Workit Health Study Demonstrates High Retention In Rural Patients Receiving Telemedicine For Opioid Use Disorder

Our study provides compelling evidence that telemedicine-delivered treatment for opioid use disorder is remarkably effective in retaining patients in rural areas, revolutionizing addiction treatment across the country.

Workit Labs, the research arm of Workit Health, the nation’s leading provider of virtual substance use disorder treatment, is pleased to announce the publication of a groundbreaking study in the peer-reviewed journal Telemedicine and E-Health. This study represents the largest sample to date of American patients living in rural areas and receiving telemedicine for opioid use disorder. The findings demonstrate that telemedicine is an effective solution for rural populations living with opioid use disorder, addressing the challenges of accessibility and retention in treatment.

The peer-reviewed study, titled “Retention in Telehealth Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder Among Rural Populations: A Retrospective Cohort Study,” underscores the success of telemedicine in delivering treatment for opioid use disorder to individuals residing in rural communities. Lead author Marlene Lira, MPH, highlights the significance of the findings, stating, “Our study provides compelling evidence that telemedicine-delivered treatment for opioid use disorder is remarkably effective in retaining patients in rural areas, revolutionizing addiction treatment across the country. As the DEA considers the necessity of in-person visits for buprenorphine prescriptions, our findings highlight the immense value and convenience of telemedicine in providing accessible evidence-based care without in-person visits.”

The study encompassed a cohort of over 1,800 rural patients from 14 states across the United States, providing a broad view of the impact of telemedicine on opioid use disorder treatment outcomes. Patients had an average age of 37 years and nearly two-thirds were insured by Medicaid. The findings revealed exceptional retention rates among patients engaged in telemedicine-delivered treatment, surpassing or aligning with retention rates reported in traditional in-person settings. Notably, over half of the patients remained in care at the six-month mark, an improvement from previous studies utilizing claims and discharge data for in-person treatment, which reported retention rates ranging from 35% to 41%.

The study also shed light on the high adherence to buprenorphine treatment within the telemedicine-delivered model. An impressive 90% of retained patients completed urine drug screens at each time point, and among those who participated, an overwhelming 99% displayed positive results for buprenorphine. These findings underscore the robust adherence to buprenorphine treatment among patients receiving telemedicine-delivered care, alleviating concerns regarding diversion and reinforcing the efficacy and integrity of the treatment approach.

The results of this study not only demonstrate the effectiveness of telemedicine in retaining patients and improving treatment outcomes in rural areas but also highlight the positive impact of telemedicine on buprenorphine adherence, mitigating potential concerns surrounding diversion. By embracing telemedicine as a powerful tool in delivering evidence-based care, Workit Health continues to pioneer innovative solutions that ensure equitable access to comprehensive addiction treatment, benefiting individuals and communities nationwide.

Dr. Justin Coffey, Chief Medical Officer of Workit Health and senior author of the study emphasizes the potential of telemedicine in transforming addiction treatment for rural communities, stating, “The burden of drug use and overdose is tragically heavy in rural communities. Safe and effective treatment for opioid use disorder exists, but accessing that treatment is unacceptably difficult. Our findings demonstrate how Workit’s ‘patients as designers’ approach can result in dramatic and sustained reductions in harm from opioids, even in some of the hardest hit areas of rural America.”

Workit Health’s telemedicine-delivered treatment platform combines evidence-based practices with convenient, virtual care, enabling patients to access comprehensive addiction treatment from the comfort of their homes. The study’s findings support the growing body of research that demonstrates the efficacy of telemedicine in expanding treatment access and improving patient outcomes.

Charlotte Chefs Unite to FORK Cancer

Dinner benefiting four Charlotte cancer non-profits

Culinary leaders are coming together on Thursday, September 7th at the UNC Charlotte Marriott to benefit FORK Cancer, a chef-driven dinner experience supporting four local cancer non-profits. This is the second annual event between Charlotte’s Food & Beverage Social Club and Forever Oceans.

During the event, guests will enjoy a four-course meal prepared by leading Charlotte Chefs, as well as wine, signature cocktails, and dancing. This celebration of life will support cancer survivors and help fund cancer education and research in the Charlotte community while honoring the legacy of those who have been affected by cancer, a disease which will touch 1.9 million Americans and their families this year. FORK Cancer’s four non-profit partners are Teal Diva (Gynecological Cancer), Xander’s Acts of Kindness Foundation (Pediatric Cancer), The Meggs Foundation (Young Adult Cancer), and Nothing Pink (Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer).

Chef Mark Allison of Forever Oceans and founder of FORK Cancer was inspired by his own personal story in his vision for the event, “My beautiful wife Alison was diagnosed with stage-four Carcinoid Syndrome in 2008. Originally given three years to live, she courageously battled for eight years before passing away in 2015 at the age of 50. Not once did Alison complain about her condition or ask, “Why me?” She was such a driving force of inspiration. It has been eight years since she passed away and now is the time to help and support others in the same situation. Together, we can all make a difference in the lives of the people we love. FORK Cancer is a tribute to Alison and a celebration of life for all those affected by cancer.”

FORK Cancer tickets are $185 per person. Sponsor tables for eight guests are also available for purchase. FORK Cancer tickets can be purchased through F&B Social Club by clicking here:

Moving Addiction ‘into the Spotlight,’ Local Addiction Professional Joins National Experts for Conference and Lobbying in Washington

News Image

Historically, addiction has been treated like a ‘personal’ or ‘private’ issue. But it affects every aspect of society.

Orange County resident and addiction treatment professional, Amber Vaughan, will attend the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP)’s annual conference and Hill Day in Washington May 21 to 23, 2023. Vaughan, who is the admissions director for Asana Recovery, a local addiction treatment program, will benefit from lectures by more than 30 of the nation’s leaders in the field of addiction treatment at the 44th Annual Addiction Leadership Conference, titled “Meeting the Challenges of Our Time.”

“I’m excited for the chance to learn from authorities in the field and to grow as a professional,” Vaughan says.

The schedule of presenters at the NAATP Leadership Conference includes top medical professionals and industry leaders in addiction treatment such as:

  • Ann Berger, MD, Chief of the Pain and Palliative Care Service at NIH Clinical Center
  • Neeru Bakshi, MD, FAPA, CEDS, Staff Psychiatrist at Headspace Health
  • Sam Bierman, Executive Director at Maryland Addiction Recovery Center
  • John Kelly, PhD, Elizabeth R. Spallin Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School

The conference concludes with a public policy advocacy event where attendees will meet with members of Congress and other policy makers. Vaughan, along with the other NAATP Hill Day participants, will advocate for addiction education and treatment.

“Historically, addiction has been treated like a ‘personal’ or ‘private’ issue. But it affects every aspect of society,” Vaughan says. “Our elected leaders need to understand that fact. And our legislation should reflect it. I’m inspired to spur action in Congress to move the issue of addiction out of invisibility and into the spotlight.”

Arguments in Chemical Abortion Case Could Create Friction With Pro-Lifers

“Civil societies never see death as a solution to debates. All people are made in the image of God and ought to be treated with dignity commensurate with that truth. Societies that forget God fall headlong into self-destruction.”

On Wednesday, May 17, the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear arguments regarding the FDA’s illegal approval and subsequent deregulation of the lethal chemical abortion drug, Mifepristone. However, pro-life strategists are concerned the case could result from a response by the pro-abortion community, such as took place in March when arguments were heard at the 5th Circuit U.S. District Court. This was when a pro-life medical network in New York, CompassCare, was vandalized a second time. CompassCare CEO, Rev. Jim Harden, notified the FBI of concerns that the case would reignite a stir from the pro-abortion community.

Chemical abortion now represents over half of all abortion in the U.S. Overturning the FDA’s Clinton-era, fast-track approval of the drug would cut abortion in half overnight. This case would have a larger impact on the abortion landscape than even reversing Roe—a decision that sparked the prairie fire of violent pro-abortion recruitment and direct action against peaceful pro-life entities like CompassCare.

Rev. Harden notes, “Civil societies never see death as a solution to debates. All people are made in the image of God and ought to be treated with dignity commensurate with that truth. Societies that forget God fall headlong into self-destruction. Abortion and the rampant violence swirling among us should be taken as a fog horn warning the ship of state to avoid the shoals of godlessness and the resulting wickedness that will surely sink us.”

Cannacore Group Expands Services to Psychedelic Markets in Oregon and Colorado

With a Team that has over 19+ years of combined knowledge and experience in regulated industries, Cannacore Group brings a unique and innovative perspective to each application as we have worked in various states from vertically integrated systems to individual licensing.

The Magic Mushroom’s Continuous Legalization Across the United States

In 2020, Oregon became to first state to legalize psilocybin for therapeutic purposes through [Measure 109, which was approved by a 55.75% majority vote. Due to the passage of the Psilocybin Program Initiative, licensed service providers are allowed to prescribe psilocybin products to patients 21 or older. Under the Oregon Health Authority’s framework, there are four (4) types of available licenses: (1) Service Center; (2) Manufacturer; (3) Facilitator; and (4) Psilocybin Testing Laboratory. Per the Oregon Psilocybin Services’ spring newsletter, there have been 11 applications submitted for Service Center licenses, 16 applications submitted for Manufacturer license, 27 applications submitted for Facilitator licenses, and 2 applications submitted for Laboratory licenses. Presently, only 2 licenses have been awarded thus far.

Two years after the City of Denver decriminalized the use of psilocybin for adults 21 and older, the state of Colorado passed Proposition 122 in 2022 to legalize psychedelics, specifically psilocybin for therapeutic uses in mental healthcare. The appointed Natural Medicine Advisory Board will make its first recommendations by September 30th for regulatory oversight, so clinics can begin offering psilocybin by late 2024. Due to its more expansive legislation, Proposition 122 further allows officials to develop similar programs by 2026 for other psychedelic substances like DMT, ibogaine, and mescaline (excluding peyote).

Although Oregon and Colorado are the only “legalized” markets presently, several other states and cities are beginning to not only decriminalize the use of psilocybin, but also expanding their research initiatives. Washington DC has decriminalized its use, as well as several cities within Michigan, Massachusetts, and Washington. Further, numerous states have either passed or initiated bills to promote research into the medical and potential of psilocybin for a variety of conditions. Such states include: Arizona, Hawaii, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Utah, and more!
