Dr. Mae Smalls Glover’s newly released “God The Holy Spirit” is a compelling thesis that explores in detail what exactly the Holy Spirit is

News Image

“God The Holy Spirit”: a potent exploration of what is known of the third portion of the Holy Trinity. “God The Holy Spirit” is the creation of published author Dr. Mae Smalls Glover, who received a Doctorate of Theology in June 2020.

Dr. Glover shares, “Every Christian who has experienced the presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit should desire to know the wholeness of the Holy Spirit. The intimacy, unity, and growth in the Kingdom are promoted by our lives in God, the Holy Spirit. He is active in our prayer life, decision making process, spiritual warfare, maturity and clarity in biblical principles, just to name a few.

“God the Holy Spirit will help us discover the promised release of fire to keep us motivated to live towards our eternal destiny. God the Holy Spirit will add the ammunition to recognize the fact that the Holy Spirit is the most neglected and unappreciated third person of the Trinity. Christianity will be a more desirable spiritual lifestyle as all people become obedient to His purpose, value, and His influences in the kingdom.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Dr. Mae Smalls Glover’s new book is a thought-provoking spiritual discussion with relevant scripture for the reader’s consideration.

Dr. Glover shares in hopes of encouraging others to recognize and embrace this key component of the Trinity.

Consumers can purchase “God The Holy Spirit” at traditional brick & mortar bookstores, or online at Amazon.com, Apple iTunes store, or Barnes and Noble.

Seton Hall University and Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine Expand Interprofessional Medication-Assisted Treatment Training Grant for Opioid-Use Disorders

“We believe this work is making a difference for the future of treating this major health problem,” said Kathleen Neville, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, associate dean of graduate studies and research at the Seton Hall College of Nursing, and the grant’s principal investigator.

An innovative opioid treatment federal grant program will fund critical training through the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, the Seton Hall University College of Nursing and the Seton Hall University School of Health and Medical Sciences.

The “Expanded Interprofessional Medication-Assisted Treatment Training Program” is a three-year grant totaling about $450,000 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA), a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The grant allows the training of future clinicians to prescribe medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services for individuals with an opioid use disorder (OUD). The new three-year grant follows a former three-year grant which concluded this summer with a major conference.

“We believe this work is making a difference for the future of treating this major health problem,” said Kathleen Neville, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, associate dean of graduate studies and research at the Seton Hall College of Nursing, and the grant’s principal investigator. “In our first grant, more than 400 students in our three schools have received training. Now in our new grant, we are engaging in partnership with Monmouth University to train their nurse practitioner and physician assistant students, anticipating that 1,000 students will be DATA-waivered to prescribe MAT after graduation and be more prepared to address healthcare disparities and the opioid epidemic.”

“This collaborative project allows us to make an impact at the very foundation of medicine, providing training to future clinicians to raise awareness of, and impart solutions to, the challenges brought about by the opioid epidemic,” said Stanley R. Terlecky, Ph.D., associate dean of Research and Graduate Studies, and chair of Medical Sciences at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, another one of the project’s leaders. “We look forward to continuing and indeed, expanding this good work for another three years.”

The grant covers training for nurse practitioner, physician assistant and medical students regarding MAT for individuals with opioid-use disorders. Upon completion of the training, all students receive a Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA) waiver – formally permitting prescription of the powerful anti-opioid dependency drug buprenorphine.

According to Brian B. Shulman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow, FASAHP, FNAP, dean of the School of Health and Medical Sciences, “The school’s physician assistant (PA) students participation in this second SAMHSA grant reaffirms not only expanding the role of the PA as an integral member of the interprofessional healthcare team but also reaffirms our commitment to preparing future healthcare practitioners and leaders to make a difference in the lives of the individuals in their care.”

The first three-year grant enabled the development and implementation of an interprofessional DATA-Waiver Training Program embedded in the curriculum in the three schools. This DATA-Waiver program consists of 24 hours of didactic training for nurse practitioner and physician assistant students and eight hours for medical students, followed by 10 hours of clinical training at Hackensack Meridian Health Carrier Clinic in Belle Mead, New Jersey, and Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey.

“The initial grant awarded in 2018 represents a successful interprofessional initiative to address a worsening opioid crisis in America,” reported Dean Marie Foley, Ph.D., R.N., College of Nursing. “This second grant addresses vulnerable and underserved populations in urban areas where there are significantly higher mortality rates. Attention to disadvantaged and marginalized populations is very much needed to confront this epidemic.”

The new project will additionally address health disparities and social determinants of health of underserved, vulnerable populations, including those living in urban communities with high mortality rates due to overdose. It is hoped that this outcome will be accomplished through revision of the curriculum and expansion of the training to clinical sites in Newark, NJ including Integrity House, Broadway House, the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris, Inc., and Saint James Health. The new grant also extends the training to Monmouth University’s nursing and physician assistant students, a pilot program involving the dissemination of the curriculum to other institutions.

More than 400 students successfully completed the DATA 2000 (DEA-X) Waiver training program by the end of the first three-year grant, making them eligible to obtain a DEA-X to prescribe MAT. With increased numbers of health professionals who can prescribe MAT, treatment recovery outcomes for individuals with opioid use disorders will improve.

The first grant was capped by the virtual conference “Recovery from Opioid Use Disorders: State-of-the-Art Science to Advance Clinical Care,” held July 30 of this year. The event was organized by the project leaders: College of Nursing Associate Dean Neville; School of Health and Medical Sciences Department Chair and Assistant Professor Christopher Hanifin, M.S., PA-C; and Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine Associate Dean Terlecky.

“This is a critical need for all clinicians in the 21st century,” said Bonita Stanton, M.D., the founding dean of the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. “The health care workers of the future need to have the tools to address addiction. Through our innovative and highly inter-professional training at the beginning of the careers of our medical, nursing and physician assistant students, we are well-equipping the students to achieve the goal of substantial reduction among their communities in opioid addiction.”

Genuine Health Group Nearly Triples Amount Of Medicare Savings To $11.6 Million

Genuine Health Group Logo

We anticipate a dramatic growth surge as we expand our model into new markets here in Florida and elsewhere.

Genuine Health Group, a Miami-based healthcare company focused on transitioning physicians to value-based care models, announced its accountable care organization, Genuine Health ACO, saved the Medicare system $11.6 million in 2020. The savings have been confirmed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and underscore the company’s continued success in improving health outcomes while reducing unnecessary medical expenditures. The savings also demonstrate Genuine Health’s rapid growth as measured by the number of physicians affiliated with the company and the total number of Medicare beneficiaries for whom Genuine Health manages care delivery.

Genuine Health ACO’s $11.6 million in savings represents the difference between how much Medicare anticipated spending on healthcare for the Medicare beneficiaries aligned with its ACO and how much the company actually spent. The anticipated amount is adjusted for patients’ age and health circumstances.

At its most basic level, the $11.6 million in savings means Medicare beneficiaries aligned with Genuine Health ACO required less hospital care than similar populations enrolled in traditional Medicare. And fewer hospitalizations are the result of a company-wide, disciplined approach to disease prevention, care access, and medication adherence: the foundation of Genuine Health Group’s approach to value-based care.

“We know what it takes to keep patients healthy and out of the hospital,” said Genuine Health Group’s CEO, Joe Caruncho. “The $11.6 million in savings we achieved is proof-positive that our model works. It’s also a testament to the high-performing physicians that have joined Genuine Health to bring about positive change in the way we care for people on Medicare.”

Genuine Health Group’s latest enterprise, Genuine Health Direct, will continue to advance care delivery aimed squarely at better health outcomes, reducing unnecessary healthcare expenses, and keeping patients healthy. In fact, as a Direct Contracting Entity, or DCE, Genuine Health Direct, which the company launched earlier this year, operates under a “mandate” from CMS to drive down healthcare expenditures, improve health outcomes, and increase health options for Medicare beneficiaries. However, unlike its ACO, Genuine Health Direct keeps 100% of the savings it earns for the Medicare system. In addition, as a DCE, Genuine Health Direct can pay monthly capitation payments to its participating physicians for providing care to their patients with traditional fee-for-service Medicare. Plus, they can earn bonuses for the savings they deliver to Medicare.

“We’re at a defining moment in our evolution,” said chief medical officer and Genuine Health Group co-founder, Dr. Orlando Fernandez-Lopez. “We have proven the power of technology-enabled healthcare delivery as a tool to reduce cost and improve health. Now, we anticipate a dramatic growth surge as we expand our model into new markets here in Florida and elsewhere.”

In addition to nearly tripling its savings over the previous year from $4 million to $11.6 million, Genuine Health ACO achieved a top quality score of 96.87%. The high quality score is based on physicians’ performance as well as Genuine Health’s support programs such as home health visits for patients leaving the hospital, and robust care for patients with chronic conditions, including those with diabetes, congestive heart failure, and COPD.

This year, Genuine Health Group received additional recognitions, including an “Excellence in Healthcare” award for CEO Joe Caruncho from South Florida Business & Wealth and a place on South Florida Business Journal’s “Fast 50” list, which recognizes the fastest-growing companies in South Florida. Genuine Health Group will be featured as one of the “Hispanic-Owned Businesses” highlighted by the South Florida Business Journal.

FDA Grants Clearance for Longeviti’s Off-The-Shelf ClearFit® Cover, Accelerating Capability of Ultrasound Imaging after Complex Brain Surgery

News Image

This breakthrough technology is a game changer for surgeons like myself. The combination of the reconstructive application and post-operative imaging through ultrasound, in a product we can immediately access, is a significant milestone in our ability to perform complex brain surgery.

Longeviti Neuro Solutions, developer of the first low-profile intracranial devices that meets the functional and reconstructive needs of brain surgery patients, recently announced that it was granted a 510(k) clearance by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for ClearFit® OTS (off-the-shelf). With the new 510(k) clearance, Longeviti is the first solutions provider to bring an optically clear, polymethyl methacrylate, off-the-shelf cranial product to the market— enabling surgeons to address urgent, immediate functional and reconstructive clinical needs with the latest technological advancements in neurosurgery.

The ClearFit® OTS product line provides implantable prosthetics to correct and restore cranium bone voids, while also enabling the use of ultrasound for post-operative imaging. The ClearFit® OTS is an extension of the company’s original ClearFit®.

“There is a real need for a product like the ClearFit® OTS, which allows us to utilize this innovative solution when performing cranial surgery under emergency circumstances,” said Justin Singer, MD, Neurosurgeon at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “This breakthrough technology is a game changer for surgeons like myself, and will greatly benefit our patients and their ongoing care. The combination of the reconstructive application and post-operative imaging through ultrasound, in a product we can immediately access, is a significant milestone in our ability to perform complex brain surgery.”

The ClearFit® OTS products are made of polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA), a sonolucent, biocompatible material with over 40 years of proven clinical performance. The product line is the first-of-its-kind and allows neurosurgeons to use ultrasound imaging post-operatively, reducing radiation exposure.

Research has shown that current post-neurosurgical imaging modalities carry risks due to radiation exposure, and that approximately 29,000 future cancers could be related to CT scan use in the U.S. per year (1).

“The patient is, and always will be, our focus as we continue to develop new neurological solutions,” said Jesse Christopher, CEO of Longeviti. “We’re thrilled to bring the ClearFit® OTS to market, as it grants a new pool of patients access to life-enhancing technology. We’re looking forward to working with surgeons to bring this innovative solution to more patients around the globe.”

About Longeviti

Longeviti is advancing neurosurgery through the development of low-profile intracranial implants that address the functional and reconstructive needs of patients with neurological conditions. Since 2018, the company has brought several FDA-cleared implants to market. Longeviti’s focus is to develop innovative solutions for complex brain surgery that return patients to anatomical normalcy.
