New Lyme Disease Vaccine Research Study For Children Aims to Combat Growing Tick Threat

With the tick season well underway, a new vaccine research study is being conducted in both Bridgeport and Stamford, Connecticut to help protect children from the growing threat of Lyme disease. The study, which is focused on children between the ages of 5 and 17, aims to add a weapon that aids in the prevention of Lyme disease in this vulnerable population.

Lyme disease is a serious illness that can be transmitted by the bite of an infected tick. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, joint pain, and headaches, and if left untreated, the infection can lead to more serious complications such as neurological problems or heart disease. This year, experts are predicting a particularly bad tick season, which makes the need for research into Lyme disease prevention even more urgent.

The new vaccine research study, which is being led by a team of experienced healthcare professionals and researchers, will focus on the evaluation of the safety of a vaccine for Lyme disease in children. The study will involve a group of children who will receive the study vaccine, and their immune response and overall health will be closely monitored over the course of the study.

“We believe that a vaccine for Lyme disease could be an important tool in the fight against this growing public health threat,” said Dr. Amy Kappelman, an investigator on the study. “This year’s tick season is expected to be particularly bad, and we need to find better ways to protect children from this dangerous disease.”

The research team hopes that this study will provide valuable insights into the development of an effective vaccine for Lyme disease in children.

The clinical research study is currently recruiting participants, and interested families are encouraged to contact the research team for more information. To learn more about this study, visit alsaresearch.com or call 203-374-9816 for the Bridgeport location or 203-325-8529 for Stamford.

EmeritusDX Announces Launch of New Molecular Test, MetaDX™

News Image

“By launching this test, we continue down our committed path of improving patient outcomes as well as reducing overall treatment costs.” Robert Embree, CEO

EmeritusDX, a rapidly growing cancer diagnostics and information company, today announced the commercial availability of MetaDX™, a PCR-based assay designed to provide personalized treatment guidance for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer. Performed on biopsied prostate tissue, MetaDX™ measures the AR-V7/AR-WT Ratio to predict the patient’s resistance to Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) early on in the treatment process.

“MetaDX™ addresses an important treatment decision for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer,” said Robert Embree, Chief Executive Officer, EmeritusDX. “By launching this test, we continue down our committed path of improving patient outcomes as well as reducing overall treatment costs.”

Advanced prostate cancer tends to be hormone sensitive and is often treated with androgen deprivation therapy. However, resistance to this therapy can develop through first, second, and third lines of therapy. “Our goal is to alert physicians when resistance to therapy is identified in these patients so that effective alternative treatments are provided in the earliest possible phase.”

The MetaDX™ assay is currently available from EmeritusDX’s Irvine, CA laboratory. The test is performed on paraffin embedded prostate tissue and is reported out within 3-5 days. Clients have the option of ordering this test as a reflex or on demand.

Highmark Celebrating 30th Anniversary of Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Raising Awareness of CHIP’s Importance as COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Ends

With Medicaid redetermination resuming after the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency, CHIP will be a safety net for kids in families who may no longer qualify for Medicaid coverage and do not receive insurance from another employer-based or government program.

Highmark is celebrating the 30th anniversary of enrolling the first child in Pennsylvania in the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)— a comprehensive, low-or-no-cost health insurance program that ensures our kids are protected. And, with Medicaid redetermination resuming after the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency, CHIP remains a vital program. CHIP will be a safety net for some children in families who may no longer qualify for Medicaid coverage and do not receive insurance from another employer-based or government program.

The CHIP program emerged from a grassroots, community-wide effort to provide care for kids following the collapse of the steel industry. CHIP has evolved into a cornerstone of American health care, providing an affordable coverage option for more than seven million kids in the U.S. and peace of mind for families.

In the 1980s, Highmark partnered with more than 15,000 individuals, churches, unions, schools and other community organizations to raise funds and identify uninsured children. Highmark brought together those groups and healthcare providers to offer services and design a first-of-its-kind offering: The Caring Program for Children, a needs-based insurance program that provided the same level of care and access offered to other Blue Cross Blue Shield members. No child was excluded due to a pre-existing condition. Communities stepped up by raising funds for uninsured children in their own neighborhoods, and Highmark matched those funds dollar-for-dollar while covering the administrative costs of the program. It was the first health insurance program in the nation to cover at-risk kids.

“We were able to show that opening the doors to the health care system decreased unmet medical care, improved health outcomes, and ultimately enhanced both the economy and quality of life in the region,” said Tom Doran, president of Highmark Health Plan. “The Caring Program evolved into a coalition of more than 20 other Blues plans serving kids across the country. But we knew that we could make an even greater impact on the lives of children and families in Pennsylvania. So, we partnered with legislators and community organizations to create a sustainable model for a statewide children’s health insurance program. We worked together to design benefits and create public-private partnerships.

“We took the learnings and successful model of The Caring Program and scaled it,” Doran said. “And in 1993, Highmark enrolled the first child into CHIP in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania led the way in caring for at-risk children, and the rest of the nation followed.”

CHIP is a continued source of pride for Pennsylvanians and for Highmark—which insures more than 15,000 kids across 62 counties in Pennsylvania through its Highmark Healthy Kids CHIP program.

“Today, in the face of new and difficult challenges, CHIP is there for kids and families,” said Alexis Miller, segment president for government business, Highmark Inc. “With Medicaid redetermination resuming after the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency, CHIP will be a safety net for kids in families who may no longer qualify for Medicaid coverage and do not receive insurance from another employer-based or government program. For those currently enrolled in CHIP, it’s crucial that families verify their eligibility to ensure they keep the coverage that helps children grow up healthy and strong in body and mind.”

Families can learn more about Highmark Healthy Kids, a CHIP HMO, by visiting Highmarkchip.com or calling 1-800-KIDS-105 or by visiting dhs.pa.gov/CHIP.

Petros Levounis, president, American Psychiatric Association

Dr. Levounis’ keynote, “Neurobiology of Addiction in 2023,” will be held from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. Friday, November 3.

In the ever-changing field of addiction treatment, HMP Global’s 2023 East Coast Symposium will provide the latest strategies and emerging trends, including a keynote presentation on the neurobiological attributes of addiction, presented by Petros Levounis, MD, MA, the new President of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

Taking place November 3-5 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, the meeting is an opportunity for mental health professionals to network and collaborate with like-minded peers, learn effective strategies for addiction treatment and behavioral health, and address significant challenges impacting patients.

In addition to his role as President of the APA, Dr. Levounis serves as professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and associate dean for professional development at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He is also the chief of service at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, and director of the Northern New Jersey Medication Assisted Treatment Center of Excellence.

Dr. Levounis’ keynote, “Neurobiology of Addiction in 2023,” will be held from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. Friday, November 3. Describing addiction as “the hijacking of the pleasure-reward pathways of the brain and a weakening of its executive function,” Levounis’ presentation will cover how this model has been expanded to include newer concepts such as motivational circuitry and anti-reward pathways. These 21st century discoveries inform clinical innovations that are now changing the landscape of the pharmacological and psychosocial treatments of substance use disorders and the behavioral addictions.

Educational program

The educational program at East Coast Symposium covers the most important topics facing behavioral health, addiction, and treatment center professionals, including trauma, pain management, harm reduction, family, ethics, and cannabis. Dr. Levounis joins a lineup of leading experts in the addiction treatment field, including:

The East Coast Symposium features more than 35 national expert speakers presenting a robust, three-day educational program, and opportunities to earn more than 16 CME/CE credits.
