A Theology for an Age of Affluence

The State of Church Giving through 2020 Figure 21

For example, in the year 1700, per capita GDP in the world was $625 and in the U.S., $527. By 1998, the world per capita GDP was $5,709 and the U.S. was $27,331, in 1990 inflation-adjusted dollars.

Church member giving as a percent of income was down again in 2020, according empty tomb ‘s new edition, The State of Church Giving through 2020. What’s needed to reverse the trend is summed up in the subtitle: A Theology for an Age of Affluence.

The data presented in the 32nd edition of the series shows that the downward trend in giving extends back to 1968.

Yet, according to the study’s authors, the potential for church members to increase giving is great. And they write that a broad vision can serve as a positive agenda for the affluence that has been spreading in the U.S. since about 1820.

Other findings in the new book:

  • The downward trend in the portion of income given to the church has been accompanied by a decline in the portion of church membership in the U.S. population.
  • The downward giving trends are evident across the theological spectrum.
  • Although more dollars were given by members, incomes increased faster. As a result, the dollars given represented a smaller part of available income. Further, of the increase in dollars given, the largest part stayed in the congregation to pay for operations.
  • Of the money that comes into the church, an average of 2¢ of each dollar was forwarded by the congregations to the denominations’ international mission outreach. This amount contrasts with an average of 8¢ in a group of 11 denominations from 1916 through 1927.

Yet, the new book’s authors believe church members in the U.S. can use their potential for good.

  • Churches still have some of the most effective communication systems and delivery networks that reach the neediest parts of the world.
  • The church still claims one of the largest identity groups in the U.S., made up of a broadly-based constituency.
  • The church has a clear and established framework that sets the expectation that members should use their power, in this case their financial resources, for the good of others.
  • According to an analysis in the book of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey data for 2020, young people, in the Under-25 age group, again reported that the vast majority of their charitable giving – 81% in 2020 – went to “church, religious organizations.” That suggests that religious settings are a key source of philanthropy education in young people.

So, how do the authors explain the disconnect between practice and potential?

The answer may be seen in the subtitle, A Theology for an Age of Affluence. Chapter 8 of the new book explores how church leaders can rethink the challenge they present to their members.

The first section of chapter 8 builds on the Angus Maddison analysis of per capita Gross Domestic Product from the Year 0 through 1998 AD. His analysis is in inflation-adjusted dollars. Numbers for the world (from the Year 0) and the U.S. (since 1500) are presented.

For example, in the year 1700, per capita GDP in the world was $625 and in the U.S., $527. By 1998, the world per capita GDP was $5,709 and the U.S. was $27,331, in 1990 inflation-adjusted dollars.

Ten points along the chart’s Year 0 through 1998 AD axis explore various developments in the church and the world. One observation from these points is that, as people became increasingly affluent, they became more interested in their present existence. For example, the phrase “pie in the sky” was not coined until 1911.

The second section of the chapter observes trends in society that have accompanied a lack of a theology for an age of affluence offered by the church. Problems, such as increased violence, increased “deaths of despair” from drugs and alcohol, and increased youth mental health difficulties have been observed during the period that church member giving as a portion of income has declined. A table in this section quotes various church leaders concerned about the condition of the church.

The third section of chapter 8 considers elements of what might be included in a theology for an age of affluence. Eight topics, each built on a verse, are considered, for example: “Believe Jesus” (John 14:12); “More than consumers” (Romans 12:2); and “Created for a Purpose” (Eph. 2:8-10).

The authors suggest that the church needs to offer a positive agenda for the affluence that has been flooding – and overwhelming – U.S. society, including church members, beginning in about 1820.

The authors cite available documents about one of the worst ongoing emergencies in the world, which is the rate of children under the age of five dying from treatable causes. Three leading causes are pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria. Neonatal deaths are a large percentage of the total number.

The authors suggest that church leaders could tap the imaginations of their members to meet this critical need. Potential resources of church members shared in Jesus’ name through present delivery structures can help increase child survival.

The new book, The State of Church Giving through 2020: A Theology for an Age of Affluence, is the 32nd edition in the empty tomb series. The book is available from Wipf and Stock: (541) 344-1528 or info@wipfandstock.com.

The pledge details five key tenets identified during the 2023 Healthcare Operations Summit by leaders of major health companies and hospital systems that will improve healthcare operations and patient care:

1. Empower Decisions: Unify and standardize healthcare operations tools, reporting, and analytics for decision-making — ensuring we are getting near real-time, valuable insights from data

2. Prioritize User Experience: Champion user-oriented technology that supports and strengthens an exhausted healthcare workforce

3. Advocate for Better Data: Unite around one dynamic and reliable source of truth for provider data as well as other related healthcare operational data

5. Facilitate the Advancement of Care: Embrace proven innovation and automation to streamline care and operational efficiency, raising expectations for how our industry delivers care

Pet Ownership Saves $22.7 Billion in Annual Health Care Costs

Annual Health Care Cost Savings Associated with Pet Ownership

By commissioning this economic report, we are documenting the important role of pets as valued contributors to public health,” said Steven Feldman, president of HABRI. “This data suggests that there should be stronger societal support for keeping pets and people healthy together.

Pet ownership saves the U.S. health care system $22.7 billion annually, according to a newly released economic report. The report, commissioned by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), examined the health care cost savings associated with pet ownership in the United States.

The report – made possible by a grant from Banfield Pet Hospital – was co-authored by Terry L. Clower, PhD and Tonya E. Thornton, PhD, MPPA, both of whom have extensive expertise in economic and public policy research. Their analysis not only reflects savings from better overall health for pet owners in the form of fewer doctor visits per year, but also tracks specific savings for key public health issues affecting millions of Americans, including reduced obesity, reduced infections, and better mental health for children, seniors, and our nation’s veterans.

“The results of this analysis are conservative and likely underestimate the positive health care savings connected to pet ownership,” said Dr. Clower. “Presently, there is not yet sufficient data available to calculate the direct heath care cost savings for some of the known beneficial health effects of pet ownership and we believe that future analyses will show even greater economic benefits.”

“By commissioning this economic report, we are documenting the important role of pets as valued contributors to public health,” said Steven Feldman, president of HABRI. “This data suggests that there should be stronger societal support for keeping pets and people healthy together.”

The full report, The Health Care Cost Savings of Pet Ownership, is available for download at https://habri.org/health-care-cost-savings/.

Report Methodology

The report authors conducted an analysis of the health care cost savings associated with pet ownership by examining the scientifically-documented health benefits of pet ownership; identifying the populations receiving these benefits; and quantifying the avoided health care costs for those populations. To do this, the authors first conducted a review of relevant, peer-reviewed academic and professional literature regarding the health benefits of pet ownership. The most recent cost estimates for health services and treatments related to the health conditions identified in the literature review were identified based on an examination of publicly available health care cost data. Pet ownership data was also identified from publicly available sources. The estimated savings to the U.S. healthcare system associated with pet ownership were calculated using these inputs. An additional discussion of identified health benefits associated with pet ownership for which cost savings calculations could not be made was also included in the report.

InstantGMP Celebrates 7 year Anniversary of loyal Customer FJC Tea & Spice

QA Managers reviewing electronic batch records for their dietary supplement products.

“With InstantGMP™ PRO’s new predecessor rule feature, we’re not only able to define the steps required to manufacture a batch record, we can also stop an operator from skipping a step during the production process,” said John Cantafio, owner of FJC Tea and Spice.

As the innovators of the all-in-one system to capture manufacturing, inventory and quality data, InstantGMP™ is always developing new features for our software to improve user experience, enhance existing modules, and provide new solutions that adhere to the latest industry trends and regulations.

For more than seven years, FJC Tea & Spice, a leading supplier to some of the industry’s top contract manufacturing organizations, has benefitted from the new features included in every release of InstantGMP™ PRO.

With our latest release of InstantGMP™ PRO software, FJC Tea and Spice now enjoys an array of new functionalities that help simplify their processes, enhance the security of their internal documentation, and reinforce good manufacturing practices (GMP).

InstantGMP™ PRO’s new data encryption and security measures not only provides FJC Tea and Spice with cybersecurity that’s built into the system, it also allows them to determine which of the internal documents they upload to the system have protected access.

Once these designated documents are uploaded to the system, the information contained in them is encrypted. These documents are only accessible to authorized users who have the encryption key that allows them to read the vital information.

In addition to built-in cybersecurity and the option to secure any documentation stored in the system, FJC Tea and Spice also benefits from the software’s newly upgraded requisition modules that improve the visibility of individual purchase orders generated by the software. This enhanced visibility improves the overall requisition process by allowing users to react appropriately whenever a new order is submitted to a third-party vendor.

While these new enhancements are incredibly rewarding, the latest release feature that FJC Tea and Spice finds most beneficial is the ability to add a predecessor rule to the electronic batch record system. With this new feature, JTC Tea and Spice is able to lock-in the defined steps to a specific batch record to ensure that the operator completes all previous steps in sequence before they move to the next step during production.

“To say that we’re impressed by each new release of InstantGMP™ PRO software is an understatement. With the new predecessor rule feature, we’re not only able to define the steps required to manufacture a batch, we can also stop an operator from skipping a step during the production process,” said John Cantafio, owner of FJC Tea and Spice. “The system continues to provide us with greater control over our manufacturing, reduce the risk of operator error, and ensure that our processes adhere to GMP standards.”

“Thanks to the feedback we receive from long-standing clients like FJC Tea and Spice, we gain new insight into the many challenges manufacturers and suppliers face every day,” said Dr. Richard Soltero, President of InstantGMP. “With this information at top of mind, we can then assess our system to develop new features that solve these specific pain points and include these enhancements in our future releases. This makes our product appealing to new audiences and more rewarding for our existing clients.”

If you’re interested in learning more about the latest release of InstantGMP™ PRO software and the many solutions it provides for manufacturing, inventory and quality control, please contact our team today.

New Affordable Housing Community for Seniors Opens in Houston’s Third Ward

“The opening of The Citadel creates a beautiful and affordable place for seniors on very limited incomes so they can live in dignity and remain close to friends and family living nearby,” said Eric Price, President of The NHP Foundation.

The NHP Foundation (NHPF), a national not-for-profit provider of affordable housing, announced today that its newly constructed 74-unit affordable housing development, The Citadel at Elgin, is officially open in Houston’s historic Third Ward to support lower income seniors. The independent living community is managed by Change Happens CDC, a Houston non-profit community development corporation.

“Third Ward is one of Houston’s oldest and most distinct neighborhoods,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said. “The city welcomes this beautiful property to the community, and we are proud to be a partner. It furthers the goal of adding 7,000 new affordable apartment homes in Houston by the end of 2023.”

Change Happens CDC purchases and renovates drug-infested dilapidated homes and purchases vacant lots to develop affordable single-family and multifamily housing. The organization has purchased and renovated over 50 homes and lots in the Third Ward.

“This is the culmination of a decades-long effort to end blight and improve the neighborhood,” said the Rev. Leslie Smith II, CEO and founder of Change Happens CDC. “I had a dream in 1983 that led me to create Change Happens to transform an at-risk community by rehabilitating crack houses and providing affordable living options in Third Ward. Standing here today, I am in awe of what we have accomplished thus far.”

Located at Elgin and Tierwester streets, the gated community is built for people who are 55 and older and includes 11 studio apartments and 63 one-bedroom apartments. Each unit comes with energy efficient stainless-steel appliances, washers and dryers, balconies, granite countertops, and luxury vinyl plank flooring.

“I went to Jack Yates High School right down the street so I know what this area used to look like,” said District D Council member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz. “And this is a transformation. And I am so very thankful…to open the doors to another important affordable housing community in Houston.”

More than 20 apartment homes have been pre-leased. Change Happens CDC will provide residents with Permanent Supportive Housing needs and lighter touch service needs.

The property is in walking distance to a light rail stop and three bus lines; and its proximity to the Medical Center, area parks and other health facilities make this an ideal location to live. Property amenities and features include a courtyard on the second-floor deck with shade trees, outdoor TV, grilling area and lounge chairs; covered garage parking; a Great Room with a kitchen, and a multipurpose room.

The development is funded in part by $10.25 million in federal Disaster Relief funds administered by the City of Houston’s Department of Housing and Community Development for NHPF’s ground-up construction. Additional funds for the project were secured through 4% and Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and tax-exempt bonds.

“The opening of The Citadel creates a beautiful and affordable place for seniors on very limited incomes so they can live in dignity and remain close to friends and family living nearby,” said Eric Price, President of the NHP Foundation. “This is our newest affordable housing property in Houston and is part of NHPF’s Affiliate Program which partners with local organizations including faith-based entities to bring development, finance, asset management, resident services, fund raising and other managerial assistance to them.”

The Citadel at Elgin is one of five NHPF affordable apartment communities in Houston. Others include Cleme Manor in the Fifth Ward and Pepper Tree Manor in Spring Branch. Properties under construction include RoseMary’s Place Apartments and Temenos Place Apartments in Midtown.

Historical Novel Inspired by a Collection of Nursing Documents Preserved from the Morgan Library & Museum

News Image

“When learning about challenges overcome by real people in the past, it can help you plan your path for a meaningful future,” Belmont said.

As a nurse, author Mary F. Belmont found herself fascinated by the history of her profession. While collecting material for a publication, she stumbled upon archives from a New York hospital, chronicling the experiences of nurses who worked in the U.S during the immigration era.

As she dove deeper into the lives of these nurses, she became inspired to share their stories, through her new novel, “Stepping over Rooftops: Health Care During the Era of Mass Immigration to America,” a tale of a young nurse trainee’s journey into adulthood while contributing to the promise of America through healthcare.

Set in 1882, the book focuses on 18-year-old Rosa Campo, an Italian immigrant and one of the lucky few chosen to train to become a nurse. As they learn to step from rooftop to rooftop when caring for poor patients who live on the least expensive top floor, Rosa and the other nurses diligently work to fulfill their dreams of healing and changing the world by advocating for healthcare for the underserved.

“I wanted to capture what it was like for these young women who came from poor migrant families and have little choice about their futures,” Belmont said. “Most are expected to marry and produce children. However, these women brought new approaches to patient care and played a key role in addressing the healthcare needs of marginalized communities.”

Belmont hopes by sharing these stories, she will encourage young people to consider entering the profession and inspire them to make an important contribution to the world by advocating for the underserved.

“When learning about challenges overcome by real people in the past, it can help you plan your path for a meaningful future,” Belmont said.

Michael G. Dryden

“Being elected as a Fellow of the College of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers is one of the most meaningful distinctions a workers’ comp lawyer can achieve. I am humbled to be included along with colleagues who are doing important work in an area of law that affects people’s lives deeply.”

Philadelphia labor, employment, workers’ compensation and family law firm Willig, Williams & Davidson is pleased to announce that partner Michael G. Dryden has been elected a Fellow of The College of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers.

Election as a Fellow is one of the highest recognitions by a lawyer’s colleagues of sustained, outstanding performance and contribution to the field of workers’ compensation law. Every Fellow must meet the College’s high standards for integrity, professionalism and character.

“Being elected as a Fellow of the College of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers is one of the most meaningful distinctions a workers’ comp lawyer can achieve,” said Dryden. “I am humbled to be included along with colleagues who are doing important work in an area of law that affects people’s lives deeply.”

The College of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers was established to honor attorneys who have distinguished themselves in workers’ compensation law. Members have worked in their field for at least 20 years, representing plaintiffs and defendants, serving as judges, educating others about workers’ compensation, overseeing agencies, and developing legislation. Individuals are nominated based on their professional qualifications, ethical standards, character, integrity, expertise, and leadership. Fellows further the objective of the College to foster excellence in the field through scholarship, teaching, lecturing, and publishing writings on workers’ compensation or related fields of law.

Certified as a Workers’ Compensation specialist by the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Dryden serves as chair of Willig, Williams & Davidson’s workers’ compensation department. He is proud to battle on the side of working people, striving to ensure they receive the benefits to which they are entitled when they incur work-related injuries or fall ill to a work-related disease. His legal counsel has helped hundreds of workers, from firefighters to machinists to truck drivers, claim their rightful benefits for all types of work-related injuries and diseases.

Dryden represents clients in workers’ compensation and pension matters before the Philadelphia Civil Service Commission. He is actively engaged in the firm’s management of Heart & Lung Act cases throughout Pennsylvania, including occupational disease claims for cancer, heart disease, and toxic exposures. A recognized expert in this area of law, he has been called upon to testify before state and municipal legislative bodies regarding issues involving workers’ compensation, occupational disease, and hearing loss. He also trains union leaders on issues involving injured members and conducts educational seminars for union stewards.

The newest class of Fellows of the College of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers was inducted during a dinner at the conclusion of an American Bar Association national institute program held May 5-6, 2023, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.
