NEDHSA, Food Bank of NELA Launch Mental Health & Food Insecurity Survey

News Image

“This is an opportunity to assess just how large, complex, and intertwined the problems of mental illness and food instabilities are for vulnerable people and communities in our region,” Dr. Sizer said.

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority (NEDHSA) and the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana (Food Bank of NELA) announce the launch of a Mental Health and Food Insecurity Survey. The survey assessment will help measure food insecurity, food inadequacy, and mental health needs among clients served between the two agencies.

NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer said the information discovered will “help us better understand the complex challenges our people have with food insecurity, mental illness, and negative social determinants of health.”

“This is an opportunity to assess just how large, complex, and intertwined the problems of mental illness and food instabilities are for vulnerable people and communities in our region,” Dr. Sizer said. “Once known, we will further develop strategies and partnerships to do something about the problems found. We are doing applied research. We intend to meet the needs of people with what we find.”

Data will be shared between NEDHSA and the Food Bank of NELA to create appropriate referrals to services provided by both agencies.

In September 2021, both agencies announced a mutual memorandum of understanding designed to help meet the needs of those seeking mental health, addictive disorder, prevention and wellness, developmental disability, and food insecurity services in the 12 parishes of Northeast Louisiana.

Food Bank of NELA Executive Director Jean Toth said NEDHSA’s Mental Health and Food Insecurity Survey will provide information and insight that “will help both NEDHSA and the Food Bank better serve our region.”

“The data collected can guide our future outreach and services across the twelve parishes we serve by providing a deeper understanding of many of the challenges facing our neighbors,” Toth said.

NEDHSA’s partnership with the Food Bank of NELA is an extension of its integrated care service model. NEDHSA created its own service delivery model and services network to help mitigate the negative social determinants of health experienced by many of its mental health, addiction, prevention and wellness, primary health, and developmental disability patients.

Dr. Sizer added: “Our region’s population health will not improve until we begin working across governmental, business, faith, and nonprofit silos. We must also be surgical in our approach as we work to root out those negative social determinants of health that limit the potential of our region’s people. And when I think about food insecurity as we approach Thanksgiving, there can be no better way to show compassion for vulnerable people than to help them meet their food and related social needs like housing, health care, and finding a job.”

Zion Health Launches Convenient On-The Go Anti-Aging Bakuchiol Sticks

Zion Health Inc., the innovative clay-based skincare company, launches two innovative anti-aging products. “We understand that people are busier than ever and it’s hard to keep up with their skincare routine, so we created two handy anti-aging products that look just like lip balms that can be transported easily. The application is fast and easy and doesn’t require much of anyone’s time,” Fara Wong, Head of Marketing, explains.

The anti-aging solution to this problem is their “Zion Health Wide Awake Eye Revival Bakuchiol Stick” and “Zion Health Smile Lines Therapy Bakuchiol Stick” which are very light and immediately absorb into the skin, so they can be used under other moisturizers and sunscreen. It is safe to use twice a day: Made with Bakuchiol which isn’t as drying or irritating as retinol, the eye and lip sticks can be used, both during your morning and nighttime skincare routines.

Gentle on the skin, Bakuchiol is suitable for all skin types; the majority of people are able to use it, including those who are pregnant. “Studies have shown that Bakuchiol helps prevent fine lines and wrinkles, and helps with pigmentation that causes dark circles around the eyes, elasticity, and firmness. It works through the same receptors that retinol uses, which is why many refer to it as a natural retinol alternative,” says Doctor Patel.

Lifestyle factors can cause premature aging. Excessive exposure to Ultraviolet Radiation, Sun, Stress and unhealthy diet are some of the factors that primarily speed the pace of aging. In such situations, people tend to invest in products without researching about the ingredients used. One bad decision can make things worse for the skin and with life getting busier by each passing day, it is difficult to take out time and make herbal products at home that are free from chemicals and have no side effects. But worry no more; Zion Health carefully develops gentle yet effective formulas using clay.

The earliest signs of premature aging start to show around the eyes especially without proper care. The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than the skin on other parts of the body.

Zion Health centers around their main ingredient ‘Clay’, the minerals found in clay provide many benefits to people who choose to incorporate its use into their daily lives. The healing properties found in the trace minerals provide a wonderful, natural alternative to chemicals found in most manufactured products. Zion Health offers a huge range of products. It is the ultimate solution to any skincare problem. They offer:

  • SkinCare: This includes masks, cleansers and creams. Moisturizers, sunscreen and toners are available.-

INADcure Foundation Launches Inaugural International Scientific Conference Specifically Focused On Innovative Discoveries And Accelerating Research Of Infantile Neuroaxon

Everyone who attends this international gathering of academics, researchers, and industry will play a part in shaping the future direction of INAD/PLAN-specific research and help us build a comprehensive and collaborative strategy to combat this cruel disease.

The INADcure Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit charity supporting the development of treatments, including a cure, for Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (INAD) and other forms of PLA2G6-related neurodegeneration (PLAN), today announced the first international scientific conference focused specifically on increasing awareness, sharing knowledge and identifying opportunities for collaboration on INAD and PLAN. The event, the International Scientific Conference on Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy and other types of PLA2G6-Associated Neurodegeneration (PLAN), will take place virtually on November 10-11, 2021. Registration is open through November 6, 2021.

INAD is an ultra-rare disorder, with no known treatment or cure, affecting approximately 150 children worldwide. Like other more common neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, INAD is a progressive disease and symptoms include poor motor function, involuntary eye movements, seizures, hearing loss, and difficulty swallowing and breathing. Most children with INAD do not live beyond age 10. The goal of the scientific conference is to advance research and build a collaborative community engaged in finding treatments and a cure.

“The INADcure Foundation is the only patient advocacy organization dedicated exclusively to advancing INAD research and supporting the INAD community worldwide, and we are extremely proud to launch our inaugural scientific conference, bringing together a dream team of experts focused on therapeutic solutions and treatment innovations,” said Leena Panwala, Founder and Executive Director, INADcure. “Everyone who attends this international gathering of academics, researchers, and industry will play a part in shaping the future direction of INAD/PLAN-specific research and help us build a comprehensive and collaborative strategy to combat this cruel disease.”

At the November event, scientists and experts from academia, the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, government agencies, and key leaders from patient advocacy organizations will gather to share knowledge on INAD and PLAN and present the latest discoveries in INAD/PLAN research. Building off the conference theme of “Come for the Science, Stay for the Cure!” the conference will also serve as the kickoff for the INAD Collaborative Research Network, an initiative designed to create opportunities for data sharing and to foster academic-industry collaborations to accelerate therapeutic and translational research. “We believe that by introducing more researchers and industry scientists to this childhood neurodegenerative disease, we are reducing the risk of being left behind when emerging technologies and opportunities for treatment become available. We want the scientific community to know that the INAD community has been mobilized and is ready to work together to change the outcome for children battling this fatal disease,” said Panwala.

“INAD is a devastating disease for which there are currently no treatments available,” said Hugo J Bellen, D.V.M., Ph.D., Baylor College of Medicine and Co-Chair of the Foundation’s Scientific Medical Advisory Board. “Recent studies have shown that there are disease mechanisms shared with other neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia, and with lysosomal disorders such as Gaucher’s disease. This conference, the first of its kind, will bring together researchers to discuss the significance of shared biological pathways and help identify common therapeutic targets for drug development. Our goal is that more collaboration and discovery will help inform future research initiatives and further our efforts toward finding a cure.”

The conference is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. In 2020, the INADcure Foundation was selected to be part of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s Rare As One Network, a group of 30 patient-led organizations that are accelerating research and driving progress in the fight against rare diseases. Medical and scientific professionals in academia, government, biotech, and pharmaceutical industries can learn more about the scientific conference and see a draft agenda here. Session topics include the pathogenesis and clinical aspects of INAD, clinical trial readiness, gene therapy updates, and more.

About the INADcure Foundation

The INADcure Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity whose mission is to support the development of treatments, including a cure, for Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (INAD) and other forms of PLA2G6-related neurodegeneration (PLAN). Miami-Based Genuine Health Group Makes First Acquisition Since $160 Million Capital Infusion

Genuine Health Group logo

My partners and I wanted to join forces with a healthcare innovator.

Genuine Health Group (“Genuine Health”), a rapidly growing healthcare services company that partners with primary care physicians to deliver value-based care, announced today that it acquired PreventiMed, a physician-owned and operated management services organization (MSO). This is the first acquisition since Genuine Health received a $160 million investment from international alternative investment firm, Crestline Investors. PreventiMed’s founders will join Genuine Health’s leadership team.

The PreventiMed acquisition adds a sizeable cohort of primary care physicians to the company’s 200-plus physician network. In addition, the deal brings with it $43 million in annualized revenue for Genuine Health.

“We recognize the value of physician leadership, not only in the context of advancing outcomes-based clinical care, but also as a key to attracting similar, like-minded doctors,” said Genuine Health Group’s CEO, Joe Caruncho. “The physician-founders of PreventiMed understand that value-based care is here for the long haul, that it’s good for patients, and that doctors can benefit financially when they have access to the resources and infrastructure of a company like Genuine Health.”

Founded in 2017, Genuine Health has enjoyed rapid growth with an unconventional strategy. Unlike many companies competing to grow their population of Medicare patients, Genuine Health has demonstrated that growth does not require buying physician practices, but rather developing sustainable models for streamlining care delivery, improving health outcomes, and incentivizing physicians.

“My partners and I wanted to join forces with a healthcare innovator. We weren’t looking to get gobbled up and get out,” said Dr. Charles Yanes, CEO of PreventiMed. “Genuine Health is doing things differently, especially when it comes to providing a single source for managing Medicare patients’ overall care, regardless of whether those patients are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or traditional Medicare.”

Genuine Health is one of only 53 companies nationwide operating a Direct Contracting Entity (DCE), which provides more options and care coordination to patients with traditional, fee-for-service Medicare. This distinction is among the factors that led to the company’s “Excellence in Healthcare” award for CEO Joe Caruncho and ranking among the fastest-growing companies in Florida.

Dialysis Vascular Access Coalition Calls On Congress To Reverse Painful Cuts From CMS

Dialysis Vascular Access Coalition

“Yesterday’s announcement from CMS spells trouble for vascular access.”

Following this week’s decision from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to cut vascular access services by 20% Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) Rule for CY2022, the Dialysis Vascular Access Coalition’s health policy chair, Dr. Gregg Miller, issued the following statement:

“Yesterday’s announcement from CMS spells trouble for vascular access. The decision to finalize the clinical labor policy will bring about roughly 20% cuts to vascular access services, which already suffered a 39% cut in the 2017 PFS. This pattern is not sustainable for patients and providers.

“These cuts will limit patient options for life-saving care because vascular access centers will be forced to close due to insufficient reimbursement levels. The end result will accelerate the trend towards health care consolidation, further disadvantage people of color, and increase Medicare spending.

“DVAC urges Congress to take action and reform the PFS to protect patients and providers.”

DVAC is a coalition of medical specialty societies, physicians, and vascular access centers of excellence (VACs) in the office and ASC setting that provide vascular access services to individuals with advanced chronic kidney disease and End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Dental Partners of Boston Opening a New Location in Fort Point, Boston

Our mission then, as it is now, is to have the finest patient-centered practice in Boston…We are finally available to our patients in all the busiest areas of the city…within three miles of each other.

Dental Partners of Boston (dpb) was founded in 1969. Across these five decades, they have continued to grow and develop evolving into one of Boston’s most trusted and respected dental group practices. In 2004, dpb reallocated to The Prudential Tower. A signature building with an International Style, which provides a timeless look within the heart of Back Bay. Its unique interconnection with the Prudential Center offers a distinctive experience of hospitality, shopping, dining, and entertainment to all Bostonians.

Their next opportunity to serve the Boston community arrived in the fall of 2016 when they expanded their practice to Dental Partners of Boston at Charles River. Ideally located in Boston, adjacent to the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Government Center, and Beacon Hill. This second location would further increase their patient’s ability to reach a greater number of dental specialists delivering more convenient access to care. It did not take long for a large segment of our patients to begin traveling between the two locations.

“Our mission then, as it is now,” says Sergio A. Guzman D.M.D, M.S.D, the Managing Member of Dental Partners of Boston, “is to have the finest patient-centered practice in Boston.” Dr. Guzman continues, “We are proud and grateful to all our patients who have been part of this journey during our five-decade story. To complete this portion of our journey, we now proudly introduce our third location. Dental Partners of Boston at Fort Point.”

The dpb dental practice was approved by the Landmark Commission to be a part of Boston’s historic district. Their third location’s construction began in the Spring of 2021, and now, on Monday, October 18th, dpb will open its doors and welcome all of the Boston community.

The Fort Point neighborhood, where a fort stood in colonial times, is tucked between the Seaport District, South Boston, and the Fort Point Channel. As described by Boston’s Visitor’s Bureau, this neighborhood is recognized as one of New England’s largest artists’ communities. It is also home to many of Boston’s new hip and upcoming restaurants along with emerging technology companies. A family favorite, Boston’s Children’s Museum, sits on the banks of the Channel and is only a few steps away from the dpb entrance.

Now on the eve of the dpb Fort Port opening, “We are finally available to our patients in all the busiest areas of the city,” says, Dr. Guzman. “Our three dental group practices are conveniently located within three miles of each other.”

Dr. Guzman says on behalf of everyone at dpb, “When you are in the neighborhood, we would love to see you come by. There will be new faces, as well as some very familiar ones, waiting to greet you.”

Health-E Commerce launches Deadline Alerts to help millions with flexible spending accounts (FSAs) use, not lose, tax-free healthcare dollars before December 31, 2021

Account holders are more confused about deadlines and rollover this year than in recent years, and that means FSA holders are at risk of forfeiting even more than the average $500 million in FSA funds due to a missed deadline.

New survey data from Health-E Commerce shows that consumers are confused about temporary flexible spending account (FSA) deadline changes, and as a result, more than 30 million people who are enrolled in these accounts are at risk of forfeiting more unused funds to a missed deadline than ever before. To help consumers use, not lose, tax-free healthcare dollars, Health-E Commerce, parent brand of industry-leading online marketplace FSAstore.com, has launched a new Deadline Alerts feature that will automatically remind consumers of upcoming deadlines and send them valuable coupons for eligible healthcare items.

FSAstore.com, a leading online marketplace for FSA users, delivers a 100%-guaranteed eligible shopping experience that eliminates the guesswork from spending FSA funds. By signing up for deadline alerts, account holders will be notified of special promotions and new arrivals and receive a series of deadline alerts delivered via email that will countdown to their individual deadline.

FSAstore.com also features a comprehensive list of all FSA-eligible products and services, an extensive library of helpful articles and blogs about how FSAs work and the many ways to spend down funds, as well as account planning and management tools and calculators. And, to make open enrollment easier for employees and employers, Health-E Commerce also created an interactive Open Enrollment Guide to help employees determine which account type is best for them and how much to contribute.

“Consumers come to FSAstore.com for convenience, guaranteed eligibility, support, and expertise so they don’t have to worry about losing valuable healthcare dollars,” said Rida Wong, president of Health-E Commerce. “Account holders are more confused about deadlines and rollover this year than in recent years, and that means FSA holders are at risk of forfeiting even more than the average $500 million in FSA funds due to a missed deadline.”

According to Wong, Health-E Commerce surveyed more than 3,600 shoppers to FSAstore.com in September and October, and found that consumers are unaware of, or not confident in, understanding their deadlines this year. More specifically:

  • 50% are not confident that they understand the deadline changes.
  • 76% haven’t been notified of their deadline or they don’t recall being notified, if they were. This number increased from 64% in early September, indicating a growing confusion among account holders.
  • 37% have higher balances this year than they did last year, which could mean more forfeited funds than ever before if consumers aren’t educated properly.

Increased deadline confusion is being fueled by temporary changes enacted in 2020 by Congress that affected FSA deadlines and carry over rules. As a result of COVID-19, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 gave employers the choice to change or temporarily extend the FSA spending deadline. Employers were also given the option to allow employees to carry over their entire unused account balance to the upcoming plan year. Because FSAs are an employer-sponsored account, each company can have different deadlines and set rules that meet their needs.

“While deadline extensions gave consumers and account holders more flexibility and more time to spend down account funds, which was important when COVID-19 made in-person healthcare more difficult, account holders are largely unaware of whether their deadline has changed and what funds may still be available to them,” said Wong. “This, coupled with higher account balances than last year due to expanded rollover options, will make easy access to a wide variety of meaningful ways to spend FSA funds more important than ever.”
