Winnie-the-Pooh Makes Kickstarter Projects More Accessible

The Winnie-the-Pooh Project

“We are producing both a full-length video and audiobook with audio description of the pictures for children who are blind or low vision and captions and sign language for children who are deaf or have hearing challenges.”Richard Rieman, Founder and CEO, Imagination Videobooks

“The Winnie-the-Pooh Project” advocated for Kickstarter’s new ALT TEXT feature, and it will be the first Kickstarter project ever to use it. Crowdfunding project creators can now have full image descriptions for blind and low vision visitors. Kickstarter has always had the option to add captions, but not alt text.

THE DIFFERENCE

This is how having alt text helps blind readers using screen readers to read a page out loud

Caption: Making Winnie-the-Pooh Accessible to blind and deaf children

Alt Text: Images of Pooh as he floats under a blue balloon next to bees, Piglet walks with a big heart in his hands, and Pooh steadies Piglet as he reaches for a prickly pear in a pear tree. The words are “Making Winnie-the-Pooh Accessible to Blind and Deaf Children.”

The Pooh Project is raising money to make the original 1926 Winnie-the-Pooh book FULLY ACCESSIBLE to blind and deaf children. Project Creator Richard Rieman and his Kickstarter Consultant, Lisa Ferland, reached out to Kickstarter’s Director of Publishing, who replied that the alt text feature has been in development and the Winnie-the-Pooh Project will be the first campaign to include it.

Richard says, “We are producing both a full-length video and audiobook with audio description of the pictures for children who are blind or low vision and captions and sign language for children who are deaf or have hearing challenges.”

“Pooh is the perfect project for us because the characters all have their differences and are still very lovable. It is very special that half of our cast members are voice actors who are themselves blind or low vision,” says Richard, who is the Founder and CEO of Imagination Videobooks, which has made over 100 children’s picture books accessible to all children.

About the Winnie-the-Pooh Project

“The Winnie-the-Pooh Project” is one of Kickstarter’s “Projects We Love.” All Pooh lovers now have the chance to help create a full-length Winnie-the-Pooh video and audiobook that is described, captioned, and signed with American Sign Language interpretation on-screen.

Turner Joint Venture in Association with HOK Selected for Design and Construction of New York Public Health Laboratory

United States’ Largest State Public Health Laboratory Is Critical in the Fight Against COVID.

The joint venture of Gilbane Building Company and Turner Construction Company in association with design firm HOK has been awarded an initial contract to advance the creation of a new $750 million state-of-the-art public health laboratory on the Harriman State Office Campus Complex in Albany. New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s announcement of the team’s selection is an important step forward for the new laboratory, which will serve New York State’s public health needs.

“Gilbane is honored to team with Turner and HOK to advance New York’s public health preparedness,” said John LaRow, Senior Vice President, Gilbane Building Company. “We look forward to working with our team of building and design experts and partnering with the Hochul administration to deliver the state-of-the-art public health facility that New York deserves.”

“It is an honor to partner with the State of New York as well as Gilbane, HOK, and the trade partners on this world-class facility that will help protect and improve the health of the people of New York,” said Carl Stewart III, Vice President and General Manager, Turner Construction. “It is so incredibly rewarding to collaborate on a project enhancing New York’s capabilities to efficiently and effectively prepare for and respond to public health matters.”

“HOK is excited to team with Gilbane | Turner and the New York State Department of Health, Wadsworth Center on this critical project for all New Yorkers,” said David Schwartz, AIA, HOK’s leader of Science + Technology in New York. “The Wadsworth Laboratory has been at the forefront of public health since its inception. This is a significant opportunity to redefine the future of public health for both New York and the country.”

Gilbane | Turner and HOK have been selected for the design and construction of a new Wadsworth Laboratory that will consolidate operations currently spread out across several Capital Region facilities. The contract will be made up of several phases. This initial investment will explore options for a new basis of design, ranging from partial to full consolidation of Wadsworth facilities. A primary goal is to enhance the State’s readiness to effectively respond to potential future public health crises.

The Wadsworth Laboratory, which played a central role in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, focuses on a wide range of critical public health concerns, including responding to public health threats, studying emerging infections, analyzing environmental exposures, and licensing clinical and environmental laboratories, among many other critical responsibilities. Since its origin developing communicable diseases treatments in 1901 and the development of the Division of Laboratories and Research in 1914, the Wadsworth Center has grown to become the largest and most diverse state public health laboratory in the United States.

The Governor’s press release on the announcement can be found here.

Neora Named Best Place to Work by Direct Selling News for Second Consecutive Year

News Image

Over the last couple of years, we’ve worked hard to adjust how we approach our business and invest in our employees’ quality of life, and it’s clear that our success is a direct result of our employee satisfaction.

Neora, a direct-to-consumer leader in science-based, age-fighting skincare, hair care and wellness products, has been recognized by Direct Selling News (DSN) as a “Best Place to Work in Direct Selling” for 2022. This is the second consecutive year that Dallas-based Neora has earned this honor.

DSN’s Best Places to Work in Direct Selling contest recognizes companies that bring out the best in their employees by providing exceptional and nurturing work environments. Employee satisfaction and engagement is factored greatly into the contest’s research. Neora is one of only seven companies recognized by DSN for this honor in 2022.

“Thank you to everyone at Direct Selling News for recognizing Neora as a rewarding place to work for our amazing staff,” said Deborah Heisz, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Neora. “Over the last couple of years, we’ve worked hard to adjust how we approach our business and invest in our employees’ quality of life, and it’s clear that our success is a direct result of our employee satisfaction. We want everyone to thrive in their roles and are always taking steps to provide our staff with the best possible environment in which they can flourish. We hope that this recognition will help other companies to see what works for us and apply similar tactics to help improve their employee engagement.”

Neora has recently embraced the hybrid work model for its employees, allowing them to work from home for up to three days per week. The company also offers tuition reimbursement for its employees and encourages them to volunteer their time for charitable events such as canned food drives and the “Toys for Tots” Christmas campaign. In addition, Neora has partnered with LA Fitness, offering employees a discounted monthly membership. This perk includes any location in the U.S. and Canada as well as being able to bring 2 guests.

Neora was founded in 2011 and has since generated over $2B in cumulative sales, ranked #12 on Inc. 500’s America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies List and #1 for consumer products category, earned a #1 spot on Beauty Inc.’s Top Sales Gains List, and is a Direct Selling Association Top 20 member (DSA).

DOCS Health Hosting Training Course for Stryker Orthopaedics

News Image

“We are looking forward to hosting USC residents and attendings to help educate and train them on the latest in surgical technology and techniques,” says DOCS Health representative.

The cadaver lab training for local orthopedic residents and attendings will be taking place on May 21, 2022, at DOCS Surgical Hospital, located at 6000 San Vicente Blvd in Los Angeles, California. DOCS Health offers continuing education and training for surgeons on innovative technology and techniques. The state-of-the-art facility is the premier destination for hands-on, clinical practice in orthopedic surgery. For this particular cadaver lab at DOCS Health, Mako™ robotic-assisted technology by Stryker and the Hana table will be the main focus for direct anterior total hip replacement training. Unlike traditional posterior hip replacement surgery that requires a large incision on the backside (or posterior) of the hip, the anterior approach for total hip replacement uses an incision on the front of the hip, eliminating the need to cut through major muscle groups surrounding the joint.

There have been major improvements in hip replacement and reconstruction with the introduction of Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery associated with the direct anterior approach (DAA). This surgical approach for total hip arthroplasty (THA) is growing in popularity, and its effectiveness has been demonstrated to improve patients’ outcomes, especially regarding more accurate implant placement, less post operative pain, faster recovery and lower prosthesis dislocation risk. The robotic-arm assisted surgery also benefits the orthopedic surgeons, as it allows them to create a patient-specific THA pre-operative planning and perform a much more accurate surgical procedure. The Hana® Orthopedic Surgery Table is a table that enables surgeons to perform a variety of fracture and orthopedic procedures, including the anterior approach for total hip replacements. With its capability to position the leg, the Hana table enables the surgeon to replace the hip through a short single incision without detachment of muscle from the pelvis or femur. The table allows hyperextension, abduction, adduction and external rotation of the legs for femoral component placement and is a resource for many orthopedic surgical procedures.

“We are looking forward to hosting USC residents and attendings to help educate and train them on the latest in surgical technology and techniques,” says DOCS Health representative.

By using cutting-edge technology in genomic sequencing, along with machine learning, Parallel has created a Skin Microbiome Discovery Kit for people to uncover their skin health through the skin microbiome, which correlates with states of inflammation, discoloration, dryness, and aging. From there, Parallel has developed Targeted Formulations, specifically skin serums, to balance and improve skin health and aging based on diagnostic results. The company is currently accepting people on its waitlist; Parallel products are set to launch later this year.

Fast Company honors companies that aim to change the world with health technology, innovative corporate initiatives, brave new designs for cities and buildings, and other creative works that support the growth of positive social innovation, tackling social inequality, climate change, and public health crises.

A panel of eminent Fast Company editors and reporters selected companies from a pool of more than 3,000 entries across transportation, education, food, politics, technology, health, social justice, and more. This cohort of companies showcase some of the world’s most inventive entrepreneurs and companies tackling global challenges.

“The future is precision health — and we believe what we’re building in the skin microbiome space is vital to this vision. We’re honored to be included in this year’s list of World Changing Ideas,” says Parallel Health’s CEO Natalise Kalea Robinson.

“We are consistently inspired by the novelty and creativity that people are applying to solve some of our society’s most pressing problems, from shelter to the climate crisis. Fast Company relishes its role in amplifying important, innovative work to address big challenges,” says David Lidsky, interim editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “Our journalists have identified some of the most ingenious initiatives to launch since the start of 2021, which we hope will both have a meaningful impact and lead others to join in being part of the solution.”

Dr. Neil Gordon Featured at The 7th International Chosun Symposium on Facial Rejuvenation at KCCS

Dr. Neil Gordon Spoke About Deep-Plane Rhytidectomy At the 7th International Chosun Symposium on Facial Rejuvenation In Korea

Dr. Neil Gordon Spoke About Deep-Plane Rhytidectomy At the 7th International Chosun Symposium on Facial Rejuvenation In Korea

Last year, The 7th International Chosun Symposium on Facial Rejuvenation took place at The Korean College of Cosmetic Surgery and Medicine. Dr. Gordon was invited to this event as an honored guest and special lecturer.

Dr. Gordon, a Facial Rejuvenation and Rhinoplasty expert, was one of the only featured speakers presenting his experience with “Deep-Plane Rhytidectomy from Novice to Expert ”. His lecture went over the foundations of facial aging and was based on Dr. Gordon’s published studies which defined the etiology of facial aging.

After explaining the basics, Dr. Gordon displayed his expert knowledge of deep-plane rhytidectomy, also known as a deep-plane facelift. Facelifts are one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries worldwide. This procedure helps provide patients with a more youthful appearance and natural look.

There are many different surgical techniques used to perform the Rhytidectomy. However, Dr. Gordon has pioneered and perfected this specific cosmetic technique. In addition, he has backed up the importance of this procedure through academic research and exploration. His seminar went over Deep-Plane Rhytidectomy in detail and explained the technique from novice to expert level.

The nuances and details of the Deep-Plane Rhytidectomy were expounded upon, this way the plastic surgeons in attendance could better understand how to perform this advanced procedure in their practices.

In the future, Dr. Gordon plans on attending future international conferences to share his surgical techniques and expertise. He was particularly proud about his lecture at this event though, as The 7th International Chosun Symposium brings together the best surgeons and experts in the field of cosmetic surgery at one of the largest conferences in the world.

With over 25,000 attendees, from mainly Asia, Dr. Gordon was able to share his knowledge with a wide range of health experts and professionals from all over the globe, and he wants to continue to bring the international cosmetic community together through his lectures. Today at its Annual Technology & Business Conference, NCPDP announced its 2022 Champion Award recipients, Lori Moore, PharmD, CAPT United States Public Health Service (USPHS), and Paloma L. Hawry, CDC Contractor, Deloitte Consulting | Federal Healthcare. NCPDP’s Champion Award recognizes outstanding accomplishments or work to improve patient care by actively supporting NCPDP members and its initiatives.

NCPDP President & CEO Lee Ann Stember stated, “This year, we are honored to present the Champion Award to two individuals. Captain Lori Moore and Paloma Hawry have provided outstanding support to NCPDP’s MC Emergency Preparedness Task Group, specifically for all COVID-19 related activities last year. They were instrumental in bringing industry concerns to key decision makers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Their engagement and support helped enable NCPDP to quickly develop industry guidance for onsite testing, pharmacy specimen collection, vaccine inventory management and administration within the retail sector.”

Stember continued, “Their unwavering support continued throughout the year and toward the end of 2021 with changes regarding over-the-counter test kits and oral antivirals. Their level of collaboration was exceptional. Their ability to have open dialog to discuss potential options, while seeking input from Task Group co-chairs, ensured they were helping inform critical decision makers and government officials of the various options or solutions the industry could implement.”

NCPDP’s Annual Conference continues today with Keynote Speaker Lygeia Ricciardi, Digital Health and Patient Engagement Pioneer; Featured Speaker Doug Long, presenting the IQVIA™ Market Trends Report; and more educational programming and networking opportunities.
