiology community.

“It is part of the AAWR’s mission and purpose to create networking and mentorship opportunities for leaders in the radiology field,” said Dr. Amy Patel, President, AAWR. “Our new partnership with RadEqual will give us the profound chance to further inspire women within this community, and we’re proud to sponsor future activities that will be the catalyst for amplifying the next-generation of leaders.”

In August 2022, RadEqual launched a webinar series sponsored by Intelerad, and now the AAWR, on overcoming the mid-career stall. Webinar attendees have the opportunity to learn from some of the healthcare industry’s most renowned leaders. The educational series will continue through July this year, with the next session being hosted on May 17 by Dr. Nancy Spector, Senior Vice Dean for Faculty and Professor of Pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine, Executive Director of ELAM and ELH, and the Executive Director of the Lynn Yeakel Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership. Dr. Spector will focus on the topics of mentorship, sponsorship and networking strategies for success.

“Since its founding, RadEqual’s partners and supporters have been at the forefront of creating opportunities for and empowering leaders in the healthcare community,” said Dr. Geraldine McGinty, RadEqual co-founder and Professor of Clinical Radiology and Population Health Sciences, Weill Cornell Medicine. “For over four decades, the AAWR has driven

monumental change, and I am proud that today, we can now align our efforts and build a more promising future for leaders in radiology together.”

In November 2016, RadEqual was born when Dr. McGinty, along with other female leaders, noticed that they were often the only women in the room during events. Through networking and open dialogues, women shared similar experiences in the technology sector, where they are often underrepresented in executive leadership roles and corporate board seats. Today, RadEqual’s initiatives are supported by thought leaders in the healthcare industry, and the global RadEqual community, composed of women, men and nonbinary individuals, has grown to hundreds of individuals who are interested in increasing diversity within the various disciplines related to medical imaging. Intelerad is proud to sponsor the organization alongside the AAWR as it continues to grow and partner with other like-minded groups.

“Collaborating with RadEqual has expanded Intelerad’s mission to include supporting the female leaders in radiology who are the future of healthcare,” said Marissa Carlson, Chief Marketing Officer & Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chair, Intelerad. “The newly solidified partnership between RadEqual and the AAWR signals the importance being placed on connecting women with mentors in their field, and we’re proud to help foster those opportunities.”

An annual awards ceremony is hosted each year recognizing leaders and advocates in the radiology and informatics space. Ideal Option Releases Patient Outcomes Report for Montana to Show Effectiveness of Medication-Assisted Treatment for Fentanyl, Heroin, Methamphetamine and Cocaine

Ideal Option, a national leader in outpatient medication-assisted treatment for addiction to opioids and other substances, has released its 2022 Annual Patient Outcomes Report for patients living in Montana.

This report contains an aggregated view of patients’ geographic and demographic characteristics, their stage and duration of care, adherence to medication and their substance use over time based on lab specimens collected during 2022 from more than 1,700 patients.

The data support the effectiveness of treating addiction with FDA-approved medications combined with regular lab testing to verify medication adherence, create accountability and ensure patient safety.

Among Montana patients who remained in treatment from initiation to the maintenance stage of care during 2022, the report shows:

  • 93% less total opioid use
  • 97% less fentanyl use
  • 94% less heroin use
  • 87% less methamphetamine use
  • 84% less cocaine use

The report also reveals synthetic drug use continuing to rise among enrolling patients in 2022, particularly fentanyl. Fentanyl is regularly mixed with other illicit drugs to make them more addictive, often without the user knowing.

“Polysubstance use disorder is now the most common diagnosis at Ideal Option,” said Tim Kilgallon, CEO at Ideal Option. “In 2022, over half of all Montana patients tested positive for two or more substances at enrollment, and 24% tested positive for three or more substances.”

The data corroborate state reports of the increasingly prevalent role that fentanyl plays in the substance use epidemic. According to data released by the Montana Attorney General’s Office, fentanyl seizures in the state have risen 11,000% since 2019. In 2022, task force agents seized 206,955 dosage units, triple the amount recorded in 2021.

In addition, according to the most recent State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS) summary for Montana, opioids and stimulants such as methamphetamine were the most common substances associated with a fatal overdose from 2019-2020. Ideal Option data show that standard treatment for opioid use disorder dramatically reduces the use of methamphetamine in patients who test positive for both.

Princeton Medspa Partners has expanded its team by hiring a new Regional Director of Sales and Operations, Catherine Gimple.

“I am looking forward to learning from all the different clinics, traveling and being a part of this growing company led by legends in the field,” says Catherine.

Princeton Medspa Partners, a growing merger and acquisition company in the medspa industry, recently hired Catherine Gimple as the new Regional Director of Sales and Operations. Catherine comes into this role with coaching and leadership training experience as the Area Manager of Greenspring Medical Aesthetics’ three locations in the Tucson, AZ area.

“In my new position as Regional Director, I am helping Princeton Medspa Partners build out systems, integrations and policies as well as supporting the new clinics post-acquisition with financial mergers/transfers, operations and organizational change management,” says Catherine. “Ultimately, my goal is to support, coach and mentor new regional managers as Princeton Medspa Partners grows, and then move up in my career!”

Catherine’s role currently covers the region nationwide, but with growth and regional clinic acquisition density, it will become more concentrated. Her responsibilities include financial operations, data analysis and interpersonal communication. Catherine is also still coaching and training the Leadership Team at Greenspring Medical Aesthetics as needed.

“I am looking forward to learning from all the different clinics, traveling and being a part of this growing company led by legends in the field,” says Catherine.
