Ride with us!

“We’re proud to have provided 31 scholarships to date to an amazing group of young students, and bring them into the Lime Connect community as they navigate university.” – Mike MacKay, Lime Connect global board chair

Lime Connect will host its fifth annual Ride to Rebrand Disability on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at The Bike Lane in Reston, Virginia. Designed as a great ride (10-, 30-, 62- and 100-mile routes) for a great cause, cyclists will enjoy the gorgeous northern Virginia foliage along the W&OD Trail and suburban streets with rest stops and rider support along the way.

Post-ride festivities include lunch from Mission BBQ (Herndon), music, massages, and beer specially brewed by Bike Lane Brewery – in addition to fun swag and giveaways. “The Lime Connect Ride is probably the best I’ve ever done. It’s a great ride through the Loudoun County countryside, and I’m riding again this year!” stated Dave Duvall, Lime Connect Ride participant.

Those who are not able to join in person have the option of riding virtually – anywhere in the world – between September 8th and October 8th. An “Anything Goes” option allows individuals to rack up miles by walking, running, using a wheelchair, Peleton, or any form of mobility.

Proceeds benefit Lime Connect’s work to rebrand disability through achievement – specifically the Lime Connect Pathways Scholarship for high school seniors who have disabilities and are entering university. Mike MacKay, Lime’s global board chair, says, “we’re proud to have provided 31 scholarships to date to an amazing group of young students, and bring them into the Lime Connect community as they navigate university. Our goal for 2022 is to fund an additional 15 scholarships, so join the challenge – set up a team, ride with friends and family, and rebrand disability with us!”

Prizes are awarded for the top fund raiser, and top fundraising team; and giveaways include a Yeti 12 soft cooler, Loctote bike locks, gift certificates to Mission BBQ Herndon and The Bike Lane, and more. Individuals who raise $500+ will receive a coveted “500 Club” cycling jersey. (Fundraising is not required to ride.)

The Lime Connect Ride to Rebrand Disability is presented by Bloomberg, and sponsors include Google, NEA (New Enterprise Associates), The Meridian Group/The Boro, The Bike Lane, Unilever, EX2 Adventures, Loctote, Mission BBQ (Herndon), Salesforce, Select Physical Therapy, and Synergy Fitness Training.

Pittsburgh Nonprofit Provides Critical Resources for Families in Need

News Image

“Formula is food and our community needs to have a resource that helps support this niched need. We are excited to be able to launch the regions first formula bank. We plan to launch, learn, grow, and serve the babies in the burgh,” said Executive Director/Founder, Megs Yunn.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Pittsburgh nonprofit, Beverly’s Birthdays has been supporting families with a necessary, life sustaining item-infant formula. The division, Beverly’s Babies, which celebrates the “birth”day supports a network of agency partners and their families throughout the Greater Pittsburgh region with resources to support them during the pregnancy and first year. These services include free community baby showers, newborn diaper care packages, a critical baby care item referral program, “A Year of Cheer” and most recently, the launch of the regions first infant formula bank.

“Beverly’s Babies programming supports over 3,000 babies annually. We are thrilled to be able to add another needed service offering for our families” says Beverly’s Babies Director, Darla Sherlock.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, by six months of age, 75% of all babies in the United States have consumed some type of baby formula. Breastfeeding is the preferred source of nutrition for infants, but there are many reasons why a parent may choose or not be able to breastfeed. Additionally, there are families that rely on formula as a supplement in supporting breastfeeding. Formula is an expensive item to begin with, and when you add supply chain challenges, product recalls, increased cost of goods, and food desserts, families are struggling, stressed, and in need of resources.

“I had no idea how I was going to feed my baby. Thank you so much for helping me.” – Supported Mom

Beverly’s Birthdays launched A Formula for Cheer: The Greater Pittsburgh Infant Formula Bank. This new service is in partnership with Hello Baby, Allegheny County DHS, and Allegheny County Family Centers.

The formula banks, which are managed by Beverly’s Babies, are in McKeesport Family Center, Homewood Family Center & Early Learning Hub, Hilltop Family Center, and Highlands Family Center. Additionally, Beverly’s Birthdays maintains the service out of their location in North Huntingdon.

Families are able to access baby formula if there is an emergency or crisis need. They can receive up to 12 standard cans (26.1 oz) per year and no more than 3 cans at any time.

“Three of my four children struggled with dietary challenges as babies, and I had to utilize formula to support their needs. One of my children required a specialty formula that insurance provided. I know how expensive formula is and even prior to the pandemic, families struggled to access it and afford it. Formula is food and our community needs to have a resource that helps support this niched need. We are excited to be able to launch the regions first formula bank. We plan to launch, learn, grow, and serve the babies in the burgh,” said Executive Director/Founder, Megs Yunn.

The Greater Pittsburgh Infant Formula Bank will focus on four core principles: Formula, Education, Engagement, and Distribution or F.E.E.D. The goal is to ensure that families have access to the formula they need, receive educational information on best practices for formula feeding as well as resources about breastfeeding, engage the community and public on how to donate and support the bank, and distribute the items not only at the centers, but the organization plans to host pop-up distribution events with their mobile Baby Boutique, a baby store on wheels.

The organization has worked with stakeholders, foundations, and corporate partners to help with the launch of this initiative.

To sustain The Greater Pittsburgh Formula Bank, the organization welcomes monetary and new, unexpired formula donations. If you have product to donate, you can contact the organization directly at 724-590-5106.

Drill-Free Dentistry Now at Elica Health Centers with Addition of Solea All-Tissue Dental Laser

Solea All-Tissue Dental Laser by Convergent Dental

Solea All-Tissue Dental Laser

“Not only does Solea provide a better experience for our patients, but it allows our dentists to deliver better clinical outcomes and perform more treatments per patient visit. This means we can provide superior care and do it all in fewer appointments.”

Elica Health Centers (EHC) now offers dental patients reliably anesthesia-free, needle-free fillings and blood-free, suture-free soft tissue surgeries using the Solea® All-Tissue Dental Laser (Convergent Dental, Needham, MA). By integrating Solea into their dental practices, EHC is fulfilling their mission to provide high quality, affordable health care to underserved populations confronted with barriers to accessing care throughout the Sacramento area.

Solea is an advanced dental laser that replaces the needle and drill for a host of dental treatments. In fact, most patients don’t need anesthesia for common procedures like fillings,” said Nina Tecson, DDS, Dental Director of EHC. “Not only does Solea provide a better experience for our patients, but it allows our dentists to deliver better clinical outcomes and perform more treatments per patient visit. This means we can provide superior care and do it all in fewer appointments. Solea has also allowed us to expand our scope of dental services, allowing our dentists to treat more patients in our offices, instead of referring to specialists.”

Tatyana Bak, CEO of EHC, noted that many EHC patients face transportation and scheduling challenges that can create disparities in access to care. Because Solea is reliably anesthesia-free, dentists do not have to inject anesthesia and wait for it to take effect, which saves time. Additionally, dentists can perform multi-quadrant dentistry, which means they can perform procedures in all areas of the mouth and complete more treatments in a single visit. Patients are able to take less time away from work and avoid traveling for follow-up appointments. And a bonus for patients: they can leave the practice and go back to work immediately without that uncomfortable, numb sensation.

EHC has integrated Solea in five locations to date. Maria Nunez-Ouji, DDS, a general dentist focused on treating children based in the EHC Cadillac Drive office, is particularly impressed with how Solea benefits her pediatric patients. “Many children come in nervous before they’ve even had their first dental visit because of what they’ve seen on TV or heard from adults. Solea enables us to treat multiple cavities on the same day, with no needles, no sound of the drill, and no numbness. Because the patient does not leave numb, they can return to school, camp, or even grab food immediately afterwards. These children will never need to feel anxious about the dentist again, and neither will their parents!”

ViQi, Inc. announces Pascal Bamford, Ph.D. and Timothy Spicer, Ph.D. have joined the board of directors and scientific advisory board, respectively

“We are thrilled to get the advice and guidance from both Tim and Pascal. Their depth of understanding of these markets, the unresolved problems, the future vision and business strategy will be crucial in maximizing ViQi’s impact globally.” said Kathy Yeung, ViQi CEO

ViQi, Inc, a California cloud-based image analysis company specializing in using artificial intelligence for the scientific discovery process, is excited to announce the appointment of Pascal Bamford, Ph.D. to the board of directors and Timothy Spicer, Ph.D. as the inaugural member of the scientific advisory board.

Pascal Bamford, Ph.D., is senior vice president of research and development and laboratory operations at Akoya Biosciences and brings his expertise in image analysis, software development and clinical systems implementation. Dr. Bamford has a PhD in cell image analysis from the University of Queensland, Australia and has spent his career applying advanced technologies to cancer diagnostics at companies such as Roche, Genomic Health and Exact Sciences. Pascal’s insights into the wealth of opportunities for the ViQi platform and applications are invaluable to the company’s future direction.

Timothy Spicer, Ph.D. is a Research Professor and senior scientific director at UF Scripps Biomedical Research and of the current President of the board of directors at Society of Laboratory Automation & Screening (SLAS). Dr. Spicer brings with him extensive knowledge of High Throughput Screening systems and technology development, over 30 years of drug discovery experience, 100+ publications and multiple patents. Tim’s understanding of the automation and how High Content Analysis fits into the HTS process and its current needs and limitations, will help to navigate what AI solutions ViQi will focus on.

“We are thrilled to get the advice and guidance from both Tim and Pascal. Their depth of understanding of these markets, the unresolved problems, the future vision and business strategy will be crucial in maximizing ViQi’s impact globally,” said Kathy Yeung, ViQi CEO.

Dr. Bamford commented, “The application of machine learning for new scientific discoveries and robust application deployment is without question. A key challenge has been the ability to seamlessly and efficiently manage the discovery to implementation cycle in a scalable, integrated and traceable fashion. The ViQi team have built an artificial intelligence platform and toolset that greatly accelerates this cycle and has enormous potential to drive innovation across many fields and industries. I am honored and excited to contribute to ViQi’s impactful mission.”

Dr. Spicer also added, “I have personally experienced the power of High Throughput Screening and automation which has afforded us many critical discoveries, providing leads that ultimately have become live changing drugs. It’s also always nice to play in the intersection of science and technology especially when something as effectual as AI comes around. It’s true that traditional HTS generates lots of valuable data which we deal with in many beneficial ways, but we are still limited by what we perceive is the utility of the data. Today, we see so many more imaging applications in the HTS environment that output such eloquent data that, frankly, we need better analysis tools to help us interpret that data.”
