The ability to predict ahead of time which drugs will be effective for a unique patient across many different clinical scenarios and to identify in real-time which medications may cause patients serious issues, will save lives and improve the quality of our care while also being more cost effective

Ochsner Health, headquartered in New Orleans, is improving the future of healthcare by piloting a pharmacogenomics project that will help predict which drugs will work best for individual patients before they even need them by adding the ActX Genomic Decision Support to its Electronic Health Record, Epic. The goal is to transform patient care and bring precision medicine into the workflow of Ochsner’s physicians.
The key advantages of the ActX genomics platform include real time drug genome interaction checking within normal electronic health record order workflow, a built-in genomic profile in each chart, and the ability to assess actionable hereditary risks.
Ochsner will integrate ActX Genomic Decision Support within its electronic health record, Epic. This integration brings genomics to cancer care by leveraging the ActX service to enable real-time checking of each prescription order against the patient’s genetic profile. Prescribing physicians will be alerted if a drug is likely to be ineffective, cause an adverse reaction, or need a dosing change based on the patient’s genetics, all within their normal prescribing workflow. A built-in Genomic Profile for each patient will be available within the patient chart.
“The ability to predict ahead of time which drugs will be effective for a unique patient across many different clinical scenarios and to identify in real-time which medications may cause patients serious issues, will save lives and improve the quality of our care while also being more cost effective,” said Marc Matrana, MD, MS, FACP, Director, Ochsner Precision Cancer Therapies Program.
“We are excited to partner with Ochsner Health to bring precision medicine and genomic decision support into routine care,” said Dr. Andrew Ury, CEO of ActX. “The ActX Platform will help make actionable genomics practical for Ochsner’s physicians and their patients.”
Ochsner’s implementation of ActX within Epic marks a big step toward making personalized medicine the norm for its patients. To learn more about ActX, visit http://www.actx.com.
