What You Need to Know if You’re Flying with Unvaccinated Kids this Holiday Season

Chantal Patton, host of Growing Up Without Borders, shown here with husband Tyler and their three daughters.

It’s a scary statistic that less than half of parents are going to follow through with vaccinations. We really have to work with parents to understand the importance of the vaccines, review and reassure them how safe these drugs are — Dr. Cornelius Ferreira, Nuvance Health

As the holidays quickly approach, consumers continue to anguish over their decision to travel this holiday season or spend yet another year grounded in place. As kid-sized vaccine doses become readily available for children ages 5-12 and the U.S. has re-opened its borders to millions of vaccinated international travelers, questions still weigh on the minds of families across the country. Will parents actually vaccinate their kids? How likely are unvaccinated kids to potentially infect others, especially in close quarters such as airplanes? And, in light of recent events involving Southwest and American Airlines, how prepared is the airline industry to handle the anticipated increase in passenger traffic this holiday season?

ExpertFlyer recently went One-on-One with Dr. Cornelius Ferreira, Senior Vice President and System Chair for Primary Care at Nuvance Health, and Chantal Patton, host of the Growing Up Without Borders travel vlog, to get some medical insight and consumer perspectives on the general safety (and potential dangers) of traveling with family, including young children, this holiday season.

On November 2nd, the CDC gave the final sign-off to Pfizer’s kid-size COVID-19 shot. A milestone that the travel industry no doubt hopes will encourage more parents to travel with their young children this holiday season. While optimism is justified, it’s not necessarily assured — at least according to a study from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Released in October, the study found that less than half of the 1,700 participating parents would actually vaccinate their kids.

“It’s a somewhat scary statistic that less than half of parents are going to follow through with vaccinations,” said Dr. Ferreira who, in addition to his position as SVP and System Chair for Primary Care, is also in charge of Nuvance Health’s Covid-19 Vaccine Taskforce. “We know today that vaccines, whether it’s COVID-19, polio, or influenza, save lives. When we look at the millions of doses administered across the United States and over seven billion doses given worldwide, we know that these vaccines are safe and highly effective. So, we really have to work with parents to understand the importance of the vaccines, review and reassure them how safe these drugs are,” Dr. Ferreira added during his video podcast with ExpertFlyer.

Chantal Patton certainly understands the reservations many families are having about getting their children vaccinated with the Covid vaccine, but she and her family really wanted to begin traveling again and the only safe and relatively convenient way to do it was to get everyone vaccinated. “We had reservations at first, but since we are eager to start traveling again, we wanted to give ourselves the best protection against Covid,” said Patton who believes she and her family contracted Covid during a cruise in Dubai in December 2019. “Covid Toes” and daily headaches were some of the extended effects of having Covid but they seemed to dissipate following vaccination. “What is crazy is that after my first vaccine, my headaches disappeared, and I haven’t had COVID toes since, nor have the girls.”

According to Dr. Ferreira, debunking some of the myths that have flourished on the internet and social media over the last several months is crucial. “We really have to look at the science to understand that these vaccines are safe. And the reason we’ve made so much headway against the COVID-19 pandemic is because we were able to administer vaccinations so quickly and effectively over the last 12 months.”

As a family living a global nomadic lifestyle, Patton recommends checking travel and local rules and regulations for every country you plan on visiting individually. “Many countries grant entrance to fully vaccinated passengers regardless of their age. Also, keep in mind that children rarely show any Covid symptoms, so to keep everyone safe, especially elderly and immunocompromised individuals, it’s best to have children take a PCR test.”

“What we have learned through the pandemic is the importance of the things that we’ve known in healthcare for many decades,” says Dr. Ferreira. “We know that masks are extremely beneficial to help with droplet spread prevention and I tell parents to make sure their kids are masked when they go out. The second piece is we have to make sure we follow hand hygiene. And finally, keeping a safe distance still remains one of the most crucial factors as we try to avoid coming into contact with ill people.” But how does that work on a plane when you’re separated by inches, not feet?

“Most viruses or germs don’t spread easily on airplanes because of the way that air is circulated and the way that air is filtered on airplanes,” Dr. Ferreira explained. “On a recent trip I was so happy to see there were actually big signs on the plane that said, ‘HEPA filtration in place, air being circulated every two minutes.’ So I think the airline industry has done a really good job of trying to secure and keep us as safe as possible on those flights. In addition, the air volume in the airline cabins are refreshed every two to four minutes because of the HEPA filtration system that they have in place.”

eDermatology Launches Platform for Trusted Expert Skincare Advice and Product Reviews

Before we are prepared to offer honest advice, our team not only tests the products but also uses our scientific and dermatological backgrounds to help us make sense of what truly delivers benefits and does what it says.

New consumer-oriented retail platform, eDermatology, launches today as a destination for savvy beauty shoppers to compare skincare products and get trusted expert advice on demand. It is a place to get simple, honest advice on products, ingredients, studies, and skin science and to shop dermatologist-approved skincare that you would normally find only in the doctor’s office. Founded by Dr. Ani Oganesyan and a team of dermatologists and scientists, the mission is to make it simpler and more straightforward for consumers to choose clinical grade skincare formulas, especially amidst the noise and mixed messages from all over the industry.

eDermatology reviews thousands of product briefings, ingredients, and clinical studies every year so when it gives a product its seal of approval, it’s because it does what it promises. Dermatologists and scientists review each product and use their expertise, scientific background and knowledge of skin and ingredients to weed through what works and what doesn’t, what matters and what’s made up – so consumers don’t have to. If shoppers can’t find the answers they are looking for on eDermatology.com, the team has created, “Ask the eDerms” where shoppers can submit specific questions about products or their skincare needs and obtain personalized responses from the eDermatology team of doctors.

“When our patients, friends and family ask us for recommendations, we don’t take it lightly. Before we are prepared to offer honest advice, our team not only tests the products but also uses our scientific background, knowledge of dermatology and the skin, facts about ingredients, clinical studies and other research to help us make sense of what truly delivers benefits and does what it says. Now, we are bringing that same testing and vetting process to eDermatology so we can share it with everyone to help make the best skincare decisions for their skin,” says Dr. Ani Oganesyan, co-founder and President, eDermatology. Dr. Oganesyan graduated from UCLA and UCI with a PhD in Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics and has authored many research articles in top science and medical journals.

The eDermatology assortment includes popular skincare products as well as products only available through a dermatologist like CLn Skincare, Jan Marini, IS Clinical and Osmosis Beauty.

Living with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome isn’t easy. Those who experience it know it hits even harder overnight. Joseph Nazari, the Inventor of CarpalAID, suffered from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome years ago. HomeTown Health Honors Hospital Leaders at Fall Conference

Members of Dodge County Hospital leadership team accept Hospital of the Year

HomeTown Health, LLC held its 22nd Annual Fall Conference at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, October 19-22, 2021. The annual event includes breakout sessions and presentations from industry experts, hospital leaders, established public figures and healthcare leaders on a local and state level. Additionally, it is a time where HomeTown Health recognizes rural hospital employees for their success at their facility during the previous year.

“It is truly our pleasure to work alongside hospital leaders throughout the state that serve in rural facilities. It is an even greater pleasure to be able to recognize those leaders as they excel in their facilities which positively impact their communities each year,” says Kristy Thomson, COO of HomeTown Health.

Dodge County Hospital in Eastman, Georgia was named the 2021 HomeTown Health Hospital of the Year. Representatives from their community reported, “This hospital has been a light in their community over the last two years. They have been leaders in battling the pandemic. They were the first to partner with the Mayo Clinic in a COVID-19 convalescent plasma trial which had great results for their patients, they have worked through and cried over dozens of ventilated patients overflowing at times into the Emergency Room because the ICU was full. They were one of the only hospitals in their area to open a monoclonal antibody center that helped keep patients at home and out of the hospital. The entire staff has fought hard to save lives during this awful time at the risk of their own lives with smiles on their faces and compassion in their hearts. Throughout this time, their business office has run like a well-oiled machine keeping cash flowing and being one of the best run revenue cycles that we have had the pleasure of working with. All of this success with a new leader at the helm. They welcomed a new CEO not long before the pandemic hit us, and he has been a true leader that has worked side by side with his staff. This hospital remains financially stable and independent and is a great model for rural hospitals to follow.” LaDon Toole, CEO, Jan Hamrick, CFO and Joan Hartley, PFS Director gladly accepted the award on behalf of the hospital.

Kerry Trapnell, CEO at Elbert Memorial Hospital, was recognized as the recipient of the 2021 Hospital Leader of the Year, recognized for exemplary leadership and dedication to patient care, employee excellence, innovation solutions and efforts leading to the survival of Elbert Memorial Hospital in Elberton, Georgia.

Derek Rozier, CFO of Liberty Regional Medical Center, received the 2021 CFO of the Year award for outstanding leadership in hospital finance, including a demonstrated commitment to excellence in financial practices, best practices in strategic partnerships, and revenue cycle management.

Tracy Smith of Morgan Medical Center in Madison, Georgia was announced as the 2021 Business Office Leader of the Year, “chosen for outstanding leadership in sharing best practices in the business office and for your commitment to excellence, to employee education, business partner endorsement and revenue cycle improvement.”

Shawn Whittaker, Chief Nursing Officer at Miller County Hospital was recognized as the 2021 Nurse Executive of the Year, for providing exceptional leadership by adopting “Best Practices” for rural hospital improvement, for making a commitment to staff education and leadership development while emphasizing technological advances and superior patient care.

In addition to the awards presented, HomeTown Health recognized the graduates of its 2021 HomeTown Health Executive Leadership Development Program. The HomeTown Health Leadership Development program is designed to better equip the rural hospital industry with leadership to transform into tomorrow’s health care delivery system.
